Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Jacques) Giacomo Girolamo Casanova de Seingalt (1725-1798) was a Venetian adventurer and author. His main book Histoire de Ma Vie (History of My Life), part autobiography and part memoir, is regarded as one of the most authentic sources of the customs and norms of European social life during the 18th century. So famous a womanizer was the Italian-born libertine Giacomo Casanova that, a full two centuries after his death, his name remains synonymous with the art of seduction. But for the years he spent in the employ of Count Waldstein of Bohemia as a librarian, Casanova, "the world's greatest lover" - at one-time the company of European royalty, popes and cardinals, and man known to the likes of Voltaire, Goethe and Mozart - would have been consigned to obscurity. He began to think about writing his memoirs around 1780 and began in earnest by 1789, as "the only remedy to keep from going mad or dying of grief." The first draft was completed by July 1792, and he spent the next six years revising it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoirs of Casanova (1792) is the autobiography of Italian adventure and socialite Giacomo Casanova. Written at the end of his life, the Memoirs capture the experiences of one of Europe’s most notorious figures, a man whose escapades as a gambler, womanizer, and socialite are matched only by his unique gift for sharing them with the world. More than perhaps any other man, Casanova sought to emulate the lessons of the Enlightenment on the level of everyday life, a sentiment captured perfectly in the opening sentence of his Memoirs: “I will begin with this confession: whatever I have done in the course of my life, whether it be good or evil, has been done freely; I am a free agent.” Memoirs of Casanova Volume IV covers the young adulthood of Giacomo Casanova. As his time in Corfu draws to a close, the young Casanova revels in the final days of a heated love affair with Madame F., a beautiful noblewoman. Ending his military career, he returns to Venice and pursues the life of a professional gambler, but soon finds that his compulsiveness proves a poor match for the patience and cunning required of the craft. Desperately broke, he attempts to make a living as a violinist while continuing his fast, hedonistic lifestyle. When a chance encounter ends with him saving the life of a Venetian senator, Casanova begins several years of service under his patronage. Life as a nobleman is difficult for a young libertine, however, and as his patron’s patience wears thin, Casanova looks to reinvent himself once more. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Giacomo Casanova’s Memoirs of Casanova is a classic of European literature reimagined for modern readers.

In this volume, Casanova finds himself in various European cities, including Dresden, Berlin, and Paris, where he engages in romantic and sexual exploits with numerous women, including actresses, courtesans, and aristocrats. He also rubs shoulders with prominent figures of the time, such as Voltaire and Frederick the Great. His Memoirs provide an intimate insight into the life of European society in the eighteenth century. These Memoirs are the history of a unique life, a unique personality, one of the greatest of autobiographies; as a record of adventures. They tell the story of a man who loved life passionately for its own sake: one to whom woman was, indeed, the most important thing in the world, but to whom nothing in the world was indifferent. The bust which gives us the most lively notion of him shows us a great, vivid, intellectual face, full of fiery energy and calm resource, the face of a thinker and a fighter in one.

Book excerpt: Giacomo Girolamo Casanova was born in Venice in 1725 to actress Zanetta Farussi, wife of actor and dancer Gaetano Giuseppe Casanova. Giacomo was the first of six children, being followed by Francesco Giuseppe (1727–1803), Giovanni Battista (1730–1795), Faustina Maddalena (1731–1736), Maria Maddalena Antonia Stella (1732–1800), and Gaetano Alvise (1734–1783). At the time of Casanova's birth, the Republic of Venice thrived as the pleasure capital of Europe, ruled by political and religious conservatives who tolerated social vices and encouraged tourism. It was a required stop on the Grand Tour, traveled by young men coming of age, especially Englishmen. The famed Carnival, gambling houses, and beautiful courtesans were powerful drawing cards. This was the milieu that bred Casanova and made him its most famous and representative citizen. -wikipedia

In a signal encounter with the famous French philosopher and writer Voltaire, Casanova explains that "I amuse myself by studying people as I travel . . . it is fun to study the world while passing through it." Indeed, Giacomo Casanova de Seingalt, traveller, adventurer, musician, lover, escaped convict, and avid reader, brings to his monumental The Story of My Life(Histoire de ma vie) an explicit relish-and aptitude-for intimate observations on human nature, customs, gastronomy, science, literature, economics, and religion.
