Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the managerial roles and organizational status of the chief business officer in North Carolina community colleges, with the intended purpose of better understanding how the roles are performed. This study is conceptually framed with the managerial role theory of Baker, which was based on the work of Mintzberg. As a qualitative research study, interviews developed through the constant comparison method were conducted with six community college chief business officers (CBOs) in North Carolina, based on the following research questions: 1. How do CBOs perceive their managerial roles? 2. How do the perceptions of the CBOs correspond to the perceptions of the president and chief academic officer in their respective college? 3. How do CBOs perceive their place and status in their college? 4. How do the CBOs feel their roles and place in their college have changed over the course of their tenure in the position? The study's results, triangulated through document analysis and interviews with the CBOs' respective presidents and chief academic officers, show the perceived roles the CBOs performed and their status in their colleges. Labels for the roles were initially based on Baker's model and modified by the descriptions of the CBOs, who saw their roles as divisional or institutional, with a hierarchy of roles in each category and sub-categories of peripheral roles, variable roles, and core roles. Resource manager, liaison, problem solver, monitor and information clearinghouse were identified as core to both the divisional and institutional roles, with negotiator, visionary, ambassador, and advocate seen as peripheral roles, while the CBO was not found to be an agent of institutional change. Experience and longevity were identified as factors that positively affected the CBO's status, while also increasing the importance of the advisor role. Community colleges are facing continuous enrollment declines, have fewer financial resources to draw upon, and are under an increasing amount of external pressure, leaving senior leaders with a new set of challenges. Simultaneously, women are moving into the role of the community college CAO at a faster pace than their counterparts at four-year institutions. The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological analysis was to examine the leadership experiences of women chief academic officers at community colleges within the State University of New York (SUNY) system. SUNY's 30 community colleges make up nearly half of its 64 campuses. Eight women, currently serving as a community college CAO, participated in this study through a semi-structured interview and were asked to describe their leadership experiences as a CAO. The Synergistic Leadership Theory served as the theoretical framework through which to view the participants' responses. This study found that the role of the community college CAO, with respect to the women who serve in it, is evolving and increasing in its responsibilities, identified essential skills needed by today's CAOs, indicated that the participant's viewed their gender as a challenge, discovered there is no CAO role-specific training, and noted the majority of these women are not pursuing a college presidency. Recommendations center on the need for: additional preparation for the role of CAO, an increase in national awareness about the current literature and trends on this population of leaders, further development of opportunities to support a transition to a college presidency, and updated curriculum within doctoral coursework and programs, particularly those aligned with community college leadership"--Author's abstract.

It examined (a) experience candidates brought to the position; (b) job duties and responsibilities; (c) knowledge, skills, and abilities required; (d) challenges and barriers; (d) support systems; and (e) advice CAOs offer to others who aspire to the role. Five key areas of competency, identified as critical to successful performance, include competency in interpersonal dynamics, managerial operations, instruction and instructional design, capacity development, and collaborative leadership. These five areas provide the basis for a new leadership model, which is structured as an inverted pyramid with interpersonal dynamics, the most significant competency, at its apex. The model can be incorporated into a performance paradigm to demonstrate how CAO performance is affected by intervening factors and linked to the success of the college and its students. The model and paradigm confirm that the CAO is pivotal to the quality of instruction and the success of students and the college. The data reveal that CAOs tend to see themselves as facilitators and define their own success in terms of the successes of others. A major challenge is trying to balance their demanding jobs with their personal lives. Other challenges include dealing with declining state revenues, budget deficits, the state's funding formula for community colleges, changing technologies, and high employee-turnover rates. CAOs tend to rely upon each other and their networks for support and assistance, and they note that having a mentor is critical to advancing up the ladder of academe. Most accepted the CAO job to "make a difference" in the lives of students and the quality of instruction offered by their institutions. Their greatest reward lies in witnessing the success of students, faculty, staff, colleagues, and their institutions. Most had served in their positions longer than the national average, and most planned to remain in their instructional leadership roles. Only one aspired to a presidency, which is significant because CAOs constitute the most likely pool of candidates for the presidency.
