Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Louisiana Territory A large number of histories of the Louisiana Territory have been published within the past year, and several new ones are announced as shortly forthcoming. But no one has written a history of the literature of the Territory and the states and territories that have been carved out. Of Jefferson's great and wise purchase. Indeed, I do not believe that in our numerous reviews, magazines, literary journals and daily news papers, a single article has appeared on the subject. This book, is, therefore, a pioneer study. I have blazed the trail through old bookshops and public and private libraries from Minnesota to Louisiana, hunted in many a virgin field hitherto unexplored, and used the newspaper reporter's art of interviewing. I therefore do not hesitate to assert that a large amount of the data and the facts contained in this work, is placed before the reading public for the first time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Purchase: As It Was, and as It Is Little did either France or the United States dream, on that eventful last day of April, 1803, of all that lay in the sale by the one, and the purchase by the other, of the vast and unknown territory called Louisiana. But at the distance of a century one is able to gauge somewhat the event that at one bold business stroke doubled the area of the young republic; and made possi ble the founding of a dozen great and masterful states. Next to the winning of our national independence, the purchase of Louisiana had perhaps the largest influence in the development of our country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westward the Way: The Character and Development of the Louisiana Territory as Seen by Artists and Writers of the Nineteenth Century WE have lived long, but this is the noblest work of our lives. Robert Livingstone, American Minister to France thus ad dressed himself to James Monroe, special envoy of President Jefferson, the two statesmen having just purchased Louisiana on behalf of the United States. The place was Paris; the date, May 2, 1803. The follow ing year on March 9, Major Amos Stoddard of the United States Army crossed the Mississippi in a rowboat and the next day hoisted the Ameri can flag in St. Louis. This simple ceremony symbolized a political event that was to change the course of modern history. The United States had assumed final possession of its new domain, a vast area which doubled the size of the young Republic virtually overnight. This book, and the exhibition on which it is based, has been as sembled to honor the great event - that noblest work which took place one hundred and fifty years ago - the Louisiana Purchase. Cortez gave his would-be successor defeat with a blind eye, and incorporated the invading army in his own. The partial blindness of this representative Of royal authority seems to have characterized all colonizing Spaniards since, until the climax of total blindness was reached in 1800, through the profitless transfer to France of an empire larger than that of Charlemagne. For his early exploits in Cuba, the one-eyed hero, Narvaez, was made second governor of Florida, with authority ex tending definitely beyond the present state of Louisiana and indefinitely over all the forests, rivers, swamps and savages he could conquer. The Indians and alligators came Off victorious, and N arvaez perished miserably at the mouth Of the Mississippi in vessels that were not seaworthy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World Aspects of the Louisiana Purchase Argument by title is a very attractive form of fallacy. We therefore freely confess that it is rather a thesis we have to establish than a theme to unfold when we speak of the Louisi ana purchase as a decisive epoch of general history and of American history in particular. Moreover, there is a sense in which every moment throughout the comparatively short duration of recorded history is a decisive one; in the pursuit of that idea the verge between sound, solemn truth, and fanei ful fiction is but a razor edge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Louisiana Purchase: And Its First Explorer, Zebulon Montgomery Pike At the opening of the nineteenth century Europe was one vast military camp. Upon the crimson crest of revolution Napoleon had ridden into power. The destinies of France were placed in his hands; and he led the devoted nation where he willed. The ambitious Corsican aimed not alone to control the nations of the old world, but he dreamed as well of empire in the new land that lay beyond the western sea. The gateway to the interior of the American continent was guarded by a French city. Over two centuries before, French explorers had driven the prows of their adventurous ships upon the coast of Louisiana, and in her soil planted a mighty cross and to it nailed the arms of France. Until 1762 the Lilies of France guided the infant destinies of the forest empire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Louisiana and the Louisiana Purchase Isiana and the changes In its boundary during the 137 years between 1682, the date of La Salle's discovery, and 1819, the date of the purchase Of Florida, formed an interesting part of the exhibit of the General Land Office at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition held at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904. Differences of Opinion have prevailed as to the extent Of Louisiana as purchased from France. It is believed thatthese are due, first, to a misconception of the scope of La Salle's discovery and proclamation, and, second, to a misunderstanding of the real significance of the political acts of the United States, between 1803 and 1819, affecting that part of La Salle's Louisiana which extended along the Gulf coast east of the Mississippi River. It Is submitted, as to the former, that the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 did not include territory beyond the limits of the original Louisiana, and, as to the latter, that all Spanish doubts as to ownership were resolved and permanently settled by the political acts of the United States following the purchase from France, but antedating the purchase of Florida from Spain. It is believed, also, that a true picture of the extent and location of La Salle' s Louisiana Is shown upon map No. 1. This picture greatly assists one to understand the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the History of the Louisiana Purchase Etyz - Less than a half century has passed since Iowa was one grand landscape of flowers, interspersed with a mere selvage of forests, diversified with beautiful streams of water, occupied by roaming tribes of Indians, and the wild beasts from which they drew their suste nance. Today, Iowa is the granary of America, the very first in the rank of producers, growing a larger combined amount of the cereals than any other State in the Union, excepting only Illinois, which was admitted as a State in the Union, while Iowa was yet a compara tively unexplored wilderness.
