Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If it is a good thing to use drama for education, there must be something specific about drama that makes it good for the purpose. It has power of some kind: it makes things meaningful that would otherwise be meaningless, or things memorable that would otherwise be forgettable. Or perhaps it enables independent thought in an area that would otherwise become mere rote learning. Many practitioners believe that drama has the power to develop learner autonomy, or even to give learners power over their lives. In the last twenty years, a widespread view has developed that this 'something' that creates the benefit of drama is 'aesthetics'. There are many views of aesthetics, but what unites them is the special significance that art has for our lives. This book is about the relation between aesthetics and education in the use of drama. Within it, philosophy appears as the essential connecting discipline between the practice of arts-based education and our advancing knowledge of the interrelations of cognition, emotion, and embodiment. Matthew DeCoursey argues that the power of dramatic art is to be found in its bodily, emotional nature. Drawing on recent work in the aesthetics of theatre, he shows that much of the power of theatre can be attributed to a specific range of ideas and techniques, notably including double meaning-making, aesthetic focus and dramatic tension. Finally, the author relates different forms of drama education to different educational results, holding that the conventional improvised forms are neither superior nor inferior to scripted theatre, but merely serve different purposes. Among those educational results discussed are the emancipation sought both by Rancière and by many practitioners of applied theatre, but also curricular areas, including language education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Lacan's Écrits is the first extensive set of commentaries on the complete edition of Lacan's Écrits to be published in English, providing an indispensable companion piece to some of Lacan's best-known but notoriously challenging writings. With the contributions of some of the world's most renowned Lacanian scholars and analysts, Reading Lacan's Écrits encompasses a series of systematic, paragraph-by-paragraph commentaries that not only contextualise, explain and interrogate Lacan's arguments but also afford the reader multiple interpretive routes through the complete edition of Lacan's most labyrinthine of texts. Considering the significance of Écrits as a landmark in the history of psychoanalysis, this far-reaching and accessible guide will sustain and continue to animate critical engagement with one of the most challenging intellectual works of the twentieth century. These volumes act as an essential and incisive reference-text for psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists in training and in practice, as well as philosophers, cultural theorists and literary, social science and humanities researchers. This volume covers the first two sections of the Écrits, providing close readings of the first eight essays.

Book excerpt: AMARANTHE III: RESONANCE delivers over 1,400 pages of Sci-Fi Adventure **Includes the Aurora Resonant trilogy (Relativity, Rubicon, Requiem), the 3rd trilogy in the Amaranthe universe, + a short story + bonus material** Our universe is but a snowglobe—an experiment born of desperation and hope. The true universe is unfathomably vast, teeming with life and untold wonders. And it is enslaved. Created by ancient aliens in a daring gambit to understand the nature of the enemy, humanity is now asked to be the savior of a universe not their own. If they are to succeed, they must rise above not only their fractious past but the sins of their genetic ancestors to boldly embrace a future they never dared imagine possible. * RELATIVITY (Aurora Resonant Book One) "I'd tell you to be careful, but we wouldn't be here if you'd ever taken that advice. No reason to start now, right?" For millennia the Anadens have ruled the known universe. They believe they've crafted the perfect empire, ordered and impervious to challenge. They believe the fight has been crushed out of the species they subjugate. They are wrong. It's a suicide mission, without a doubt. Alex Solovy and Caleb Marano must steal crucial intelligence from the Anadens' central military headquarters. To succeed, they'll need to navigate a strange universe ruled by a cabal of powerful immortals, populated by aliens they've never met and fueled by technology they've never seen. They're going to need a little help--the kind of help only a suicidally defiant anarchist on the run from more than just personal demons can provide. ** AMARANTHE III: RESONANCE WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED UNDER THE TITLE "AURORA RESONANT: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION" ** *** AMARANTHE UNIVERSE: --------------------------------------- AMARANTHE I: RISE (Starshine, Vertigo, Transcendence) AMARANTHE II: REBELLION (Sidespace, Dissonance, Abysm) AMARANTHE III: RESONANCE (Relativity, Rubicon, Resonance) AMARANTHE IV: MACHINA (Exin Ex Machina, Of A Darker Void, The Stars Like Gods) AMARANTHE V: RIVEN (Continuum, Inversion, Echo Rift) AMARANTHE VI: VERGE (All Our Tomorrows, Chaotica, Duality) ~ COSMIC SHORES ~ (a new entry point for the series - each book can be read at any time and without reading any of the other books) MEDUSA FALLING (A Cosmic Shores Novel) THE THIEF (A Cosmic Shores Novel)

Book excerpt: The epic and mind-blowing finale to this visionary space opera series surpasses all expectation: Menelaus Montrose, having forged an uneasy alliance with his immortal adversary, Ximen del Azarchel, maps a future on a scale beyond anything previously imagined. No longer concerned with the course of history across mere millennia, Montrose and del Azarchel have become the architects of aeons, bringing forth minds the size of planets as they steer the bizarre intellectual descendants of an extinct humanity. Ever driving their labors and their enmity is the hope of reunion with their shared lost love, the posthuman Rania, whose eventual return is by no means assured, but who may unravel everything these eternal rivals have sought to achieve. John C. Wright's The Architect of Aeons is the latest in his millennia spanning space opera.
