The prophets were not merely men of genius, who thus became leaders of their race. No theory which omits the element of inspiration in their lives can account for the facts. They were men who wrought and spake as they were impelled by the Holy Spirit. Yet, possessing this controlling purpose, they seemingly acted with entire freedom in their choice of methods, and each maintained throughout his own characteristics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets of Israel: From the Eighth to the Fifth Century; Their Faith and Their Message There is perhaps, at the present day, no subject of biblical study which possesses more interest for the lay public than Prophecy, a fact which must be most gratifying to writers on this subject, though it carries with it one serious difficulty. For there is also probably no subject of biblical study which engages the attention of the specialists to the extent that Prophecy does; and a presentation which would fill the needs of the one class of readers would hardly meet the requirements of the other. I cannot claim to have solved this difficulty. I am aware that there are parts of the present volume which the lay reader may prefer to pass over, and that there are other parts which may seem commonplace to the scholar, but I believe that this is almost inevitable in the present stage of biblical criticism. The general reader will probably find the first and the last chapter most readable, as these were originally lectures delivered before a lay audience, the first as an exposition of the Faith of the Prophets, the second as an exposition of their Message. These lectures, which were delivered in Albany, N. Y. in January, 1910, at the request of my friend and former pupil, Rev. S. H. Goldenson, I was strongly urged to publish at the time. They are here substantially unchanged, though the second has been necessarily somewhat enlarged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets of Israel: From the Eight to the Fifth Century, Their Faith and Their Message The last Chapter, which might logically have been reserved for the second volume, has been included here in order that, as far as pre'exilic prophecy is concerned, the presentation Of the subject in this first volume might, in a summary sense at least, be complete. The institution of prophecy, whose origin lies far back in the primitive stages of religious development, was common to all the religions of antiquity. It was indigenous to Israel, even as to the other nations Of the Ancient Orient, Whether near or remote; but in Israel there arose in the course Of time another type, the so-called literary or spiritual prophecy, which from the very outset was a distinct species, in pronounced opposition to the popular, primitive prophecy. It is with the great representatives Of this specific Israelitish type of prophecy and with their importance in the history of religious thought that the present work is occupied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians sometimes approach the Old Testament with a mixture of awe and bewilderment, knowing that it contains pearls of wisdom, but unsure how to dive for them ... especially when it comes to the Prophets. In The Message of the Prophets, author J. Daniel Hays offers a scholarly, yet readable and student-friendly survey of the Old Testament prophetic literature that presents the message of each prophet in its historical and its biblical context and then tracks that message through the New Testament to challenge readers with what it means for them today. Hays focuses on synthesizing the message of the prophets, which enables students to grasp the major contours of the prophetic books clearly and concisely. Hundreds of colorful pictures help to illustrate the historical and cultural background of the prophets. After identifying what the message meant for ancient Israel, Hays helps the readers to move toward theological application today, helping readers to gain a better understanding of God and the relationship between God and his people. The Message of the Prophets is essential for professors, students, and others seeking to understand the role that the OT prophets play in the Christian faith.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prophecy and the Prophets in Ancient Israel The Jew was a person of no political importance and of no social standing. He was almost as unpopular in the Roman world as he is in Eastern Europe to-day, though not equally persecuted. He inhabited a little strip of land between the Mediterranean and the Syrian desert, and for six centuries had only intermittently enjoyed an approximate national independence. He was to the fore in commerce then as now - he had little else to live for' besides his faith - but political influence was almost denied him, and political dominance was a dream which appeared even to those who dreamed it to demand a more amazing divine interference with humanity than the world had ever' witnessed. Yet Jesus was a Jew and not a Roman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1953, The Hebrew Prophets’ conception of the meaning and purpose of human history has considerable significance for a religious view of the world situation in the middle of the 20th Century. This book discusses the nature of the Hebrew prophets and the grounds for their claim to inspiration. He then examines the fundamental and universal religious ideas underlying their pronouncements. Particular attention is paid to their views on the basis of human morals, the character of the good society, the duties of government and the relation between religion and politics. Other chapters deal with their ideas of true religion and of the relation of God to human life.

Book excerpt: A radical reinterpretation of the biblical prophets by one of America's most provocative critics reveals the eternal beauty of their language and the enduring resonance of their message. Long before Norman Podhoretz became one of the intellectual leaders of American neoconservatism, he was a student of Hebrew literature and a passionate reader of the prophets of the Old Testament. Returning to them after fifty years, he has produced something remarkable: an entirely new perspective on some of the world's best-known works. Or, rather, three new perspectives. The first is a fascinating account of the golden age of biblical prophecy, from the eighth to the fifth century B.C.E., and its roots in earlier ages of the ancient Israelite saga. Thus, like large parts of the Bible itself, The Prophets is a history of the Near East from the point of view of a single nation, covering not only what is known about the prophets themselves -- including Elijah, Amos, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel -- but also the stories of King David, King Saul, and how the ancient Israelites were affected by the great Near Eastern empires that surrounded them. Layered into this work of history is a piece of extraordinary literary criticism. Podhoretz's very close reading of the verse and imagery used by the biblical prophets restores them to the top reaches of the poetic pantheon, for these books contain, unequivocally, some of the greatest poetry ever written. The historical chronicle and the literary criticism will transport readers to a time that is both exotic and familiar and, like any fine work of history or literature, will evoke a distinct and original world. But the third perspective of The Prophets is that of moral philosophy, and it serves to bring the prophets' message into the twenty-first century. For to Norman Podhoretz, the real relevance of the prophets today is more than the excitement of their history or the beauty of their poetry: it is their message. Podhoretz sees, in the words of the biblical prophets, a war being waged, a war against the sin of revering anything made by the hands of man -- in short, idolatry. In their relentless battle against idolatry, Podhoretz finds the prophets' most meaningful and enduring message: a stern warning against the all-consuming worship of self that is at least as relevant in the twenty-first century as it was three thousand years ago. The Prophets will earn the respect of biblical scholars and the fascinated attention of general readers; its observations will be equally valued by believers and nonbelievers, by anyone with spiritual yearnings. Learned, provocative, and beautifully written, The Prophets is a deeply felt, deeply satisfying work that is at once history, literary criticism, and moral philosophy -- a tour de force.
