Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE author of this work makes no pretense of originality in the telling of these stories of olden times. They have been gleaned from many sources, and are the common heritage of all who love to write them anew and hear them again. Only the words belong to the story teller; the story itself is as old as the race. In the lapse of years and with the much telling of these stories there is no longer a line between fact and fiction. How much is true and how much is false does not matter; the story itself is the thing, and one need not worry whether it really happened or not. Much of it is palpable fiction, but much of it is true. Let us not be too critical of a story when it is a few hundred years old. At any rate, the stories herein contained are a part of the great inheritance that the boys and girls of this day have received from the past, and to which they are entitled in all fullness and freedom. If the reading of them shall add anything to the enjoyment or to the information of those who are always young in heart because they always thrill at romance and adventure, the writer of these old time tales will be amply repaid. Book excerpt: Most children are familiar with the legend of William Tell, the Swiss hero who successfully shot a cross bolt through an apple placed on his son's head gaining his and his son's life from the evil Austrian, Gessler.William Tell Told Again by P.G. Wodehouse gives the legend new life.In this book the tale of Tell is retold, with variations. So much doubt has been cast on William Tell's doings-some going to the length of saying that he never existed--that the publishers feel that this book should be a valuable contribution to the history of the great archer, as showing what it was that he really did. This is the classic story of William Tell - Swiss patriot and great apple-shooter - as seen through the eyes of English humorist P.G. Wodehouse. No Swiss were (permanently) injured in the telling of this story; however, results differed for Austrian tyrants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legend of William Tell takes on new meaning in this wonderful retelling by master storyteller H. E. Marshall. William Tell is the folk hero of Switzerland whose exploits were first recorded in a fifteenth-century Swiss chronicle. Set in the time of the first Swiss Confederacy, Tell's story runs alongside that of the struggle for independence waged against the Holy Roman Empire by the Alpine nation. According to the legend, Gessler, a newly-appointed Austrian ruler of two local regions, caused his hat to be placed on a raised pole in the central square of a village, and ordered that all the townsfolk bow before it. When Tell refused to bow to the hat, Gessler ordered Tell's son to be seized. The tyrannical ruler then demanded that Tell shoot an apple off his son's head or both of them would be executed. Tell took the shot, and succeeded... From there, numerous incidents took place which led to the assassination of Gessler, an act that sparked the Swiss rebellion. There is no real evidence that William Tell actually existed or that the events recounted in the legend took place. Marshall addresses it this way in her introduction: "Yet some people say that William Tell never lived. Let them visit the Rutli, Tell's Platte, the Hollow Way, and let them ask themselves whether Tell lives in the hearts of his countrymen or not."
