When Mother Baptist had completed the long term of officex allowed to a Foundress, in May, 1867, she ceased to be Superioress and became Assistant to the new Reverend Mother, Mary Gabriel Brown; but after the shortest interval allowable, namely three years, the burden of "superiority" was laid upon her once more, as it was again and again in precisely similar circumstances until the end. This first break was considered a proper time for the execution of a project which seemed to many of the Community useful and even necessary--namely, that Mother Baptist should visit Europe and Ireland for the purpose of getting more suitable postulants, who were by no means numerous in this newest of the United States. But the Bishop of San Francisco, Dr. Alemany, held very strict and very wise views as to the general inexpediency of such journeys, and the idea was abandoned.
