Topics treated range from early attempts in medieval England to measure the carrying capacity of ships, through the advent in Renaissance Italy and England of business newspapers that reported on the traffic of ships, cargoes and market prices, to the state of the economy of France over the two hundred years before the French Revolution and of the British West Indies between 1760 and 1790. Included is the story of Thomas Irving who challenged and thwarted the likes of John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
Download or read book Whistleblowers written by Allison Stanger and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "brisk and interesting" (Jill Lepore, New Yorker) exploration of whistleblowing in America, from the Revolutionary War to the Trump era PROSE Award winner in the Government, Policy and Politics category Misconduct by those in high places is always dangerous to reveal. Whistleblowers thus face conflicting impulses: by challenging and exposing transgressions by the powerful, they perform a vital public service--yet they always suffer for it. This episodic history brings to light how whistleblowing, an important but unrecognized cousin of civil disobedience, has held powerful elites accountable in America. Analyzing a range of whistleblowing episodes, from the corrupt Revolutionary War commodore Esek Hopkins (whose dismissal led in 1778 to the first whistleblower protection law) to Edward Snowden, to the dishonesty of Donald Trump, Allison Stanger reveals the centrality of whistleblowing to the health of American democracy. She also shows that with changing technology and increasing militarization, the exposure of misconduct has grown more difficult to do and more personally costly for those who do it--yet American freedom, especially today, depends on it.

Book Synopsis John Paul Jones' Memoir of the American Revolution by : John Paul Jones
Download or read book John Paul Jones' Memoir of the American Revolution written by John Paul Jones and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolutionary career of John Paul Jones, which is the subject of this memoir, needs no elaboration here. His voyages, first on the Alfred under Capt. Dudley Saltonstall, and later at the helm of the sloops Providence, Ranger and Ariel, the old East Indiaman Duras (renamed the Bonhomme Richard), and the American-built frigate Alliance are thoroughly recounted here. What is generally not known, however, is the commodore's post-revolutionary war career. Having made numerous inveterate enemies during the course of the war, both in and out of Congress, Jones had little chance of gaining flag rank in the American navy. Realizing this, he decided in the spring of 1788 to pursue fame in other waters, first in the service of Louis XVI of France and later under Catherine the Great of Russia. France, unfortunately, was in no position to expand its naval staff, but Catherine, who was in need of good officers to fight in the second Russo-Turkish war, offered him an admiral's commission in the Russian navy, and on May 26, 1788, Rear Admiral Jones raised his flag on the Black Sea. Anyone familiar with the life of John Paul Jones, one of America's most popular naval heroes, would agree that in fighting spirit the commodore was perhaps equal to any officer in the history of the United States Navy. Unquestionably, he was deserving of the belated tribute paid to him by President Theodore Roosevelt on April 24, 1906, at the formal reception at Annapolis of the body of Capt. Paul Jones, as the hero was known at the height of his career. President Roosevelt admonished an audience of naval officers and cadets, statesmen and visiting dignitaries: "Every officer in our Navy should know by heart the deeds of John Paul Jones. Every officer in our Navy should feel in each fiber of his being an eager desire to emulate the energy, the professional capacity, the indomitable determination and dauntless scorn of death which marked John Paul Jones above all his fellows."

Book Synopsis Dissent, Discourse, and Democracy by : Joshua Guitar
Download or read book Dissent, Discourse, and Democracy written by Joshua Guitar and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government whistleblowers contest authoritarian power. Yet, critical scholars have only minimally examined whistleblower discourses and hesitate to substantively interrogate the ideology of statism. In Dissent, Discourse, and Democracy: Whistleblowers as Sites of Political Contestation, the author addresses this exigency and critiques government whistleblowing discourses through an Anarchist lens, reifying a pattern of discursive statist behaviors. Upon exposing government malfeasance, whistleblowers and their corresponding symbolic designations endure an erasure of agency via abstraction. Joshua Guitar conceptualizes the totality of abstruction, identifying it both as a rhetorical manifestation of ideology and a method of critical rhetorical inquiry. The author reveals how whistleblowing, a quintessential tool of dissent within democracy, has been systematically constrained within the public forum and weaponized for statist interests. Scholars of political communication and rhetoric will find this book particularly interesting.
