Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of a CanadianTo-day) and can vouch for the absolute truthfulness of the stories; also, that the people, places, and incidents are faithfully described and that the conditions of life then existing in the different parts of Canada, as por trayed by me in the pages of this book, were absolutely true at the time. I have written The Making of a Canadian at the urgent request of many of my most respected and honored friends, consisting of ministers of the gospel, lawyers, doctors, business men, and a prominent author. I was traveling through Louisiana, Texas, and other Southern states some time ago, and this particular author was my traveling companion. He had traveled extensively in all parts of the world. As my wanderings had carried me over a good part of Europe, as well as the United States and Canada, naturally our conversation drifted into reminiscences of personal experiences in our travels, and of course we had a great many to relate. After an absence of several months we returned to New York, and as we were saying good-bye he said: My dear boy, if I had at my disposal one-half of the interesting reminiscences of travel which you have related to me, I would most certainly group them together and make a book which would not only be interesting and instructive to young people, but highly entertaining to all who read it. Write it by all means. Many others have said the same thing, if not in the same words yet in substance the meaning was the same. Therefore I have written this book of stories, entitled The Making of a Cana dian, which is a truthful recital of the life and adven tures of Jack Arling, the hero of the book. I will feel.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of Canadian Literature The boy was an omnivorous reader, readily absorbing the contents of every piece of printed matter on which he could lay his hands. As his parents belonged to the Free Church of Scotland, they objected to his reading of pro fane books, and tried to confine his reading to the Bible, Pilgrim's Progress, books of sermons and similar works. Family worship was conducted three times a day, and each time a chapter of the Bible was read in Gaelic, so the lad got a thorough grounding in the Scriptures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making Good: A Story of Northwest Canada Jack Young stood contemplating the sailing schooner Jersey as it lay in dock at Bristol. The name appealed to him, for Jersey had been his home for the sixteen years of his life. He had not run away from home; the old homestead had been sold a few weeks ago on the death of his father, and his mother had gone to make her home with an older brother, so Jack, with an inborn love of the sea, had decided to seek adventure and a living on its wide, rolling spaces. He walked over to the Jersey and found it agog with life - it was going out on the tide that night. Presently the huge figure of a man came down the gangway, and as he stepped on to the dock Jack walked over to him. "Excuse me, sir," he said, "but is there any chance of a job on your boat?" The man stopped, turned suddenly, and stood looking down at Jack for several seconds, then slowly removed his pipe from his mouth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Canadian Literature (English) Frequently I heard the statement made by men who ought to know, that Canada had no literature of its own, and in order to supply this deficiency of our intellectual life we had to depend upon the literary talent of Britain and that of our neighbors to the south of us. But in coming into Canada has the British race lost its ambitions and mental vigor? If so, why? The assertion is not true obviously with regard to the subduing of the forest and the cultivating of the virgin soil of this rich and vast country. Of a happy temperament gener ally, though some had a sad and gloomy countenance. Physically they were well proportioned. Some of the men and women had fine figures, strong and robust, and many of the women were powerful and of unusual height. The greater portion of the work fell to the lot of the women, who looked after the housework, tilled the land, laid up a store Of wood for the winter, beat the hemp and spun it, and made fishing nets from the thread. They also gathered in the harvest and prepared it for food. The occupation of the men was hunting for deer, fishing, and building their cabins, varied at times by war. When they were free from these occupations, they visited other tribes with whom they were acquainted for the purpose of traffic or exchange, and their return was celebrated by dances and festivities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making Good in Canada This conversation took place between a raw-boned, attenuated Eastern Canadian and myself while killing time on the platform of Englehart Station, way up in Northern Ontario, Where trains are few and far between, and where the sights of the neighbourhood may be ah sorbed in five minutes. My interrogator carried his sole few belongings in a small grip, and he had a roll of dollar bills tucked in his belt. I had returned from the Porcupine Gold Country, which just then was looming large in the eyes of the for tune-hunters. From the Britisher's point of View the prospect for human activity was about as inviting as it is in a casual ward. My pessimism amused the stranger. He had roughed it hard down among the cities, and had failed to find the hole in which his efforts would fit, so had made a big move in another direction. He had not spent money on railway fares for nothing. However dismal the outlook might be, he was ready to turn his hand to anything. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadians of Old Much elated with this discovery, and congratulating myself that I had more brains than the unhappy eleven of whom my friend had spoken, I hurry to my library, I furnish myself, perhaps all too appropriately, with a ream of the paper called foolscap, and I set myself to work. I write for my own amusement, at the risk of weary ing the reader who may have the patience to go through this volume. But, as Nature has made me compassionate, I will give this dear reader a little good advice. He had better throw away the unlucky book without taking the trouble to criticise it, which would be making it much too important, and would be, moreover, but wasted labor for the serious critic; for, unlike that Old Archbishop of Granada, so touchy on the subject of his sermons, of whom Gil Blas has told us, I am, for my part, blessed with an easy humor, and, instead of retorting to my critic I wish you good luck and very much better taste, I will frankly admit that my book has a thousand faults, of most of which I have a lively consciousness.
