Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Book excerpt: In Japan, it is well-known that there are mysterious documents that may be related to modern UFO phenomena. It is certain that they were written about two hundred years ago, long before 1947 (when the first UFO sighting was recorded). These documents state the details of an incident that occurred on a Japanese beach in 1803 and the description provided resembles modern UFO close encounters of the third kind. In most of the documents, a disk-shaped ship called Utsuro-bune (UFO?), a strange woman speaking an unknown language (alien?) and strange characters (alien hieroglyphs?) are depicted. At present, a total of twelve documents detailing the same incident have been found which is an indicator of the validity of the incident, given the high number. If the UFO-like craft described in the documents based on actual observations of UFOs in Japan two hundred years ago is verified, the documents can be considered as strong evidence of the existence of UFOs.From the viewpoint of folklore, the incident has been considered as part of the legends of Utsuro-bune (hollow ship in English) for a long time; these legends have been passed down in Japan, and Utsuro-bune is a ship based on the human imagination. However, following the arrival of UFO fever from the USA in 1947, a mystery emerged around how the disk-shaped ship depicted in the documents resembles a UFO to such an extent. Can it be considered the long-waited hard evidence of the existence of UFOs? This intriguing story has been known as the Utsuro-bune UFO legend in Japan. The purpose of this book is to document an exhaustive study of this Utsuro-bune UFO legend from scientific, historical, and folkloric viewpoints. How did the Japanese author of the documents in the Edo Period, which was two hundred years ago, imagine UFO-like shapes when the visual characteristics of a modern UFO could not possibly have been known at that time? Were the pictures of the Utsuro-bune UFO drawn based on an actual UFO sighting dating back to the Edo Period? This book will be the first, the only, and the most complete documentation of this mystery; it is available in English and employs principles of both science and reason. The reader will be fascinated by the bizarre circumstances of this mystery which can be summarized by the following question: "Why are ships similar to UFOs depicted in the ancient literature of the Edo Period, which took place two hundred years ago, in Japan?

This 21-volume set contains titles, originally published between 1976 and 1990 as well as a biography from 1957 written by one of his closest friends. The first 18 books are a set of concordances and indexes to Conrad’s printed works, which were part of a project directed by Todd K. Bender at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA and are among the first attempts to use the power of computers to enhance our reading environment and assist in lexicography, scholarly editing, and literary analysis. The set also contains a meticulously compiled bibliography of writings on Joseph Conrad, as well as an original and powerful analysis of his major work.

Book excerpt: Joseph Conrad at Mid-Century was first published in 1957. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Published in the centennial year of Joseph Conrad's birth, this is the first comprehensive bibliography of the writings by and about this important author. Though there is a current revival of interest in Conrad's work, criticism and scholarship devoted to this celebrated novelist and short story writer have lagged behind that of other major twentieth-century authors. This compendium of data about the growing body of Conrad literature should stimulate further interest by bringing together a vast amount of reference information that has been widely scattered until now. The bibliography lists works by Conrad, including serializations, significant translations, and film adaptations, and writings about Conrad, including book and periodical material in western languages, appearing from 1895, the year of publication of Almayer's Folly, through 1955. There are a total of 1200 numbered entries containing approximately 3000 items. In the first section, devoted to Conrad's works, the enumeration of English and American editions is followed by the listing of translations. Most of Conrad's essays and many of his novels were serialized before they appeared in book form, and these serializations are listed here also. The second section lists the studies of Conrad's life and works, as published in books, pamphlets, periodical articles, and reviews. Data are included on bibliographies, commemorative issues of periodicals, criticism of individual works and of Conrad's work in general, and parodies and other miscellany.
