CHAPTER II HEBREW AND JEWISH HOPES The Hebrew people were particularly sensitive to the presence of hostile forces in their world. The pressure of life's ills was felt by them even more keenly than by many of their gentile neighbors. They also believed that a final triumph for humanity would be secured only through the special intervention of Deity. In fact, rarely or never did any neighboring peoples hold so tenaciously as did the Jews to the hope of a glorious divine deliverance. Throughout a long period of years they suffered repeated misfortunes, but each new calamity seemed only to strengthen their confidence in the coming of a better day when their present unhappy condition would be completely reversed. I By the beginning of the Christian era Jewish hopes had passed through a long period of growth. The beginnings of this process are veiled in obscurity, but very possibly there had 48 been a time when the ancestors of the Jews, like most other peoples in that ancient world, had depicted their fears and hopes in the form of myths reflecting a dread of nature's elemental forces and a hope of victory to be secured by the help of Deity. In historical times the Hebrews were unique in their efforts to bring all supernatural activities under the control of their own national god, Jehovah. Consequently at an early date he assumed the allembracing r61e of both destroyer and deliverer. Jehovah is frequently associated with the terrors of thunder, lightning, and storm. When angry, he speaks in the roaring tempest or in the crashing thunder, and the flaming lightning is the breath of his nostrils. He is also the god of earthquake and volcanic fire. He causes the earth to tremble and shakes the mountains to their very foundations. At times his...

Explore the life that will be ours, with Christ Jesus in our midst: ..". Then, as if a power seized the Earth itself, a deep vibration rose in earnest. The most profound facet was that the vibration became musical. The great beauty of the hymn, lifting praise to Jesus, was that it was expressed through the union of the voices of humanity and the musical vibrations of the Judean wilderness. Then a multitude of angels swept in, joining in with their voices, powerful and yet lofty, as if flowing in on the Mediterranean breeze."All fairest beauty, heavenly and Earthlywondrously, Jesus, is found in Thee;none can be nearer, fairer or dearer, than Thou, my Savior, art to me. New sounds added resounding and lively significance to the communal worship, animals braying, honking, twittering, and warbling. The animals did not detract the focus from worship, but unrestrainedly enhanced it."

Book excerpt: Is there hope for this world? Do the promises of the gospel hold out a bright future for the families and nations of the earth? In this enlightening work, Keith A. Mathison sets forth a wealth of biblical, historical, and theological evidence for an optimistic eschatology. Unlike end-time forecasts that see modest growth in the church before Christ's return, postmillennialism expects the Spirit-blessed gospel to have overwhelming success in bringing the world to Christ. Mathison explains why, and he calls us to renewed faith and expectation as we serve the reigning King of Kings.

Book excerpt: “A good education will land you a good job,” “Be an entrepreneur/Start something in a garage or dorm room” and even “Jesus saves” are narratives that collapsed for the millennial generation (born 1982-2002). These narratives, amongst many similar social and religious ones, have lost their meaning and power as millennials question all authorities and struggle to flourish in a world come of age. With their needs for community and success, a strong spirituality, and believing that their gifts should be recognized and can make a difference, millennials increasingly find meaning and purpose outside the church. As they face economic uncertainty, reduced career prospects, unceasing change, as well as civic, global, and ecological uncertainties, however, a large number of millennials are overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety and depression. Caught between hope and fear, millennials leave the church with their values of personal transformation, purpose, community, spirituality, social transformation and ecological awareness. Ironically the church often holds the same values. The Millenial Narrative is written for pastoral leaders who want to welcome millennials, both inside and outside their congregation. The book draws on the wisdom of the prophetic Book of Joel as a narrative worth living into. Drawing on Joel’s three chapters, The Millenial Narrative empowers pastoral leaders to: • Facilitate the work of mourning Millennials are facing; • Envision a spiritual community that can welcome millennials; • Introduce a compassionate God that restores and indwells as the Spirit; • Reflect on God’s judgment through the lens of accountability; and, • Support and encourage millennials to be a blessing to others. In addition, pastoral leaders will receive a sermon outline and material for adult education.

That is the Blessed Hope which has since the earliest days of the Church energized Biblical Christians looking for the full revelation of God's redemption. The author sketches the history of interpretations of Christ's second coming and then carefully and lucidly examines the Biblical passages on which this doctrine is based. His conclusion is that the Blessed Hope is the second coming of Jesus Christ, not a pretribulation rapture that believers in a secret coming of Jesus. Yet he concludes that there should be liberty and charity within the Christian community for all who hold to the expectation of "the blessed hope and appearing in glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eschatology is a crucial theological issue in our day. The rapture question has particular importance in premillennial eschatology. This volume confronts that question: Does the rapture of the church precede or follow the Great Tribulation? In this book Dr. John F. Walvoord examines the post-tribulationist viewpoint and calls into question its exegetical grounds and hermeneutical validity. The author examines four schools of thought within posttribulationism and challenges point by point the arguments of their leading exponents. This scholarly apologia of the events relating to the second coming of Christ reaffirms the author's conviction that pretribulationism provides the best interpretation of the biblical evidence and demonstrates the most reliable understanding of the Christian's assurance of the 'blessed hope.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gradual change has been a hallmark of the Chinese reform experience, and China's success in its sequential approach makes it unique among the former command economies. Since 1979, with the inception of the continuing era of reform, the Chinese economy has flourished. Growth has averaged nine percent a year, and China is now a trillion dollar economy. China has become a major trading power and the predominant target among developing countries for foreign direct investment. Despite all this, China remains poor and the reform process unfinished. This book takes its defining theme from Deng Xiaopeng's famous metaphor for gradual reform: “feeling the stones to cross the river.” How far has China progressed in fording the river? The experts who contributed to this volume tackle many aspects of that question, assessing Chinese progress in policy reform, priorities for further reform, and the research still needed to inform policymakers’ decisions.
