Book excerpt: Winner of the 2011 Isaac and Tamara Deutscher Memorial Prize. The essays collected here straddle four decades of work in both historiography and Marxist theory, combining source-based historical work in a wide range of languages with sophisticated discussion of Marx's categories. Key themes include the distinctions that are crucial to restoring complexity to the Marxist notion of a 'mode of production'; the emergence of medieval relations of production; the origins of capitalism; the dichotomy between free and unfree labour; and essays in agrarian history that range widely from Byzantine Egypt to 19th-century colonialism. The essays demonstrate the importance of reintegrating theory with history and of bringing history back into historical materialism. An introductory chapter ties the collection together and shows how historical materialists can develop an alternative to Marx's 'Asiatic mode of production'.

Book Synopsis Essays on the Materialistic Conception of History by : Antonio Labriola
Download or read book Essays on the Materialistic Conception of History written by Antonio Labriola and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our doctrine does not pretend to be the intellectual vision of a great plan or of a design, but it is merely a method of research and of conception. It is not by accident that Marx spoke of his discovery as a guiding thread, and it is precisely for this reason that it is analogous to Darwinism, which also is a method...-from "Historical Materialism"One of the great European Marxists-in this volume, published in Italy in 1896 and in America in 1908-commemorates the then-upcoming 50th anniversary of Marx's Communist Manifesto, "our first unquestioned entrance into history." Explaining and elaborating upon Marx's philosophies, Labriola applies scientific and practical philosophy to Marxism, offering significant clarification, in layman's terms, of the Manifesto. Students of European and American socialism will find this an invaluable document, evidence of a fulcrum moment in global history, when socialism's prospects were far brighter than they are today.Philosopher and revolutionary ANTONIO LABRIOLA (1843-1904) is considered the father of Italian Marxism. Born in Cassino, Italy, he was educated at the University of Naples and wrote for numerous liberal political journals. Among his books are Problems of the Philosophy of History and Socialism (1889) and Correspondence on Philosophy and Socialism (1898).
Book Synopsis Bodies and Artefacts: Historical Materialism as Corporeal Semiotics (2 vols.) by : Joseph Fracchia
Download or read book Bodies and Artefacts: Historical Materialism as Corporeal Semiotics (2 vols.) written by Joseph Fracchia and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 1450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a seemingly offhand, often overlooked comment, Karl Marx deemed ‘human corporeal organisation’ the ‘first fact of human history’. Following Marx’s corporeal turn and pursuing the radical implications of his corporeal insight, this book undertakes a reconstruction of the corporeal foundations of historical materialism. Part I exposes the corporeal roots of Marx’s materialist conception of history and historical-materialist Wissenschaft. Part II attempts a historical-materialist mapping of human corporeal organisation. Suggesting how to approach human histories up from their corporeal foundations, Part III elaborates historical-materialism as ‘corporeal semiotics’. Part IV, a case study of Marx’s critique of capitalist socio-economic and cultural forms, reveals the corporeal foundations of that critique and the corporeal depth of his vision of human freedom and dignity.

Download or read book Karl Marx written by Karl Korsch and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The republication of Karl Korsch's Karl Marx (1938) makes available to a new generation of readers the most concise account of Karl Marx's thought by one of the major figures of twentieth-century Western Marxism. Originally written for publication in a series on 'Modern Sociologists', Korsch's book sought to bring Marx's work to life for an audience of non-specialist readers. As Michael Buckmiller writes in his new introduction to the work, Korsch wanted his book to serve as a passport into the non-dogmatic sections of the American labour movement. The result is a bracing, concise, and accessible overview of the entirety of Marx's thought, and a pungent history of 'Marxism' itself.

In this expanded edition, Cohen offers his own account of the history, and the further promise, of analytical Marxism. Download or read book The German Ideology written by Karl Marx and published by Martino Fine Books. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2011 Reprint of 1939 Edition. Parts I & III of "The German Ideology." Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Originally published by the Marx-Engels Institute in Moscow in 1939. "The German Ideology" was written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels circa 1846, but published later. The original edition was divided into three parts. Part I, the most significant, is perhaps the classic statement of the Marxist theory of history and his much cited "materialist conception of history." Since its first publication, Marxist scholars have found Part I "The German Ideology" particularly valuable since it is perhaps the most comprehensive statement of Marx's theory of history stated at such length and detail. Part II consisted of many satirically written polemics against Bruno Bauer, other Young Hegelians, and Max Stirner. These polemical and highly partisan sections of the "German Ideology" have not been reproduced in this edition. We reprint Parts I & Parts III only. Part III treats Marx & Engels' conception of true socialism and is reprinted in its entirety. Part II has not been reprinted in this edition in order to produce a small and inexpensive book which contains the gist of the "German Ideology." Appendix contains the "Theses on Feuerbach." Index of authors, with scholarly citations and footnotes.
