Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eye has fascinated scientists from the earliest days of biological in vestigation. The diversity of its parts and the precision of their interaction make it a favorite model system for a variety of developmental studies. The eye is a particularly valuable experimental system not only because its tissues provide examples of fundamental processes, but also because it is a prominent and easily accessible structure at very early embryonic ages. In order to provide an open forum for investigators working on all aspects of ocular development, a series of symposia on ocular and visual devel opment was initiated in 1973. A major objective of the symposia has been to foster communication between the basic research worker and the clinical community. It is our feeling that much can be learned on both sides from this interaction. The idea for an informal meeting allowing maximum ex change of ideas originated with Dr. Leon Candeub, who supplied the nec essary driving force that made the series a reality. Each symposium has concentrated on a different aspect of ocular development. Speakers have been selected to approach related topics from different perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art in genetic eye research in Asia and the Pacific. Though there has been an explosion of information on genetic eye research in western countries, more than sixty percent of the human genes involved in eye diseases in the Asian and Pacific population remain unknown. However, new efforts and a new awareness have sparked important discussions on the subject, and new plans are being implemented to discover the genes responsible for many eye diseases in the population. The book reviews the latest findings; its content ranges from genetic aspects of human migration to DNA sequence analysis, genome-wide association analysis, and disease phenotypes. The efforts of the Asian Eye Genetic Consortium (AEGC) are also discussed. The book’s editors have been instrumental in developing strategies for discovering the new Asian genes involved in many eye diseases. All chapters were written by leading researchers working on Asian eye genetics from the fields of Human Genetics, Ophthalmology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Sensory Sciences, and Clinical Research. Advances in Vision Research, Volume I will prove to be a major resource for all researchers, clinicians, clinical researchers, and allied eye health professionals with an interest in eye diseases among the Asian population.

Book excerpt: Tumor progression is driven by mutations that confer growth advantages to different subpopulations of cancer cells. As a tumor grows, these subpopulations expand, accumulate new mutations, and are subjected to selective pressures from the environment, including anticancer interventions. This process, termed clonal evolution, can lead to the emergence of therapy-resistant tumors and poses a major challenge for cancer eradication efforts. Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine examines cancer progression as an evolutionary process and explores how this way of looking at cancer may lead to more effective strategies for managing and treating it. The contributors review efforts to characterize the subclonal architecture and dynamics of tumors, understand the roles of chromosomal instability, driver mutations, and mutation order, and determine how cancer cells respond to selective pressures imposed by anticancer agents, immune cells, and other components of the tumor microenvironment. They compare cancer evolution to organismal evolution and describe how ecological theories and mathematical models are being used to understand the complex dynamics between a tumor and its microenvironment during cancer progression. The authors also discuss improved methods to monitor tumor evolution (e.g., liquid biopsies) and the development of more effective strategies for managing and treating cancers (e.g., immunotherapies). This volume will therefore serve as a vital reference for all cancer biologists as well as anyone seeking to improve clinical outcomes for patients with cancer.

This book was released on 2024-11-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The systemic inflammatory response is evident in inflammatory diseases, and the immune system secretes many cytokines involved, resulting in a robust immune response. For example, the pathogenesis of sepsis includes abnormal immune cell activation in the early stages as well as sepsis-related immunosuppression. During the immunosuppressive phase, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, Th17 cells, and ?d T cells are reduced while regulatory T cells increase. At the same time, T lymphocytes and neutrophils, as immune effector cells, interact with each other and play a key role in regulating the immune response to immune-inflammatory diseases. The increased release of neutrophil extracellular trap networks (NETs) by neutrophils leads to a significant upregulation of NETs-DNA-MPO, which further aggravates the septic inflammatory response and organ functional impairment. Therefore, it is important to deeply investigate the characteristic clinical immune phenotypes and molecular mechanisms associated with inflammatory diseases, and targeting therapies against them may provide new ideas for the precise treatment of diseases. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide a forum to advance research on the contribution of the fundamental mechanisms of immune system development and function, with special emphasis on the description and mechanism of clinical immunological phenotypes in different immune disorders and the definition of their molecular basis. The Research Topic had the bullet points including but not limited to the following: 1) Description of the immune phenotypes of various common acute and chronic diseases; 2) The regulatory mechanisms of different factors on the development and function of the host immune system; 3) Inflammatory immunological mechanisms, organ function, and interorgan interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (USE FOR PRACTITIONER/BUSINESS PIECES) In an increasingly knowledge-based economy, a company's success hinges on the quality of its people. People set strategy, make decisions, build relationships, and drive change. Businesses possess a powerful advantage if their people do their jobs better and faster than the competition. The need for more sophisticated, integrated, and strategically linked human resource applications (e.g., selection systems, training programs, and performance management interventions) is recasting the very role of HR. One of the critical tools in the HR professionals' toolkit that has been used to create these applications is job analysis. However, much of today's job analysis practice has failed to keep up with the evolutionary pace. This book is about a "next generation" job analysis method that involves translating business strategies into work performance and competency requirements, and using this information and data to create an architecture that can be used to support the sophisticated HR applications and enterprise resource planning systems that will be a part of high-performance third millennium organizations. Numerous case studies, applied examples, and project management tips contribute to the practice-oriented design of the book to illustrate a personnel research activity that is essentially an ongoing organizational development intervention.
