Book Synopsis Phallic Worship: A Description of The Mysteries of The Sex Worship of The Ancients With The History of The Masculine Cross by : Anonymous
Download or read book Phallic Worship: A Description of The Mysteries of The Sex Worship of The Ancients With The History of The Masculine Cross written by Anonymous and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex Worship has prevailed among all peoples of ancient times, sometimes contemporaneous and often mixed with Star, Serpent, and Tree Worship. The powers of nature were sexualised and endowed with the same feelings, passions, and performing the same functions as human beings. Among the ancients, whether the Sun, the Serpent, or the Phallic Emblem was worshipped, the idea was the same—the veneration of the generative principle. Thus we find a close relationship between the various mythologies of the ancient nations, and by a comparison of the creeds, ideas, and symbols, can see that they spring from the same source, namely, the worship of the forces and operations of nature, the original of which was doubtless Sun worship. It is not necessary to prove that in primitive times the Sun must have been worshipped under various names, and venerated as the Creator, Light, Source of Life, and the Giver of Food. In the earliest times the worship of the generative power was of the most simple and pure character, rude in manner, primitive in form, pure in idea, the homage of man to the supreme power, the Author of life. Afterwards the worship became more depraved, a religion of feeling, sensuous bliss, corrupted by a priesthood who were not slow to take advantage of this state of affairs, and inculcated with it profligate and mysterious ceremonies, union of gods with women, religious prostitution and other degrading rites. Thus it was not long before the emblems lost their pure and simple meaning and became licentious statues and debased objects. Hence we have the depraved ceremonies at the worship of Bacchus, who became, not only the representative of the creative power, but the God of pleasure and licentiousness. The corrupted religion always found eager votaries, willing to be captives to a pleasant bondage by the impulse of physical bliss, as was the case in India and Egypt, and among the Phœnicians, Babylonians, Jews and other nations. Sex worship once personified became the supreme and governing deity, enthroned as the ruling God over all; dissent therefrom was impious and punished. The priests of the worship compelled obedience; monarchs complied to the prevailing faith and became willing devotees to the shrines of Isis and Venus on the one hand, and of Bacchus and Priapus on the other, by appealing to the most animating passion of nature.

Download or read book Desire and Excess written by Jonah Siegel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000-08-20 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating look at the creative power of institutions, Jonah Siegel explores the rise of the modern idea of the artist in the nineteenth century, a period that also witnessed the emergence of the museum and the professional critic. Treating these developments as interrelated, he analyzes both visual material and literary texts to portray a culture in which art came to be thought of in powerful new ways. Ultimately, Siegel shows that artistic controversies commonly associated with the self-consciously radical movements of modernism and postmodernism have their roots in a dynamic era unfairly characterized as staid, self-satisfied, and stable. The nineteenth century has been called the Age of the Museum, and yet critics, art theorists, and poets during this period grappled with the question of whether the proliferation of museums might lead to the death of Art itself. Did the assembly and display of works of art help the viewer to understand them or did it numb the senses? How was the contemporary artist to respond to the vast storehouses of art from disparate nations and periods that came to proliferate in this era? Siegel presents a lively discussion of the shock experienced by neoclassical artists troubled by remains of antiquity that were trivial or even obscene, as well as the anxious aesthetic reveries of nineteenth-century art lovers overwhelmed by the quantity of objects quickly crowding museums and exhibition halls. In so doing, he illuminates the fruitful crises provoked when the longing for admired art is suddenly satisfied. Drawing upon neoclassical art and theory, biographies of early nineteenth-century writers including Keats and Scott, and the writings of art critics such as Hazlitt, Ruskin, and Wilde, this book reproduces a cultural matrix that brings to life the artistic passions and anxieties of an entire era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short book on ancient 'Phallic worship', as the Victorians called it, contains much which is covered in the other entries in this literature. Jennings has a compelling thesis about the role of sexuality in ancient religions and their modern successors which bears careful examination. A tremendous and controversial undertaking for its time, this book unearths some of the most fascinating connections between the world of Christianity and sexual imagery, adventure and exotica. Without missing a beat, Rocco has seen to it that her readers are not only kept fascinated, but that her own theories and precepts remain strong in the reader's mind. It doesn't matter that her words reach out from a past century. Their ring is clear and their message loud, even by today's standards. Rocco moves from an intrinsic philosophy of the cross and its shape and form in theoretical gendering, while leaving no stone unturned in her discussions of the Triad and Vocabulary of the ancients. This woman finds sex in every nook and cranny of history, letting nothing stand in her way to complete sexual discovery. Her writing style remains clear and easy to read, while packed with the most interesting of facts, theories and suggestions.
