Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Methodist Hymn-Book Illustrated There is no exercise that I had rather live and die in, than singing praises to our Redeemer and Jehovah. While I might in the Holy Assemblies, and now when I may not, as Paul and Silas, in my bonds, and my dying pains, which are far heavier than my bonds. Lord Jesus, receive my praise and supplications first, and lastly, my departing soul. Amen.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Music and Hymnody of the Methodist Hymnal To present a dictionary of hymnology, or even to collect critical notes upon all of the seven hundred hymns in the Methodist Hymnal, is not the purpose of this little book: for it would be impossible to do this adequately within the limits of space imposed upon our study; and, besides, the more detailed treatment of the hymns (though not of the tunes) has already been ably presented by other hymnologists of the Church. But as there has often been expressed the need of a brief introduction to the Hymnal, its history, its hymns and tunes, its theology, its musical and literary beauties, together with helpful suggestions to pastors and prayer-meeting leaders - in a word, a practical guide to the Hymnal - this has, therefore, been attempted by the author. Whatever imperfections may mar the work, it is the devout hope of the author that this study may be of some service to the Masters cause in stimulating a deeper interest in the meaning and use of the hymns and tunes. Hymn-stories are told herein, some of them drawn from the common reservoirs of hymnology, a few re cited in these pages for the first time, but for the purpose more of suggesting typical conditions under which hymns are written or sung or quoted, than of explaining particular hymns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Methodist Hymn Book: Illustrated With Biography, History, Incident and Anecdote The interest which attaches to the "Collection of Hymns for the use of the people called Methodists," is much greater than many persons would be ready to acknowledge. This has been shown in many ways, and by a variety of persons and incidents. To a large number of the hymns there belongs something like inspiration, or, at the least, a special attraction, manifested by their varied uses in individual experience, in social life, and in public worship. The founders of Methodism were well aware of the importance of Psalms and Hymns as aids to a religious life. As early as the year 1736, Charles Wesley occasionally indulged in writing verses, but they were strikingly defective in theology and gloomy in sentiment. Even after the conversion of the two brothers J.and C.Wesley, in 1738, the pieces which Charles wrote partook somewhat of the spirit of the mystics, which at that time was wide spread, and to which both the brothers were for a time in bondage. In the first collection of "Hymns and Sacred Poems," issued conjointly by the two brothers in 1739, and which in that year reached a third edition, the first sentence of the preface reads thus: "Some verses in the following collection were wrote upon the scheme of the mystic divines, and these we had once in great veneration." The Divine Teacher alone enabled them to break the spell. The instruction of Peter Bohler, and the influence of the German hymns which John Wesley translated, and used so freely, greatly helped in clearing away the mystic clouds.
