Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1712, English naturalist Mark Catesby (1683–1749) crossed the Atlantic to Virginia. After a seven-year stay, he returned to England with paintings of plants and animals he had studied. They sufficiently impressed other naturalists that in 1722 several Fellows of the Royal Society sponsored his return to North America. There Catesby cataloged the flora and fauna of the Carolinas and the Bahamas by gathering seeds and specimens, compiling notes, and making watercolor sketches. Going home to England after five years, he began the twenty-year task of writing, etching, and publishing his monumental The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Mark Catesby was a man of exceptional courage and determination combined with insatiable curiosity and multiple talents. Nevertheless no portrait of him is known. The international contributors to this volume review Catesby’s biography alongside the historical and scientific significance of his work. Ultimately, this lavishly illustrated volume advances knowledge of Catesby’s explorations, collections, artwork, and publications in order to reassess his importance within the pantheon of early naturalists.

Book excerpt: Edward O. Wilson -- University Professor at Harvard, winner of two Pulitzer prizes, eloquent champion of biodiversity -- is arguably one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century. His career represents both a blueprint and a challenge to those who seek to explore the frontiers of scientific understanding. Yet, until now, little has been told of his life and of the important events that have shaped his thought. In Naturalist, Wilson describes for the first time both his growth as a scientist and the evolution of the science he has helped define. He traces the trajectory of his life -- from a childhood spent exploring the Gulf Coast of Alabama and Florida to life as a tenured professor at Harvard -- detailing how his youthful fascination with nature blossomed into a lifelong calling. He recounts with drama and wit the adventures of his days as a student at the University of Alabama and his four decades at Harvard University, where he has achieved renown as both teacher and researcher. As the narrative of Wilson's life unfolds, the reader is treated to an inside look at the origin and development of ideas that guide today's biological research. Theories that are now widely accepted in the scientific world were once untested hypotheses emerging from one mans's broad-gauged studies. Throughout Naturalist, we see Wilson's mind and energies constantly striving to help establish many of the central principles of the field of evolutionary biology. The story of Wilson's life provides fascinating insights into the making of a scientist, and a valuable look at some of the most thought-provoking ideas of our time.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Naturalist, 1880, Vol. 14: An Illustrated Magazine of Natural History Sometimes they could be found so situated during the day time, and now and then both by day and night, but rarely in the day time, one or more Of them could be seen protruding part way from the sand, and looking as if planted in this position, but a tap or a motion of the vessel would cause them to withdraw from sight immediately. These actions would seem to indicate what is probably a fact. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Naturalist, 1906, Vol. 40: An Illustrated Magazine of Natural History It is so rapid that it is not easily recognized at any great distance until experience has sharpened the eye. Therein lies, I think, the cause of the birth Of the aeroplane theory, though I must add that experience need not necessarily sharpen even good natural sight into being able to see the wing-movement. Knack or chance may come in in such matters. Some time ago, for instance, I was astonished, whilst testing the shooting of a shot-and-ball gun at the butts, to find that in certain lights I could plainly see the ball during its whole flight, whilst the attendant whose daily busi ness it was to test rifles and guns, and whose sight was far supe rior to mine, tried over and over again but could not pick it up. So have I seen many watch the whirring wings and declare them to be still. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
