Download or read book Middlesex written by Jeffrey Eugenides and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning eight decades and chronicling the wild ride of a Greek-American family through the vicissitudes of the twentieth century, Jeffrey Eugenides’ witty, exuberant novel on one level tells a traditional story about three generations of a fantastic, absurd, lovable immigrant family -- blessed and cursed with generous doses of tragedy and high comedy. But there’s a provocative twist. Cal, the narrator -- also Callie -- is a hermaphrodite. And the explanation for this takes us spooling back in time, through a breathtaking review of the twentieth century, to 1922, when the Turks sacked Smyrna and Callie’s grandparents fled for their lives. Back to a tiny village in Asia Minor where two lovers, and one rare genetic mutation, set our narrator’s life in motion. Middlesex is a grand, utterly original fable of crossed bloodlines, the intricacies of gender, and the deep, untidy promptings of desire. It’s a brilliant exploration of divided people, divided families, divided cities and nations -- the connected halves that make up ourselves and our world.

Book Synopsis International Perspectives on Knowledge Integration by : Thomas Lehmann
Download or read book International Perspectives on Knowledge Integration written by Thomas Lehmann and published by Brill. This book was released on 2020 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in knowledge integration grew considerably in recent years, particularly within the realm of pre-service teacher education. However, studies on the topic conceptualize knowledge integration in diverse ways. For example, it may be conceived as a specific coherence-building learning process which involves not only acquiring but interrelating knowledge of different types or from different domains, which together constitute a teacher?s or educational specialist?s professional knowledge base. Furthermore, knowledge integration also refers to the meaningful application of knowledge of different types and from various domains in order to act professionally and to teach successfully.0In many countries, however, future teachers and educational specialists often struggle with knowledge integration, because the task of integrating knowledge across domains, from various courses, and from practical training is left largely to the individuals. Thus, the efficacy and quality of higher education programs, particularly in pre-service teacher education, could be improved through careful attention to knowledge integration.00This book aims at facilitating the consideration of knowledge integration in teacher training and higher education in both research and practice. Specifically, it explores theoretical conceptions and methods, and reports on original research and good practices for fostering knowledge integration. It is thus of interest to researchers, faculty board members, and lecturers concerned with teacher training and higher education, as well as to student-teachers and students of pedagogy, education, and educational psychology.
Book Synopsis Teller of Tales by : Daniel Stashower
Download or read book Teller of Tales written by Daniel Stashower and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1999 Edgar Award for Best Biographical Work, this is "an excellent biography of the man who created Sherlock Holmes" (David Walton, The New York Times Book Review) This fresh, compelling biography examines the extraordinary life and strange contrasts of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the struggling provincial doctor who became the most popular storyteller of his age. From his youthful exploits aboard a whaling ship to his often stormy friendships with such figures as Harry Houdini and George Bernard Shaw, Conan Doyle lived a life as gripping as one of his adventures. Exhaustively researched and elegantly written, Daniel Stashower's Teller of Tales sets aside many myths and misconceptions to present a vivid portrait of the man behind the legend of Baker Street, with a particular emphasis on the Psychic Crusade that dominated his final years--the work that Conan Doyle himself felt to be "the most important thing in the world."

Download or read book Homogeneous Gold Catalysis written by LeGrande M. Slaughter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in modern chemical research. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field. Review articles for the individual volumes are invited by the volume editors. Readership: research chemists at universities or in industry, graduate students.

This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its ?rst ten years of activities (2000-2009), the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) played a leading role in stimulating investigation and research in a wide range of key areas in the information retrieval domain, such as cro- language question answering, image and geographic information retrieval, int- activeretrieval, and many more.It also promotedthe study andimplementation of appropriateevaluation methodologies for these diverse types of tasks and - dia. As a result, CLEF has been extremely successful in building a wide, strong, and multidisciplinary research community, which covers and spans the di?erent areasofexpertiseneededto dealwith thespreadofCLEFtracksandtasks. This constantly growing and almost completely voluntary community has dedicated an incredible amount of e?ort to making CLEF happen and is at the core of the CLEF achievements. CLEF 2010 represented a radical innovation of the “classic CLEF” format and an experiment aimed at understanding how “next generation” evaluation campaigns might be structured. We had to face the problem of how to innovate CLEFwhile still preservingits traditionalcorebusiness, namely the benchma- ing activities carried out in the various tracks and tasks. The consensus, after lively and community-wide discussions, was to make CLEF an independent four-day event, no longer organized in conjunction with the European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries (ECDL) where CLEF has been running as a two-and-a-half-day wo- shop. CLEF 2010 thus consisted of two main parts: a peer-reviewed conference – the ?rst two days – and a series of laboratories and workshops – the second two days.
Book Synopsis The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier by : Arthur Conan Doyle
Download or read book The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Dodd comes to Sherlock Holmes about the whereabouts of his friend Godfrey Emsworth. The two men fought in the Second Boer War together, where Ensworth was wounded. Dodd has not heard from his friend since then and believes something is very wrong. He has contacted Emsworth’s father, Colonel Ensworth, but the later tells him his son has gone off at sea. Not satisfied by this response Dodd went off to visit the colonel and his wife, who he found to be less than welcoming. Questioning the butler only made Dodd even less at ease and he hopes that Holmes will be able to track Emsworth down. "The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" (1926) is part of "The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes". Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After his studies, he worked as a ship’s surgeon on various boats. During the Second Boer War, he was an army doctor in South Africa. When he came back to the United Kingdom, he opened his own practice and started writing crime books. He is best known for his thrilling stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He published four novels and more than 50 short-stories starring the detective and Dr Watson, and they play an important role in the history of crime fiction. Other than the Sherlock Holmes series, Doyle wrote around thirty more books, in genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, historical novels, but also poetry, plays, and non-fiction.
