Download or read book POSTI written by Larry Nichols and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-25 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Posti was a war hero. During WWII, he was the only person in history to shoot down a German Focke-Wolfe fighter plane with his father’s Smith and Wesson, 38 cal. Service Revolver. He later became a executive chef, and a close friend to celebrities including, Clark Gable, Elvis Presley, Pavarotti, Frank Sinatra and the world renown Rat Pack. Frank Sinatra was introduced to Paul’s cooking when Paul would give him free meals to help him out. Posti’s thoughtfulness and help was appreciated by Frank Sinatra, so what began as a kind gesture turned into a life-long friendship. Posti became Sinatra’s personal chef for over 24 years. Along with his employer and owner of The Brown Derby, Bob Cobb, Paul created the now famous Cobb Salad, which he literally concocted on the spot to please a demanding Cecil B. DeMille. He even had occasion to kick a hungry young kid named Elvis Presley out of his kitchen at the Knickerbocker Hotel. Later, Posti and The King became good friends. His dearest friend was probably the legendary Mel Blanc, the man who brought Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and a host of other voices to life. Most of the stars every American knew from the 40's 50's 60's and 70's knew Paul Posti. From the Brown Derby to the Villa Capri, he was the chef to Hollywood's royalty. Posti made his mark as a chef during a time when fine dining was highly esteemed. For him, cooking was not just a job, but rather an art form, He would sometimes say with a smirk, “Cooking is the soul of partying, at all times and all ages.”

Book Synopsis Creole Italian by : Justin A. Nystrom
Download or read book Creole Italian written by Justin A. Nystrom and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Creole Italian, Justin A. Nystrom explores the influence Sicilian immigrants have had on New Orleans foodways. His culinary journey follows these immigrants from their first impressions on Louisiana food culture in the mid-1830s and along their path until the 1970s. Each chapter touches on events that involved Sicilian immigrants and the relevancy of their lives and impact on New Orleans. Sicilian immigrants cut sugarcane, sold groceries, ran truck farms, operated bars and restaurants, and manufactured pasta. Citing these cultural confluences, Nystrom posits that the significance of Sicilian influence on New Orleans foodways traditionally has been undervalued and instead should be included, along with African, French, and Spanish cuisine, in the broad definition of "creole." Creole Italian chronicles how the business of food, broadly conceived, dictated the reasoning, means, and outcomes for a large portion of the nearly forty thousand Sicilian immigrants who entered America through the port of New Orleans in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries and how their actions and those of their descendants helped shape the food town we know today.

Book Synopsis A Dictionary of the Space Age by : Paul Dickson
Download or read book A Dictionary of the Space Age written by Paul Dickson and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-04-14 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957 ushered in an exciting era of scientific and technological advancement. As television news anchors, radio hosts, and journalists reported the happenings of the American and the Soviet space programs to millions of captivated citizens, words that belonged to the worlds of science, aviation, and science fiction suddenly became part of the colloquial language. What's more, NASA used a litany of acronyms in much of its official correspondence in an effort to transmit as much information in as little time as possible. To translate this peculiar vocabulary, Paul Dickson has compiled the curious lingo and mystifying acronyms of NASA in an accessible dictionary of the names, words, and phrases of the Space Age." "This dictionary captures a broader foundation for the language of the Space Age based on the historical principles employed by the Oxford English Dictionary and Webster's Third New International Dictionary. Word histories for major terms are detailed in a conversational tone, and technical terms are deciphered for the interested student and lay reader. This is a must-own reference for space history buffs." --Book Jacket.
Book Synopsis The Patient as Text by : Petter Aaslestad
Download or read book The Patient as Text written by Petter Aaslestad and published by Radcliffe Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A commonly-held model of the doctor-patient relationship casts it as a subject/object relationship: broadly the patient is a 'text', and the doctor the reader or interpreter of that text. However, recent critical models preset notions of text and reader as complex and unstable, and the relationship of doctor and patient as similarly complicated. Explorations of psychiatry and 'madness' by critics such as Michel Foucault present a further background of complex ideological change. In The Patient as Text, Petter Aaslestad explores selections from over a century of psychiatric notes from Gaustad Hospital, Norway against this critical background, exploring the impact of ideological and medical changes surrounding the psychiatric clinical relationship and psychiatric professionals as constructors of narratives. This book will be of interest to researchers in the medical humanities, psychiatric practitioners, and those with an interest in medical history and critical theory.
