The two men fought in the Second Boer War together, where Ensworth was wounded. Dodd has not heard from his friend since then and believes something is very wrong. He has contacted Emsworth’s father, Colonel Ensworth, but the later tells him his son has gone off at sea. Not satisfied by this response Dodd went off to visit the colonel and his wife, who he found to be less than welcoming. Questioning the butler only made Dodd even less at ease and he hopes that Holmes will be able to track Emsworth down. "The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" (1926) is part of "The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes". Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After his studies, he worked as a ship’s surgeon on various boats. During the Second Boer War, he was an army doctor in South Africa. When he came back to the United Kingdom, he opened his own practice and started writing crime books. He is best known for his thrilling stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He published four novels and more than 50 short-stories starring the detective and Dr Watson, and they play an important role in the history of crime fiction. Other than the Sherlock Holmes series, Doyle wrote around thirty more books, in genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, historical novels, but also poetry, plays, and non-fiction.

For a long time he has worried me to write an experience of my own. Perhaps I have rather invited this persecution, since I have often had occasion to point out to him how superficial are his own accounts and to accuse him of pandering to popular taste instead of confining himself rigidly to facts and figures. "Try it yourself, Holmes!" he has retorted, and I am compelled to admit that, having taken my pen in my hand, I do begin to realize that the matter must be presented in such a way as may interest the reader.

Compared with earlier collections these tales are darker, exploring such themes as treachery, mutilation and the terrible consequences of infidelity, and containing such gothic touches as a blood-sucking vampire and crypts at midnight. With an Afterword by David Stuart Davies, a Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund, and an authority on Sherlock Holmes. He has written the Afterwords for all the Collector's Library Holmes volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and career of Mr. Sherlock Holmes haves inspired the interest of many of the brightest intellects in the world. They have expended great efforts to penetrate beyond the glimpses afforded us in the 60 published adventures - to detect the real underlying character of "the best and the wisest man" Dr. Watson has ever known ("The Final Problem" by A. C. Doyle). To the hundreds of past and present day Sherlockians, Holmesians, Doyeleans, we owe a great deal of gratitude for helping to shred the veil which has been created to obfuscate the real character of our remarkable hero: from the sainted Christopher Morley and Vincent Starrett; to the renowned commentators Ronald A. Knox, William S. Baring-Gould, Edgar W. Smith, Sydney C. Roberts, Michael Harrison, Michael Hardwick, and many others too numerous to mention. Commentators have included bookmen, journalists and essayists, physicians, psychiatrists and pathologists, chemists, monsignors and vicars, barristers and solicitors, and automobile executives. All have brought their intelligence, unique perspectives, and, most of all, a very desperate need for knowledge to this quest, their labor of love. With great humility but stout heart, I feel highly motivated, even obligated, to attempt to add my voice to this ongoing effort. As a microbiologist, I hope to bring a different perspective to these studies. I am used to dealing with very minute objects that produce consequences much greater than their size would indicate. Is not this obsession with minutiae the perfect training and background for one who feels the need to participate in Sherlockian studies? I do hope that this makes me somewhat qualified to join in this important area of scholarly research.

Book excerpt: The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle - is the final set of twelve (out of a total of fifty-six) Sherlock Holmes short stories by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle first published in the Strand Magazine between October 1921 and April 1927. Title of collection: The first British edition of the collection, published by John Murray, and the first American edition, published by George H. Doran Co., were both published in June 1927. However, they had slightly different titles. The title of the British collection was The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (hyphenated "Case-Book"), whereas the title of the American edition was The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes ("Case Book" as two words). Further confusing the issue of the title, some later publishers released the collection under the title The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes ("Casebook" as a single word). Contents: The first edition of The Case-Book, published by John Murray in 1927, does not present the stories in the order in which they were published:[2] 1 The Adventure of the Illustrious Client 2 The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier 3 The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone 4 The Adventure of the Three Gables 5 The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire 6 The Adventure of the Three Garridebs 7 The Problem of Thor Bridge 8 The Adventure of the Creeping Man 9 The Adventure of the Lion's Mane 10 The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger 11 The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place 12 The Adventure of the Retired Colourman

In sixty essays, sixty Sherlockians make the case for each of the stories. Their arguments range from the playful to the academic, and are as varied as the authors themselves. As editor Christopher Redmond says, ""What they have written is compelling evidence that any one of the Sherlock Holmes stories can be the best; it’s all a matter of what the reader is looking for."" Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s tales range from Victorian horror, to jewel heists, to society scandals. As these authors show, there's a Sherlock Holmes adventure for every taste. This volume benefits the Beacon Society. No royalties from the sale of this volume will be paid to either the authors or the editor. Royalties earned will, with the cooperation of the publisher, be turned over in their entirety to the Beacon Society, a not-for-profit organization of Sherlockians with the purpose of introducing young people to Sherlock Holmes through classrooms and libraries."

This book was released on 2020-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes contains twelve stories written about the legendary consulting detective by his creator Arthur Conan Doyle. Like all the other Sherlock Holmes adventures, these stories were originally published in the Strand Magazine, in this case between October 1921 and April 1927. What sets the stories collected in the Case Book of Sherlock Holmes from all other anthologies is that that they represent the winding down of a literary sensation. These are the last original mysteries of Holmes to be published in the Strand and this is the last collection of original stories penned by Doyle.Although new editions sometimes reorder the stories, the order in which they appeared when The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes was originally published (in chronological ordering according to their serial publication date) is as follows: "The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" (1921)"The Problem of Thor Bridge" (1922)"The Adventure of the Creeping Man" (1923)"The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Garridebs" (1924)"The Adventure of the Illustrious Client" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Gables" (1926)"The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" (1926)"The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" (1926)"The Adventure of the Retired Colourman" (1926)"The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger" (1927)"The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" (1927)Some of the selections that that appear in The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes are the only remaining original Holmes stories written by Doyle that are not in the public domain. More will be added according to copyright law expiration dates until the year 2023, at which point all of the Holmes adventures will officially be considered public domain.
