Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love-Letters of the King: Or the Life Romantic Late one spring afternoon, quite recently, a hansom, almost intolerably radiant with happiness - so it seemed to other hansoms going east - was driving through St. James's Park in the direction of Buckingham Palace. It contained two people, a man and a woman, not too young and not too old, and it was from them that the effulgence proceeded. "Let us make life wonderful for each other," the man was saying. "You have already made it wonderful for me," the woman answered. Thus they completed the second hour of their acquaintance. They were in all the exaltation of first love experienced for the twentieth time. Sudden love had come upon them while they were drinking tea at Mrs. Lanyon's that very afternoon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Love-Letters and Other Stories Yes, they were chattering about you, especially around the table where some solid ladies of Chicago served iced drinks. I was sipping it all in with the punch, and looking at the pinks above the dark hair, and won dering if you found having your own way as good fun as when you were eighteen You have gained, my dear lady, while I have been knocking about the world. You are now more than sweet you are almost hand some. I suppose it is a question of lights and the time of day whether or not you are really brilliant. And you carry surety in your face. There is nothing in Chicago to startle you, perhaps not in the world. She at the punch remarked, casually, to her of the sherbet I wonder when Miss Armstrong will settle matters with Lane? It is the best she can do now, though he isn't as well worth while as the men she threw over. And her neighbor replied She might do worse than Lane. She could get more from him than the showy ones. So Lane is the name of the day. T hey have gauged you and put you down at Lane. I took an ice and waited - but you will have to supply the details. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lauriel the Love Letters of an American Girl Girls, like flowers, are unconscious flirts. And, like the flowers, they may be innocent in their desire to please. Were it not for the madness for gauds, the fashion of low-cut dresses and the whirl for social recognition, - each a desperate necessity of rivalry, - our women would not be moulting their illusions with their youth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Englishwoman's Love-Letters It was a necessary condition to the present publication that the authorship of these letters should remain unstated. Those who know will keep silence: those who do not, will not find here any data likely to guide them to the truth. The story which darkens these pages cannot be more fully indicated while the feelings of some who are still living have to be consulted: nor will the reader find the root of the tragedy explained in the letters themselves. But one thing at least may be said as regards the principal actors - that to the memory of neither of them does any blame belong. They were equally the victims of circumstances, which came whole out of the hands of fate and remained, so far as one of the two was concerned, a mystery to the day of her death. Oh, that dear goat. I could dash out there acrost the lots, jump the dump and cast my arms around his silky neck, then I could gaze into his dreamy blinkers and kiss him, oh, a thousand times. Why? Book excerpt: A collection of love letters written by Hall to Evguenia Souline from 1934 to 1942 offering insights into the artistic and political ideas of the 20th century's most famous lesbian novelist. The letters convey the obsessional love and betrayal of which good drama is made and which editor Glasgow argues was the cause of Hall's creative decline. Additionally, the letters supply important critical information about the author's views on her novel The Well of Loneliness (banned in 1928 by the British government), her ideas about politics, religion, and the literary scene. Book excerpt: To Have and to Hold (1899) is a novel by American author Mary Johnston. It was the bestselling novel in the United States in the following year (1900). To Have and to Hold is the story of an English soldier, Ralph Percy, turned Virginian explorer iIPn colonial Jamestown. Ralph buys a wife for himself - a girl named Jocelyn Leigh - little knowing that she is the escaping ward of King James I, fleeing a forced marriage to Lord Carnal. Jocelyn hardly loves Ralph - indeed, she seems to abhor him. Carnal, Jocelyn's husband-to-be, eventually comes to Jamestown, unaware that Ralph Percy and Jocelyn Leigh are man and wife. Lord Carnal attempts to kidnap Jocelyn several times and eventually follows Ralph, Jocelyn, and their two companions - Jeremy Sparrow, the Separatist minister, and Diccon, Ralph's servant - as they escape from the King's orders to arrest Ralph and carry Jocelyn back to England. The boat they are in, however, crashes on a desert island, but they are accosted by pirates, who, after a short struggle, agree to take Ralph as their captain, after he pretends to be the pirate "Kirby". The pirates gleefully play on with Ralph's masquerade, until he refuses to allow them to rape and pillage those aboard Spanish ships. The play is up when the pirates see an English ship off the coast of Florida. Ralph refuses to fire upon it, knowing it carries the new Virginian governor, Sir Francis Wyatt, but the pirates open fire, and Jeremy Sparrow, before the English ship can be destroyed, purposefully crashes the ship into a reef. The pirates are all killed, but the Englishmen (and woman) are rescued by the Governor's ship.
