Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers older and current knowledge of the evolution and functioning of cuesta landscapes to provide a better understanding of the Luxembourgian landscape. The geological variety and tectonic setting of the area provide excellent opportunities to study landscape development, hydrology, geomorphological processes, soil formation, forest vegetation and interrelationships between them, which are characteristic of larger parts of Europe. The book is organized around four themes. The first addresses the development of the Luxembourgian cuesta landscape, covering geological evolution, lithology, geomorphological characteristics and hydrology, as well as the scientific history of research in this area. The second theme addresses aspects of the landscape’s geo-ecological- system functioning and development, including soils, nutrient availability, forest ecology and educational approaches to study geo-ecological systems, including old and modern mapping techniques. The third theme is related to biological and physico-chemical control of erosion processes, including the impact of (macro-)fauna, vegetation and substrate on soil erosion processes. The last theme discusses practical applications of the research findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an informative and intriguing overview of the most scenic landscapes of Belgium and Luxembourg. Geodiversity is emphasized, for example the periglacial features in the Hautes Fagnes area, the planation surfaces in the Ardennes and Oesling, and the famous caves of Han/Lesse and Remouchamps. The book’s chief goals are to provide the reader with enjoyable and informative descriptions of the selected sites within their regional geographical and geological settings; to offer an up-to-date survey of the evolution of Belgium’s and Luxembourg’s landscape; and to share additional information on the cultural value of the respective sites wherever appropriate. The book is a richly illustrated reference work that makes accessible for the first time a wealth of information currently scattered among many national and regional journals. It will benefit earth scientists, environmental scientists, tourism geographers and conservationists alike.

Book excerpt: Reading the Soil Archives: Unraveling the Geoecological Code of Palaeosols and Sediment Cores, Volume 19, provides details of new techniques for understanding geological history in the form of quantitative pollen analyses, soil micromorphology, OSL (Optically Stimulated Luminescence) dating, phytolith analysis and biomarker analysis. The book presents the genesis of a cultural landscape, based on multi-proxy analysis of paleosoils and integration of geomorphological, pedological and archaeological research results, which can be a model for geoecological landscape studies. Beginning with analytical methods for interpreting soil archives, the book examines methods for reconstructing the landscape genesis. The book presents strengths and weaknesses of applications, especially in relation to the data from case studies in the Netherlands. The final chapter of the book addresses landscape evolution in different cultural periods. This book offers an integrated approach to geoecological knowledge that is valuable to students and professionals in quaternary science, physical geography, soil science, archaeology, historical geography, and land planning and restructuring. Covers techniques including soil pollen analysis, radiocarbon dating, OSL-dating, phytolith analysis, biomarker analysis, archaeological analysis and GIS Provides a case study of results applied in the reconstruction of landscape evolution of SE-Netherlands Includes color illustrations, such as microscopic pictures, pictures of landscapes and soil profiles, pollen diagrams and dating graph

Book excerpt: This new, fully updated fourth edition of Bradt's Luxembourg remains the only comprehensive English-language guide to focus exclusively on this small but fascinating European country. Included are detailed reviews of the best places to stay and eat in all price categories, from luxury to budget; information about every museum and significant place of interest in the country; in-depth guides to local food, drink, language and culture; and guides to the best cycling and hiking trails, many of the latter having been personally tested and explored by the author. New for this edition are details of all the latest developments, including infrastructure improvements in Luxembourg City, the development of the spectacular glass-walled Pfaffenthal lift and the area of Pfaffenthal itself, new tram services and the new inclined railway linking Pfaffenthal with Kirchberg. Also covered are the new visitor centre at Haff Réimich nature reserve, as well as details of the most popular sites such as Vianden, Bock and Pétrusse casemates and Luxembourg City's MUDAM (Museum of Modern Art). Military history is also included, notably the sights of the Battle of the Ardennes and Hamm American Military Cemetery, burial place of General Patton. This diminutive European state punches above its weight and is celebrated for everything from its early pioneering of commercial broadcasting with Radio Luxembourg to the fact that it has won the Eurovision song contest five times and no fewer than four Luxembourg riders have won the Tour de France. A foodie paradise, the country offers its own unique cuisine - a fusion of French and German influences - and 'possibly' the densest collection of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world (12 restaurants with 13 stars). Short distances and easy travelling (public transport or driving) mean a lot can be covered on a relatively quick visit, from a proliferation of medieval castles to plentiful opportunities for outdoors enthusiasts: hiking and cycling abound in the Ardennes and Little Switzerland, including long-distance international walking trails linking with the Belgian Ardennes and German Eifel. Bradt's Luxembourg covers all this and more and provides all the information you need for a successful visit.
