Book Synopsis Empires of Print by : Patrick Scott Belk
Download or read book Empires of Print written by Patrick Scott Belk and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, the publishing industries in Britain and the United States underwent dramatic expansions and reorganization that brought about an increased traffic in books and periodicals around the world. Focusing on adventure fiction published from 1899 to 1919, Patrick Scott Belk looks at authors such as Joseph Conrad, H.G. Wells, Conan Doyle, and John Buchan to explore how writers of popular fiction engaged with foreign markets and readers through periodical publishing. Belk argues that popular fiction, particularly the adventure genre, developed in ways that directly correlate with authors’ experiences, and shows that popular genres of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries emerged as one way of marketing their literary works to expanding audiences of readers worldwide. Despite an over-determined print space altered by the rise of new kinds of consumers and transformations of accepted habits of reading, publishing, and writing, the changes in British and American publishing at the turn of the twentieth century inspired an exciting new period of literary invention and experimentation in the adventure genre, and the greater part of that invention and experimentation was happening in the magazines.
Book Synopsis The German Empire Between Two Wars by : Robert Herndon Fife
Download or read book The German Empire Between Two Wars written by Robert Herndon Fife and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Empire Between Two Wars: A Study of the Political and Social Development of the Nation Between 1871 and 1914 No political development in the past half-century has been so striking as the growth of the German empire. Such a statement is the merest platitude to-day when the world is being rocked to its foundation by the frightful readjustment which may be traced mainly to this cause. It is, perhaps, equally trite to say that hand in hand with this growth there has gone forward an evolution within the empire which is just as striking. Year after year as the nation went on adding to its population and pilling up matchless resources and industry and commerce and still greater possibilities in the training of its scientist and men of affairs it also added tremendously to its burdens and problems. To the growing dangers without there were added dangers within, caused by the ever sharpening strife between feudalism and democracy, agriculture and commerce, industry and labor. The unstable equilibrium thus caused might long since have toppled to a fall had not the rise in power without been accompanied by a growing devotion to national unity and national ambitions. Out of the turmoil of Germany's foreign and domestic struggles there has stood forth more and more clearly great contrast, the contrast between the progress of the nation along economic lines and its arrest in political and social development. It was this contrast, which has struck the attention of so many observers, that suggested the present work. Book Synopsis America, Empire of Liberty by : David Reynolds
Download or read book America, Empire of Liberty written by David Reynolds and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The best one-volume history of the United States ever written" (Joseph J. Ellis) It was Thomas Jefferson who envisioned the United States as a great "empire of liberty." This paradoxical phrase may be the key to the American saga: How could the anti-empire of 1776 became the world's greatest superpower? And how did the country that offered unmatched liberty nevertheless found its prosperity on slavery and the dispossession of Native Americans? In this new single-volume history spanning the entire course of US history—from 1776 through the election of Barack Obama—prize-winning historian David Reynolds explains how tensions between empire and liberty have often been resolved by faith—both the evangelical Protestantism that has energized American politics for centuries and the larger faith in American righteousness that has driven the country's expansion. Written with verve and insight, Empire of Liberty brilliantly depicts America in all of its many contradictions.
Download or read book Habits of Empire written by Walter Nugent and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-06-09 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its founding, the United States' declared principles of liberty and democracy have often clashed with aggressive policies of imperial expansion. In this sweeping narrative history, acclaimed scholar Walter Nugent explores this fundamental American contradiction by recounting the story of American land acquisition since 1782 and shows how this steady addition of territory instilled in the American people a habit of empire-building. From America's early expansions into Transappalachia and the Louisiana Purchase through later additions of Alaska and island protectorates in the Caribbean and Pacific, Nugent demonstrates that the history of American empire is a tale of shifting motives, as the early desire to annex land for a growing population gave way to securing strategic outposts for America's global economic and military interests. Thorough, enlightening, and well-sourced, this book explains the deep roots of American imperialism as no other has done.
