Book excerpt: This report covers engine tests performed in Altitude Test Facilities (ATFs) with the primary purpose of determining steady state thrust at simulated altitude flight conditions as part of the in-flight thrust determination process. As such it is complementary to AIR1703 and AIR5450, published by the SAE E-33 Technical Committee. The gross thrust determined using such tests may be used to generate other thrust-related parameters that are frequently applied in the assessment of propulsion system performance. For example: net thrust, specific thrust, and exhaust nozzle coefficients.The report provides a general description of ATFs including all the major features. These are: Test cell air supply system. This controls the inlet pressure and includes flow straightening, humidity and temperature conditioning. Air inlet duct and slip joint. Note that the report only covers the case where the inlet duct is connected to the engine, not free jet testing. Thrust stand force measurement system Test cell Cell exhaust system Measurement systemThe report provides detailed technical information on how the facilities are operated, including: Program planning guidelines Optimization of the tests Setting and control of flight conditions Assessment of the dataA technical discussion provides the underlying physics for: Air mass flow determination Determination of the conditions in the inlet duct and slip joint Derivation of thrust and related parameters Correction of data to nominal flight conditions Measurement uncertaintyThe initial issue of this report primarily address ATF testing of engines intended for use on subsonic, transport aircraft. Future revisions to the report will include greater content relevant to the testing of engines for supersonic aircraft, including the wider and higher flight envelopes associated with such aircraft and the technical issues raised by these flight conditions. The aim of the document is to assemble and record the current knowledge of the use of an Altitude Test Facility (ATF) in support of In-Flight Thrust Determination (IFTD). There is a particular need to identify and understand the defined test processes that have the greatest influence on the accuracy of the result. The document will address the key concerns and recommend best practices for optimizing them.

Book excerpt: Laboratory tests indicated that: (1) the gross thrust value computed theoretically from the measured pressures were within plus or minus 2.0% of the thrust stand measured gross thrust, (2) the thrustmeter gross thrust values were within plus or minus 3.0% of the thrust stand measured values, (3) the net thrust values computed theoretically from the measured pressures were within plus or minus 3.9% of the thrust stand measured net thrust, and (4) the thrustmeter net thrust values were within plus or minus 4.2% of the thrust stand measured net thrust. The gross thrust computer module malfunctioned for a series of tests at a simulated altitude condition of 40,000 feet and Mach 1.2. Flight test results indicated that the system functioned properly aboard the aircraft and was responsive to small changes in engine power setting. The thrustmeter gross thrust and net thrust values agreed with the computed gross and net thrust of the engine within plus or minus 2.2% and plus or minus 2.8% respectively. In measuring net thrust during the flight tests, some difficulty was encountered in obtaining consistent static pressure readings at the compressor inlet station thus causing errors in the computation of ram drag. Book excerpt: Deficiencies in established techniques of measuring aircraft thrust in flight led to the application of the gas generator method of calculating engine thrust to the XB-70-1 airplane. A series of tests on a ground static-thrust stand [were]performed on the airplane to establish at ground static conditions the accuracy of this method, to measure the installed thrust of the YJ93-GE-3 engine, and to determine the effect of instrumentation errors and nonuniform flows at the engine compressor face on the thrust calculation. Tests with an aerodynamically choked inlet, an opened inlet-bypass system, and varying combinations of operating engines were also conducted. Results showed that the accuracy of the gas generator method was ±2 percent for the normal operation of the XB-70-1 airplane at ground static conditions and for the upper 70 percent of the engine's throttle range. They also showed that the effect of individual instrument errors on the thrust calculation was reduced because of the large number of measurements and that abnormally high inlet flow distortion affects the thrust calculation. When corrected for inlet losses, the installed thrust of the YJ93-GE-3 engine agreed favorably with the engine manufacturer's uninstalled estimated thrust for all power settings except those at the low end.--P.
