Book excerpt: Sidney and Beatrice Webb were among the outstanding political personalities in the period 1890-1945. They were leading figures in the Fabian Society, prominent historians, and founders of the London School of Economics and the New Statesman. They exchanged letters with many of the leading figures in the political, intellectual and literary worlds of the time, among them Herbert Asquith, Ramsay MacDonald, George Bernard Shaw and Bertrand Russell. Volume II of the letters covers the years between the Webb marriage and their return from Asia in 1912. They were the prime years of the partnership, in which the Webbs came to dominate the Fabian Society, founded the London School of Economics and launched their campaign for the reform of the Poor Law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells are among the best-known and most controversial literary figures of the twentieth century. Both were rebelliously critical of the social and political, familial and sexual conventions and structures of their time. They shared broadly similar interests, but their lifestyles differed sharply - as did their views on many subjects, including those discussed in their correspondence: religion, socialism, science, war and world history, the theatre, the profession of authorship, and more. The letters are always forthright, often abusive and quarrelsome, sometimes suggesting that the relationship cannot last. They are also often warm, good-natured, playful, and generous - reflecting a fundamental mutual respect and similarity of outlook, however contrasting the temperament and style. The great majority of the two writers' correspondence is published here for the first time. This volumes comprises the personal correspondence of Shaw and Wells through the course of their friendship of more than forty years, and includes and introductory essay by J. Percy Smith. The letters are fully annotated, and are accompanied by information about the circumstances under which each was written, to enable the reader to follow the course of the frequently tempestuous relationship.

Book excerpt: "Tomalin’s The Young H.G. Wells is hard to beat, being friendly, astute and a pleasure to read.” —Michael Dirda, Washington Post “Claire Tomalin’s short, engaging biography The Young H.G. Wells is a welcome addition to the conversation. . . Her book makes a strong case for Wells’s enduring importance.”—Heller McAlpin, The Wall Street Journal From acclaimed literary biographer Claire Tomalin, a complex and fascinating exploration of the early life of the influential writer and public figure H. G. Wells How did the first forty years of H. G. Wells's life shape the father of science fiction? From his impoverished childhood in a working-class English family and determination to educate himself at any cost to his complicated marriages, love affair with socialism, and the serious ill health that dominated his twenties and thirties, H. G. Wells's extraordinary early life would set him on a path to become one of the world's most influential writers. The sudden success of The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds transformed his life and catapulted him to international fame; he became the writer who most inspired Orwell and countless others and predicted men walking on the moon seventy years before it happened. In this remarkable, empathetic biography, Claire Tomalin paints a fascinating portrait of a man like no other, driven by curiosity and desiring reform, a socialist and a futurist whose new and imaginative worlds continue to inspire today.

Book excerpt: This early work by Beatrice Webb was originally published in the early 20th century and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Our Partnership' contains details on the wealth of topics that Beatrice and her husband, Sidney, worked on together. Beatrice Potter Webb was born in Gloucester, England in 1858. Educated at home by a governess, she also travelled widely and, due to this, gained a keen interest in sociology. Using the valuable resource of her father's library, studying became a passion, and she soon began to conduct her own sociological investigations. However, it was a time she spent with relatives in Lancashire, that Beatrice had her first glimpse of the working classes and their way of life. In 1913, along with her husband, Beatrice created the New Statesman, which grew to become an incredibly influential publication. They also founded the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1895. The Webb's, together, wrote eleven volumes of work which arguably shaped the way subsequent scholars thought about sociology.
