Book Synopsis The Mind Object by : Edward G. Corrigan
Download or read book The Mind Object written by Edward G. Corrigan and published by Jason Aronson, Incorporated. This book was released on 1995-11-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Help People Who Have Only Their Minds to Love Can a person relate to his or her own mind as an object, depend upon it to the exclusion of other objects, idealize it, fear it, hate it? Can a person live out a life striving to attain the elusive power of the mind's perfection, yielding to its promise while sacrificing the body's truth? Winnicott was the first to describe how very early in life an individual can, in response to environmental failure, turn away from the body and its needs and establish "mental functioning as a thing in itself." Winnicott's elusive term, the mind-psyche, describes a subtle, yet fundamentally violent split in which the mind negates the role of the body, its feelings and functions, as the source of creative living. Later, Masud Khan elaborated on Winnicott's notions. This exciting book extends Winnicott's and Khan's ideas to introduce the concept of the mind object, a term that signifies the central dissociation of the mind separated from the body, as well as underscores its function. When the mind takes on a life of its own, it becomes an objectâseparate, as it were, from the self. And because it is an object that originates as a substitute for maternal care, it becomes an object of intense attachment, turned to for security, solace, and gratification. Having achieved the status of an independent object, the mind also can turn on the self, attacking, demeaning, and persecuting the individual. Once this object relationship is established, it organizes the self, providing an aura of omnipotence. However, this precocious, schizoid solution is an illusion, vulnerable to breakdown and its associated anxieties. Making a unique contribution, The Mind Object explores the dangers of knowing too muchâthe lure of the intellectâfor the patient as well as for the therapist. The authors illuminate the complex pathological consequences that result from precocious solutions.

Download or read book Hear No Evil written by Bethany Campbell and published by Loveswept. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bethany Campbell, the nationally bestselling author of See How They Run andDon't Talk to Strangers, returns with a chilling new novel of romantic suspense in the tradition of Joy Fielding and Mary Higgins Clark. Fittingly, it began with a phone call. Her grandmother had fallen. Her grandmother was in the hospital. Her grandmother needed Eden to come home and take care of business. Eden knew the deal. "Business" meant Grandma Jessie's phone line. Jessie was a phone psychic--and a darn good one at that. And Eden was the only one who could sound enough like Jessie so that her clientele would never know the difference. But as Eden fakes her way through tarot card and astrology readings, there is one caller unlike any other. The voice is breathless, female, terrified. The voice warns of explosions in distant places, of fire, of blood, of horror. The caller is in desperate danger because she knows things she shouldn't know, and won't be allowed to know much longer. And now Eden knows too....

Book excerpt: Pull up a lounge chair and have a cocktail at Sunset Beach â it comes with a twist. Drue Campbellâs life is adrift. Out of a job and down on her luck, life doesnât seem to be getting any better when her estranged father, Brice Campbell, a flamboyant personal injury attorney, shows up at her motherâs funeral after a twenty-year absence. Worse, heâs remarried â to Drueâs eighth grade frenemy, Wendy, now his office manager. And theyâre offering her a job. It seems like the job from hell, but the offer is sweetened by the news of her inheritance â her grandparentsâ beach bungalow in the sleepy town of Sunset Beach, a charming but storm-damaged eyesore now surrounded by waterfront McMansions. With no other prospects, Drue begrudgingly joins the firm, spending her days screening out the grifters whose phone calls flood the law office. Working with Wendy is no picnic either. But when a suspicious death at an exclusive beach resort nearby exposes possible corruption at her fatherâs firm, she goes from unwilling cubicle rat to unwitting investigator, and is drawn into a case that may â or may not â involve her father. With an office romance building, a decades-old missing persons case re-opened, and a cottage in rehab, one thing is for sure at Sunset Beach: thereâs a storm on the horizon. Sunset Beach is a compelling ride, full of Mary Kay Andrews' signature wit, heart, and charm.
