Book excerpt: The Lipid Research Clinics have the following main objectives: to evaluate current techniques for diagnosis of hyperlipoproteinemia; to acquire data across all age groups on the prevalence of different types of hyperlipoproteinemia, particualarly genetically determined forms; to collect high-quality data on the prevalence and incidence of atherosclerosis in different patterns of hyperlipoproteinemia; and to improve methods for detection, diagnosis and medical care of coronary heart disease. This study, along with its companion studies (the family study and the mortality follow-up study) seeks to provide improved information on the prevalence of hyperlipidemia and hyperlipoproteinemia, their determinants and sequelae.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book meets the long-awaited need for a comprehensive overview of the biological role of HDLs. Edited by one of the pioneers in HDL and cholesterol research, this monograph summarizes current knowledge on HDL turnover, regulation and physiology. Clearly structured, the various sections cover HDL structure, formation, secretion and removal, as well as plasma metabolic factors. The biological activities and clinical aspects are equally discussed, as is the impact of HDL on common diseases and their prevention.

The material is structured so that it is comprehensible to beginners as well as being useful for the more experienced practitioners. The envisaged audience is medical undergraduates, general practitioners, clinical biochemists and laboratory technicians.

Book Synopsis Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators by : Andrea Manni
Download or read book Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators written by Andrea Manni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-01-18 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and clinical researchers from a wide range of disciplines present a wealth of fresh scientific information on the biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, and clinical activity of SERMs. The basic science chapters of the book focus-with an eye to the development of the ideal SERM-on the complex mechanisms of estrogen action, including ligand-dependent conformational changes in alpha and beta, and the recruitment of co-activators and co-repressors which modulate the estrogen receptor transcriptional activity and contribute to its crosstalk with growth factor signaling. The clinical presentation reviews the data accumulated on currently available SERMs, primarily tamoxifen and raloxifene, in cancer treatment and prevention, as well as their effects on the reproductive, vascular, skeletal, and central nervous systems. A tentative approach to menopause-related health issues is also provided for women with and without a previous diagnosis of localized breast cancer.
Book Synopsis Health Psychology of Women by : Catherine Niven
Download or read book Health Psychology of Women written by Catherine Niven and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1993. Since health psychology is concerned with the universal values of life and death, wellbeing and suffering, it might be expected that its researchers would be keen to examine both male and female experiences of these phenomena. In practice, however, health psychology has followed health research in adopting a largely male perspective, both in its general approach and selection of topics. Women are different from men, not only in terms of anatomy, but in terms of the socialization processes to which they have been exposed and the social and economic positions they occupy. These differences have a significant impact on women's health, predisposing them to some disorders and protecting them from others. While it is true that male mortality exceeds female mortality from conception to old age, women's survival has the price of increased mental and physical illness. Men die, but women suffer. Despite a growing awareness of these differences there continues to be a distinct bias towards using male subjects for research and studying those diseases which affect more men than women. The Health Psychology of Women is a response to this imbalance and a challenge to the attitude which explores the behavior of half the population in order to draw conclusions about the experience of the whole. It is essential reading for students and researchers of psychology and health, and health professionals in training and practice.

Book Synopsis Nutritional Aspects Of Aging by : Linda H. Chen
Download or read book Nutritional Aspects Of Aging written by Linda H. Chen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first section of Volume 2, toxicological factors affecting nutritional status are discussed. Medications and alcohol may affect nutritional status. Section 2 provides a discussion of nutrition-related diseases which occur more frequently among the elderly. Cardiovascular diseases including coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease are the leading causes of death in the U.S. The relative importance of cardiovascular diseases, in terms of all deaths for the given age group, rises steadily with age. The death rate from these diseases is 28% for the middle age group (35 to 44) and is 69% for the old age group (age 75 and above. This reflects the continued progression of artherosclerosis with aging. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. The death rate from cancer also rises steadily with age. The death rate from diabetes mellitus increases progressively with age and more rapidly after the age of 45. The incidence of diabetes mellitus is 0.23% under age 25 and 6.2% over 45.
