We the authors are both descendants of this family, who were the 3rd largest of 500 free families in the Upper South during slavery. Feel as if you are with each character as they live, breathe, love and, most of all, survive to have thousands of descendants alive today.

Book excerpt: The saga of the precipitous rise and ultimate fall of the Jonathan Lucas family's rice-mill dynasty In the 1780s Jonathan Lucas, on a journey from his native England, shipwrecked near the Santee Delta of South Carolina, about forty miles north of Charleston. Lucas, the son of English mill owners and builders, found himself, fortuitously, near vast acres of swamp and marshland devoted to rice cultivation. When the labor-intensive milling process could not keep pace with high crop yields, Lucas was asked by planters to build a machine to speed the process. In 1787 he introduced the first highly successful water-pounding rice mill--creating the foundation of an international rice mill dynasty. In Rice to Ruin, Roy Williams III and Alexander Lucas Lofton recount the saga of the precipitous rise and ultimate fall of that empire. Lucas's invention did for rice, South Carolina's first great agricultural staple, what Eli Whitney did for cotton with his cotton gin. With his sons Jonathan Lucas II and William Lucas, Lucas built rice mills throughout the lowcountry. Eventually the rice kingdom extended to India, Egypt, and Europe after the younger Jonathan Lucas moved to London to be at the center of the international rice trade. Their lives were grand until the American Civil War and its aftermath. The end of slave labor changed the family's fortunes. The capital tied up in slaves evaporated; the plantations and town houses had to be sold off one by one; and the rice fields once described as "the gold mines of South Carolina" often failed or were no longer planted. Disease and debt took its toll on the Lucas clan, and, in the decades that followed, efforts to regain the lost fortune proved futile. In the end the once-glorious Carolina gold rice fields that had brought riches left the family in ruin.

Book excerpt: As the only son of a wealthy mill owner in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England, Jonathan Lucas is destined to become a millwright and a mill owner in northeast England like his father John Lucas. He lives a protected life behind the walls of his father's reputation and business success. The challenges of coming of age in the 1760's are soon approached by the young Jonathan as he enters an apprenticeship with his Uncle William Lucas. He travels to Manchester, which is far away from his mother and father's loving care. He encounters many adventures as he learns and loves his way toward adulthood and hopefully, a successful career of his own. Jonathan must choose between two beautiful girls that enter his life in a most memorable way. One is the epitome of beauty, grace and refinement. She is the lady that most women aspired to become in eighteenth century Great Britain. The other is a fiery, auburn-headed beauty that stirs passions deep within the men who meet her. Her family's background gives his parents pause concerning this most desirable woman. The decision is not an easy one, but one that has to be made, ... sooner or later. The American Revolution profoundly affects the fortunes of Jonathan's family, as well as all businessmen in Britain, America and most of the trading nations of the world. It prematurely ends the apprenticeship that he was serving with his father's brother William. It also brings a threat from an old friend of the family that is most unexpected and unwelcomed. Returning to Whitehaven, Jonathan takes a wife and starts a family of his own. Tragedy strikes and changes the course of his life. Thrust into a new role as a father and head of his own household, Jonathan continues to be confronted with difficulties, in both his business and personal life. He is offered an opportunity that would not only change his future, but change the world. Life, love, and destiny are put to the test as Jonathan comes face to face with what could be catastrophe or incredible fame and fortune. This story is the first in a series of books that will follow this important genius and his descendants as they move from Merry Old England to The Low Country of Antebellum South Carolina, to become "The Rice Kings. Follow Jonathan as the abrupt changes of his world throw everything he knows into turmoil. Check out the website: davidhenrylucasbooks.com

It offers a clear and honest look at what happens when an illness throws life off track, and how a combination of science, love, and serendipity can help put things right. At the age of thirty-four, Betsy Lucas was diagnosed with late-stage leukemia. Without treatment she had only months to live. At the time her daughters were ten months old and three years old. Together, Betsy and her husband, Brian, started a journey through chemo, radiation, and a bone marrow transplant. The path was far from steady, but with the help of countless supporters and a generous young man in Germany, they put one foot in front of the other, crossing days, months, and years off the calendar on the way to being cured. Here Comes the Sun isn't a cancer story-it's a love story.

Book excerpt: This book is a product of 2020, the year we all truly understood the importance of families to our lives, and how we are all connected to the world.Mattia's Nonna inspired me to write this book: Assunta is a very genuine and funny woman who loves to cook, and she shares whatever she knows without a filter and without hiding anything. There are many people like Assunta throughout Italy, carrying priceless generational knowledge of food and cooking, and as I researched this book, these families shared their recipes and kitchen secrets with me. You will see their names and sometimes pictures of these families throughout the book. The result is one of the most authentic cookbooks you will find. It's not just one of the best home cooking collections ever documented, but a collection of family recipes and secrets from people just like you and me: Nonnas, mammas, and regular people with a love of food and cooking. This book continues the journey I started in my previous book, Cooking With Lucas, which features 76 recipes based on my own education and experience. This book features all-new recipes, with no duplication from Cooking With Lucas, so you can feel confident that the two books together will give you a deep, wide and thorough understanding of traditional Italian home cooking.I have tried to make simple and accessible, and to create a cookbook that transports you into the very heart of the Italian home. From our families to yours, buon appetito!
