Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a Symposium on Complex Analysis, held at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in June 1991 on the occasion of the retirement of Walter Rudin. During the week of the conference, a group of about two hundred mathematicians from many nations gathered to discuss recent developments in complex analysis and to celebrate Rudin's long and productive career. Among the main subjects covered are applications of complex analysis to operator theory, polynomial convexity, holomorphic mappings, boundary behaviour of holomorphic functions, function theory on the unit disk and ball, and some aspects of the theory of partial differential equations related to complex analysis. Containing papers by some of the world's leading experts in these subjects, this book reports on current directions in complex analysis and presents an excellent mixture of the analytic and geometric aspects of the theory.

Book excerpt: The fifteen articles composing this volume focus on recent developments in complex analysis. Written by well-known researchers in complex analysis and related fields, they cover a wide spectrum of research using the methods of partial differential equations as well as differential and algebraic geometry. The topics include invariants of manifolds, the complex Neumann problem, complex dynamics, Ricci flows, the Abel-Radon transforms, the action of the Ricci curvature operator, locally symmetric manifolds, the maximum principle, very ampleness criterion, integrability of elliptic systems, and contact geometry. Among the contributions are survey articles, which are especially suitable for readers looking for a comprehensive, well-presented introduction to the most recent important developments in the field. The contributors are R. Bott, M. Christ, J. P. D'Angelo, P. Eyssidieux, C. Fefferman, J. E. Fornaess, H. Grauert, R. S. Hamilton, G. M. Henkin, N. Mok, A. M. Nadel, L. Nirenberg, N. Sibony, Y.-T. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of papers reflecting the conference held in Nahariya, Israel in honor of Professor Lawrence Zalcman's sixtieth birthday. The papers, many written by leading authorities, range widely over classical complex analysis of one and several variables, differential equations, and integral geometry. Topics covered include, but are not limited to, these areas within the theory of functions of one complex variable: complex dynamics, elliptic functions, Kleinian groups, quasiconformal mappings, Tauberian theorems, univalent functions, and value distribution theory. Altogether, the papers in this volume provide a comprehensive overview of activity in complex analysis at the beginning of the twenty-first century and testify to the continuing vitality of the interplay between classical and modern analysis. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in computer analysis and differential geometry. Information for our distributors: This book is co-published with Bar-Ilan University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains nearly all the papers presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Biofluiddynamics, held in July 1991, at the University of Washington, Seattle. The lead paper, by Sir James Lighthill, presents a comprehensive review of external flows in biology. The other papers on external and internal flows illuminate developments in the protean field of biofluiddynamics from diverse viewpoints, reflecting the field's multidisciplinary nature. For this reason, the work should be useful to mathematicians, biologists, engineers, physiologists, cardiologists and oceanographers alike. The papers highlight a number of problems that have remained largely unexplored due to the difficulty of addressing biological flow motions, which are often governed by large systems of nonlinear differential equations and involve complex geometries. However, recent advances in computational fluid dynamics have expanded opportunities to solve such problems. These developments have increased interest in areas such as the mechanisms of blood and air flow in humans, the dynamic ecology of the oceans, animal swimming and flight, to name a few.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection contains papers conceptually related to the classical ideas of Sophus Lie (i.e., to Lie groups and Lie algebras). Obviously, it is impos sible to embrace all such topics in a book of reasonable size. The contents of this one reflect the scientific interests of those authors whose activities, to some extent at least, are associated with the International Sophus Lie Center. We have divided the book into five parts in accordance with the basic topics of the papers (although it can be easily seen that some of them may be attributed to several parts simultaneously). The first part (quantum mathematics) combines the papers related to the methods generated by the concepts of quantization and quantum group. The second part is devoted to the theory of hypergroups and Lie hypergroups, which is one of the most important generalizations of the classical concept of locally compact group and of Lie group. A natural harmonic analysis arises on hypergroups, while any abstract transformation of Fourier type is gen erated by some hypergroup (commutative or not). Part III contains papers on the geometry of homogeneous spaces, Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras. Classical problems of the representation theory for Lie groups, as well as for topological groups and semigroups, are discussed in the papers of Part IV. Finally, the last part of the collection relates to applications of the ideas of Sophus Lie to differential equations.

Book excerpt: This book is the first set of proceedings to be devoted entirely to the theory of hypergeometric functions defined on domains of positivity. Most of the scientific areas in which these functions are applied include analytic number theory, combinatorics, harmonic analysis, random walks, representation theory, and mathematical physics - are represented here. This volume is based largely on lectures presented at a Special Session at the AMS meeting in Tampa, Florida in March 1991, which was devoted to hypergeometric functions of matrix argument and to fostering communication among representatives of the diverse scientific areas in which these functions are utilized. Accessible to graduate students and others seeking an introduction to the state of the art in this area, this book is a suitable text for advanced graduate seminar courses for it contains many open problems.

Book excerpt: This volume attests to the far-reaching influence of Kazhdan-Lusztig theory on several areas of mathematics by presenting a diverse set of research articles centered on this theme. Although there has been a great deal of work in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, this book is perhaps the first to discuss all aspects of the theory and gives readers a flavor of the range of topics involved. The articles present recent work in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, including representations of Kac-Moody Lie algebras, geometry of Schubert varieties, intersection cohomology of stratified spaces, and some new topics such as quantum groups.
