Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical hermeneutics is the science of interpreting the Bible. The aim of this book is to explain and illustrate the various principles of Bible interpretation that must be followed if one is to understand the teachings of God's Word correctly. Such a study is pivotal to anyone who studies the Bible. Unless consistent principles of interpreting its passages are followed the truth of God becomes blurred and confused. Determining what the Bible means must precede all application of its words to the lives of its readers and hearers. Dr. S. Franklin Logsdon, Bible teacher and evangelist, says of this book: "These principles of Bible study by Dr. J. Edwin Hartill have been tested and proved in his own personal teaching for many years. They are succinct, pointed, practical, original, understandable -- simple keys to unlock the storehouse of Scripture to things both old and new. This publication makes a distinct contribution to Bible lovers in their search for increased knowledge of divine truth. It is a privilege and an honor to commend it to God's people." Using a graphic combination of text, charts, and outlines, Dr. Hartill states, "I trust that as you study these principles, your understanding of the Word and your love for its truth may deepen, so that you may more ably pass it on to others." Included are chapters on: - The Dispensational Principle - The Covenantal Principle - The Ethnic Division Principle - The Discrimination Principle - The Predictive Principle - The Application Principle - The Typical Principle - The Principle of Human Willingness in Illumination - The First Mention Principle - The Progressive Mention Principle - The Full Mention Principle - The Context Principle - The Agreement Principle - The Direct Statement Principle - The Gap Principle - The Three-fold Principle - The Election Principle - The Repetition Principle - The Synthetic Principle - The Principle of Illustrative Mention - The Double Reference Principle - The Christo-Centric Principle - The Numerical Principle

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are corporate scientists and the supplement industry fooling us? Big business, politics and chemical manufacturers influence the course of health care—even so-called “natural” health care—more than most of us realize. Instead of understanding and appreciating natural foods and environmental health, we have been confused and misled to believe that scientists can improve on Nature without creating a dangerous chain reaction of side effects and toxicity. If you take vitamin supplements, Man Cannot Live on Vitamins Alone, by Dr. Vic Shayne, is a wake-up call that can save you and your family’s health. This critically-important, easy-to-read book scientifically proves that vitamins and other nutrients are nutritious only when still contained in their original foods. Supplements are either natural or they are not, and there’s nothing natural about a vitamin that has been extracted from a food or made in a laboratory. This book shows you how to tell the difference between real nutrition and foods that have been altered by science!

Book excerpt: Interest in lipid metabolism and polyunsaturated fatty acids in relation to sperm production has increased during the last decade. The motivation for the research described in this book originates from the discovery that sperm lipids contain extremely high proportions of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, thus establishing a link between lipid biochemistry and male fertility. Moreover, the fact that polyunsaturated fatty acids must, in some form, be supplied in the diet suggests a relationship between fertility and nutrition and raises the possibility of improving male fertility by dietary means. This book gives the reader an up-to-date view of several aspects of male fertility in relation to lipid and fatty acid metabolism. Researchers in the domain of male fertility, fatty acid metabolism, and antioxidants; medical personnel involved in the treatment of male infertility; fat technologists; students in nutrition, dietetics, biochemistry, pharmacy, and medicine; and everybody interested in the field will find this book useful.

Book excerpt: Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of surgical diseases in one easy to use reference that combines multiple teaching formats. The book begins using a case based approach. The cases presented cover the diseases most commonly encountered on a surgical rotation. The cases are designed to provide the reader with the classic findings on history and physical examination. The case presentation is followed by a series of short questions and answers, designed to provide further understanding of the important aspects of the history, physical examination, differential diagnosis, diagnostic work-up and management, as well as questions that may arise on surgical rounds. Key figures and tables visually reinforce the important elements of the disease process. A brief algorithmic flow chart is provided so the reader can quickly understand the optimal management approach. Two additional special sections further strengthen the student’s comprehension. The first section covers areas of controversy in the diagnosis or management of each disease, and another section discusses pitfalls to avoid, where the inexperienced clinician might get in trouble. The text concludes with a series of multiple choice questions in a surgery shelf/USMLE format with robust explanations. Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review is based on 20 years of Socratic medical student teaching by a nine-time Golden Apple teaching awardee from the UCLA School of Medicine and will be of great utility for medical students when they rotate on surgery, interns, physician assistant students, nursing students and nurse practitioner students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preventing Disease, the offspring of an extraordinary collaboration between the U.S. and Canadian Preventive Services Task Forces, presents a meticulous and objective review of the published evidence on preventive measures. Examining such diverse and relevant topics as screening for endometrial cancer, exercise counselling for healthy adults, and the evidence for a causal relation between dietary lipids and coronary heart disease, this volume reflects the editors' shared conviction that recommendations for preventive action should rarely exceed what is well justified by the evidence. In the current period, characterized as the Second Public Health Revolution, the authors' hard-nosed approach leads them to ask the tough questions. Are preventive measures cost-saving? Does preventive screening actually lead to treatment in clinical practice? Does the treatment do more good than harm? To what extent does our desire to eliminate causes of serious disability, ill health and premature death cloud our objectivity? All concerned about preventive medicine, community health, and primary care will find valuable stimulation for thought and action in this book: the contributions have gone beyond the rhetoric.
