Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We were sledding at Sugar House Park, Dec. 31, 1981. Talmage wanted to take the Glad-a-Boggan down the hill himself. Mom begged him to let her go with him. Grandma pleaded with him to let her go with him.Talmage said, "no." He had to go by himself. Mom watched him start down the hill. His plastic runnerless sled headed for the railing post, the one kids used to pull themselves up the hill. Kawham!! He was going about 50-70 mph when his head hit the post. Mom gave the baby to grandma and ran down the hill. Talmage was bleeding from his nose, mouth, and someplaceelse, maybe the back of his head. Someone called an ambulance. A lady led a prayer circle and shortly after, an Elder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints blessed Talmage that he would remain alive until the doctors could help him.The doctors didn't give much hope at the hospital. They removed the left side of his skull to allow for swelling of the brain. After 10 days, the doctors took him out of a drug-induced coma. He was paralyzed on the right side and had lost his speech. His head was swollen or sunken depending on how the shunt was working. The doctors and nurses called him "the miracle child."It is this gutsy little boy (I call him little because he is 26 years old and is 4 feet and 8 inches tall) who defeated the odds and survived that accident, who writes this book of poetry. This young man walks with a crutch and uses a wheelchair. He not only writes poetry, but he has been on a mission to Tempe, Arizona. He attended Salt Lake Community College Skill Center with studies in Medical Records. In this horrific accident, the left side of his brain was damaged. Today, Talmage has developed the right side of his brain, which is the creative side. Therefore, he enjoys writing poetry and has deep spiritual experiences and thoughts. I hope you appreciate the talents of this young man.
Book Synopsis Eternal Light and Earthly Concerns by : Paul Fouracre
Download or read book Eternal Light and Earthly Concerns written by Paul Fouracre and published by Artes Liberales. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early Christianity it was established that every church should have a light burning on the altar at all times. In this unique study, Eternal light and earthly concerns, looks at the material and social consequences of maintaining these 'eternal' lights. It investigates how the cost of lighting was met across western Europe throughout the whole of the Middle Ages, revealing the social organisation that was built up around maintaining the lights in the belief that burning them reduced the time spent in Purgatory. When that belief collapsed in the Reformation the eternal lights were summarily extinguished. The history of the lights thus offers not only a new account of change in medieval Europe, but also a sustained examination of the relationship between materiality and belief.

Book excerpt: Kenro Izu_s Eternal Light radiates spirituality. In Varanasi, known as the Indian _City of Light,_ Izu photographed festivals, rituals, cremations as well as individual experiences of joy and suffering related to death and the afterlife. In Allahabad, where the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers meet, Izu attended the festival of Kumbh Mela, and in the city of Vrindavan, he photographed among the thousands of temples dedicated to Krishna. Highly attuned to the emotions of his subjects, Izu_s exquisitely rendered photographs transcend earthly concerns. He has stated: _It_s as though the Hindu gods have suggested that I think about the question, where are people heading, in this life and after?_ Through these photographs Izu strives to find the answers. Kenro Izu is interested in focused clarity achieved through meditative stillness rather than through language. A simplifying quietude reduces the chatter behind the eyes and produces concentrated seeing. Arthur Ollman, founding director of the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego

Download or read book Eternal light written by Howard Goodall and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writing of a requiem is a special challenge for any composer. The great requiems of the past by composers such as Mozart, Verdi and Berlioz interpret the sacred requiem text literally, offering prayers of salvation for the departed, whose souls are assumed to be in purgatory facing a terrible judgment. Eternal Light: A Requiem, by the Emmy Award winning British composer and internationally acclaimed broadcaster Howard Goodall is a stunning new requiem for the modern day. In contrast it is intended to provide solace to the grieving, reflecting on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. Speaking about the work, Howard Goodall said, "For me, a modern requiem is one that acknowledges the unbearable loss and emptiness that accompanies the death of loved ones, a loss that is not easily ameliorated with platitudes about the joy awaiting us in the afterlife. This, like Brahms', is a requiem for the living, addressing their suffering and endurance, a requiem focusing on the consequences of interrupted lives." Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the Resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Book Synopsis Signposts to Silence by : J.S. Krüger
Download or read book Signposts to Silence written by J.S. Krüger and published by AOSIS. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signposts to Silence provides a theoretical map of what it terms ‘metaphysical mysticism’: the search for the furthest, most inclusive horizon, the domain of silence, which underlies the religious and metaphysical urge of humankind in its finest forms. Tracing the footsteps of pioneers of this exploration, the investigation also documents a number of historical pilgrimages from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds. Such mountaineers of the spirit, who created paths trodden by groups of followers over centuries and in some cases millennia, include Lao-Tzu and Chuang-Tzu, Siddhattha and Jesus, Sankara and Fa-tsang, Plato and Plotinus, Isaac Luria and Ibn Arabi, Aquinas and Hegel. Such figures, teachings and traditions (including the religions of ‘Judaism’, ‘Christianity’ and ‘Islam’; ‘Hinduism’, ‘Buddhism’ and ‘Taoism’) are understood as, at their most sublime, not final destiny and the end of the road, but signposts to a horizon of ultimate silence. The hermeneutical method employed in tracking such pioneers involves four steps: • sound historical-critical understanding of the context of the various traditions and figures • reconstruction of the subjective intentional structure of such persons and their teachings • design, by the author, of a theoretical map of the overall terrain of ‘metaphysical mysticism’, on which all such journeys of the spirit are to be located, while providing a theoretical context for understanding them tendentionally (i.e. taking the ultimate drift of their thinking essentially to transcend their subjective intentions) • drawing out, within the space available, some political (taken in a wide sense) implications from the above, such as religio-political stances as well as ecological and gender implications. Continuing the general direction of thought within what the author endorses to be the best in metaphysical mysticism in its historical manifestations, the book aims to contribute to peace amongst religions in the contemporary global cultural situation. It relativizes all claims to exclusive, absolute truth that might be proclaimed by any religious or metaphysical, mystical position, while providing space for not only tolerating, but also affirming the unique value and dignity of each. This orientation moves beyond the stances of enmity or indifference or syncretism or homogenisation of all, as well as that of mere friendly toleration. It investigates the seemingly daunting and inhospitable yet immensely significant Antarctica of the Spirit, the ‘meta’-space of silence behind the various forms of wordy ‘inter’-relationships. It affirms pars pro toto, totum pro parte, and pars pro parte: that each religious, mystical and metaphysical orientation in its relative singularity represents or contains the whole and derives value from that, and that each represents or contains every other. This homoversal solidarity stimulating individual uniqueness is different from and in fact implies criticism of the process of globalisation. While not taking part in a scientific argument as such, Signposts to Silence aims at promoting an understanding of science and metaphysical mysticism as mutual context for each other, and it listens to a number of voices from the domain of science that understand this.
