Book excerpt: Have you heard the rumor around campus about the locker room?If you haven't, let me enlighten you: Legend has it if you bring a girl into the sacred after-game domain of the baseball locker room, it will end with a walk down the aisle. One rowdy and naked encounter against the lockers with the girl of your dreams will make her your wife. Translation: baseball players are stupidly superstitious and believe the locker room has magical powers. But not all baseball players are superstitious, me included. So when the girl I've fallen for brushes me off, I start to question if I need to switch my way of thinking. Maybe it's time I finally hand out a coveted invitation to the locker room. The only question is, will she accept?

In the season prior to his arrival in 2008, the Atlanta Falcons had a 4–12 record and the franchise had never before achieved back-to-back winning seasons. Under Smith’s leadership, the Falcons earned an 11–5 record in his first season and would go on to become perennial playoff and Super Bowl contenders earning Smith AP Coach of year in 2008 and voted Coach of Year by his peers in 2008, 2010 and 2012. You Win in the Locker Room First draws on the extraordinary experiences of Coach Mike Smith and Jon Gordon—consultant to numerous college and professional teams—to explore the seven powerful principles that any business, school, organization, or sports team can adopt to revitalize their organization. Step by step, the authors outline a strategy for building a thriving organization and provide a practical framework that give leaders the tools they need to create a great culture, lead with the right mindset, create strong relationships, improve teamwork, execute at a higher level, and avoid the pitfalls that sabotage far too many leaders and organizations. In addition to sharing what went right with the Falcons, Smith also transparently shares what went wrong his last two seasons and provides invaluable lessons leaders can take away from his victories, success, failures and mistakes. Whether it’s an executive leadership team of a Fortune 500 company, a sports team, an emergency room team, military team, or a school team successful leaders coach their team and develop, mentor, encourage, and guide them. This not only improves the team, it improves the leaders and their relationships, connections, and organization. Book excerpt: Walking off the court or field for the last time, whether you're a high school athlete or a professional, can be a traumatic experience. You go from a world where sports takes up most of your time and thoughts to a place where you are going to be assessed and measured on a set of skills you may not have developed yet. Yet the skills you developed as an athlete-perseverance, being a team player, showing up on time, putting on a game face-can get you through the process of figuring out a game plan for the rest of your life. This book isn't just for athletes, but for anyone going through any major transition, from being a stay-at-home parent headed back into the work force, to changing jobs or careers, to life changes like divorce or losing a parent. The principles presented here can guide you through all kinds of transition. Leonard Wheeler loved playing professional football, but he knew that his football career wouldn't last forever. He did all he could to prepare for the day when he could no longer play. Even so, when his career-ending injury happened, he struggled. After learning from his own mistakes, he developed winning techniques to help others find their path beyond the locker room. This book also features leadership and transition advice from a variety of NFL, NBA, WNBA executives and former players, including Dale Davis, Eugene Robinson, Charlotte Smith, Troy Vincent, Andre Collins, Tracy Perlman, Felicia Hall Allen, and Hardy Nickerson. Former NFL player Leonard Wheeler has been motivating athletes, executives, and major corporations around the world for fifteen years. He has served organizations including the NBA, Capital One, MasterCard, and the USO as a dynamic speaker and executive coach. He is an entrepreneur and an active Regional Director for the NFL.

Book excerpt: With few exceptions, churches across America are static or in decline. In an increasingly hostile postmodern culture, the church should be boldly proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ and shining like a star. Yet we are having no impact and we are increasingly considered irrelevant. Faithfully using scripture as a guide, Jeff S. Mann reminds us of our mission, calls us back to biblical basics, and challenges us to step out in faith to go beyond the walls of our churches in the love of Christ to deliver a message of hope. Believing there is still hope for the world, Mann writes to average church members in everyday language. God's plan for redemption is shown to be accomplished only through the incarnation and suffering of Christ and the fulfillment of the Great Commission. To bring glory to God and impact our world, Mann uses the Bible to help provide understanding as to who we are, why we are here, and how God tells us to operate. In other words, the church must become more like a locker room.

Book excerpt: The editors intended for this volume to provide queer and ally athletes a space to have a voice and share the experiences that have been significant in their identity as an athletic member of the LGBT+ community. To that end, this book is a collection of autobiographical short stories of LGBT+ athletes and their experiences in sports and athletics, some who are publicly out and some who are not. Based on the narratives collected, the book is organized around themes that illustrate various perspectives and the power that sport can play in 1) finding one’s true identity, 2) bridging communities, and 3) challenging gender norm stereotypes. The goal of this book is to help change the expectations of what it means to be a successful athlete and promote greater inclusivity of LGBT athletes. Providing the space for these voices to be heard will help to pave the way for a non?discriminating sporting environment, allow LGBT+ athletes to focus on their given sport without any distractions, and enable these athletes to live an authentic life without having to hide their true identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While sportswriters rushed into Major League Baseball locker rooms to talk with players, MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn barred the lone woman from entering along with them. That reporter, 26-year-old Sports Illustrated reporter Melissa Ludtke, charged Kuhn with gender discrimination, and after the lawyers argued Ludtke v. Kuhn in federal court, she won. Her 1978 groundbreaking case affirmed her equal rights, and the judge’s order opened the doors for several generations of women to be hired in sports media. Locker Room Talk is Ludtke’s gripping account of being at the core of this globally covered case that churned up ugly prejudices about the place of women in sports. Kuhn claimed that allowing women into locker rooms would violate his players’ “sexual privacy.” Late-night television comedy sketches mocked her as newspaper cartoonists portrayed her as a sexy, buxom looker who wanted to ogle the naked athletes’ bodies. She weaves these public perspectives throughout her vivid depiction of the court drama overseen by Judge Constance Baker Motley, the first Black woman to serve on the federal bench. She recounts how her lawyer, F.A.O. “Fritz” Schwarz employed an ingenious legal strategy that persuaded Judge Motley to invoke the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause in giving Ludtke access identical to her male counterparts. Locker Room Talk is both an inspiring story of one woman’s determination to do a job dominated by men and an illuminating portrait of a defining moment for women’s rights.

An anthropologist and a sociologist explore the underpinnings of school sports and examine the evidence to support the prevailing assumption that sport is an ennobling experience. They find that participation has little effect on positive character development. Far from building model citizens, their research shows that competitive team sports may foster selfish motives and antisocial behavior. Rather than learning self-sacrifice and dedication, athletes often pick up the message that "winning isn''t everything - it''s the only thing."
