Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Martin Luther, Vol. 1 of 2 But Augustine Bishop of Hippo, a convert from Manichaeism through the excellent example of his mother Monica and the preaching of ambrose, is the greatest name of this period. He taught salvation by grace alone, as none had taught it since St. Paul and he may with justice be esteemed the spi ritual father of Luther and the Reformation. He was raised up in God's providence to be a witness to the truth before the grossest doctrinal corruptions had taken firm root, as Luther was raised up when the papal church was overshadowed with their fullest growth. In the intervening thousand years, what ever true Christianity subsisted within the Roman pale is due to the Scriptures or to Augustine their best expositor. And it would be as impossible for Rome to reconcile the decrees of the Council of Trent with the writings of Augustine, whose authority she professes to recognize, as with those of Luther himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martin Luther, Vol. 2: His Life and Work The verdict of the Leipzig wiseacres, though endorsed extensively enough by priestly conclaves and University senates, was reversed by the public Opinion of Europe. Luther, and not Eck, proved to have spoken the word that the world was listening for. Few cared to note the details of the argumentative conflict; but Europe beheld in Eck the champion of Papal authority and tradition, and in Luther the advocate of freedom and the Bible. More distinctly than before, Luther was made con spicuous as the uplifter of a banner against Rome. European society had for many years been becoming alienated from, and suspicious of, the Roman Church. That vague, half-defined, latent sense of weariness with one order' of things and longing for another, which works below the social surface, and is the mightiest of forces in preparing the way for revolution, was in league with Luther. In these circumstances, the counsel of Ahitophel for the Papacy would have been to impose upon its friends a policy of silence. I For, Christ is here himself a diligent observer of his own rule, which he has delivered to us concerning our prayers, -that there is no necessity for using long and pompous words, but, that simple words coming forth from the heart are the most effectual. Wherefore, let no one be offended at this prayer, nor let him through sleepy unconcern negligently disregard it, nor pass it by with out heed, as containing words that are useless, or com mouly spoken by men. For it may appear to any one, that he could make a much better prayer; whereas, if he were to attempt it, he would soon feel that the matter, the words, and the manner would fail him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Martin Luther Among the immortal names that have honored their kind and glorified their God, stands pre-eminently the name of Martin Luther. Yet not in name alone does his greatness shine forth in splendor after the lapse of four centuries, but in word and deed, in character and in uence. His private life and public career are a unit, for both were the manifestations of a sincere soul, a generous heart, a true man. The enlightened, civilized world celebrates the four hundredth anniversary of this great man's birth. He belongs to the world, to Church and State, for both have felt the in uence of his teachings. In the truest estimate of his God-given work he belongs to no sect or party, he is a man of and for the people. In what better way can the memorial of his birth be observed than by a study of his life, his character, and his works and above all, by a practical appreciation of the in uences which have proceeded from him and blessed mankind? Book excerpt: "All who call on God in true faith, earnestly from the heart, will certainly be heard, and will receive what they have asked and desired." - Martin Luther As one of the most influential and recognizable religious figures in history, Martin Luther (1483-1546) continues to impact the world over 550 years after his death. Luther was a German priest and theologian whose writings and teachings sparked the Protestant Reformation in the early 16th century, creating one of the greatest schisms in the history of the Catholic Church and touching off religious turmoil and bloodshed that would engulf Europe for the next 2 centuries. Born shortly after the invention of the printing press, Luther became one of Europe's best selling authors, along with others like Erasmus, and his theology was mass produced across Europe. He strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment of sin could be purchased with money, known as indulgences, and he confronted indulgence salesman Johann Tetzel with his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517, one of the most important religious writings of all time. His refusal to retract all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the Pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the emperor. Luther, of course, did not back down. Although the story about him nailing 95 Theses to a church door is almost surely apocryphal, Luther continued that salvation is not earned by good deeds but received only as a free gift of God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ as redeemer from sin. His theology also continued to directly challenge the Pope's authority by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge. Like anybody whose life was so influential, Luther's legacy has been the subject of many myths and legends, all of which have come to obscure the man himself, even while they maximize the importance of his accomplishments.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Martin Luther: To Which Is Prefixed an Expository Essay on the Lutheran Reformation There are three different methods in which the exa mination of an event like the Reformation - if it should not be rather called a series of progressing and devel oped events - may be conducted. By the first, its principles might be investigated and tested. Such an examination would suppose the proper character of. The facts to be as yet unascertained; and would have for its object the resolution of the events into their ori ginating and component principles, and the comparison of these with some previously-acknowledged standard, that so a definite sentence might be pronounced upon the Whole series. This would be the method of ori ginal investigation. 1. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Catholics paid it the sincere compliment of plagiarism for the rapidly executed version of Emser was but a light revision of his opponent's work. Only the Zwing lians for a time stood aloof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martin Luther, Vol. 1: His Life and Work However unlike in respect of merit, this work on Luther has an affinity in class and kind with such books as Dr. Newman's Apologia and Mr. John Morley's Volfaire. These are personal histories; but the personal history - all the more bound to be true as a personal history on this account - serves for pre sentation of an important phase of belief, a notable chapter in spiritual evolution. Dr. Newman portrays and exemplifies one type of religion; and without question it is in these days a widely extended type. He accepts the Catholic Roman Church as the oracle of God, infallibly interpreting Scripture, and rendering credible doctrines, such as transubstantiation.
