Book excerpt: Drawing on their work on performance management within the ‘beyond budgeting’ movement over the past ten years, including many interviews and case studies, Jeremy Hope, Peter Bunce and Franz Röösli set out in this book an executive guide to building a new management model based on eight key change management issues: 1. Governance: From rules and budgets to purpose and values 2. Success: From fixed targets to relative improvement 3. Organization: From centralized functions to customer-oriented teams 4. Accountability: From narrow targets to holistic success criteria 5. Trust: From central control to local autonomy 6. Transparency: From closed information to open book management 7. Rewards: From individual incentives to team-based reward 8. Risk: From complying with rules to understanding pressure points This book is about rethinking how we manage organizations in a post-industrial, post credit crunch world where innovative management models represent the only remaining source of sustainable competitive advantage.[i] The changes suggested by the authors will enable and encourage a cultural climate change that will help organizations to attract and keep the best people as well as drive continuous innovation and growth. Above all, The CEO's Dilemma is about learning how to change business - based on best practice and innovation drawn from leaders world-wide who have built and managed successful organizations.

Book excerpt: The subject of leadership is a much-studied thing. There are books, seminars, blogs, podcasts, videos galore on the subject matter. So, why add another one you say? Good question. This may appear a bit self-serving, but you'll have to read another book (this one) for the full answer. Let me begin with a hint. There are a host of leadership stylizations out there, creatively presented by leadership gurus. But when all dummied down, they fall into three basic categories: 1) Autocratic, 2) Democratic 3) Laissez-faire. Most leaders find themselves exclusively STUCK in one of these styles. The first dilemma: Where do I fit? How do I fit? What is the best fit? This leading to an even greater quandary. What if nothing fits perfectly? If already fitted, how do I BREAK LOOSE? 5 BREAKING LOOSE models inside.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abusive leaders are now held accountable for their crimes in a way that was unimaginable just a few decades ago. What are the consequences of this recent push for international justice? In The Justice Dilemma, Daniel Krcmaric explains why the "golden parachute" of exile is no longer an attractive retirement option for oppressive rulers. He argues that this is both a blessing and a curse: leaders culpable for atrocity crimes fight longer civil wars because they lack good exit options, but the threat of international prosecution deters some leaders from committing atrocities in the first place. The Justice Dilemma therefore diagnoses an inherent tension between conflict resolution and atrocity prevention, two of the signature goals of the international community. Krcmaric also sheds light on several important puzzles in world politics. Why do some rulers choose to fight until they are killed or captured? Why not simply save oneself by going into exile? Why do some civil conflicts last so much longer than others? Why has state-sponsored violence against civilians fallen in recent years? While exploring these questions, Krcmaric marshals statistical evidence on patterns of exile, civil war duration, and mass atrocity onset. He also reconstructs the decision-making processes of embattled leaders—including Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, Charles Taylor of Liberia, and Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso—to show how contemporary international justice both deters atrocities and prolongs conflicts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of the best-selling text, Ethical Leadership and Decision Making in Education, continues to address the increasing interest in ethics and assists educational leaders with the complex dilemmas in today’s challenging and diverse society. Through discussion and analysis of real-life moral dilemmas that educational leaders face in their schools and communities, authors Shapiro and Stefkovich demonstrate the application of the four ethical paradigms—the ethics of justice, care, critique, and profession. After an illustration of how the Multiple Ethical Paradigm approach may be applied to real dilemmas, the authors present a series of cases written by students and academics in the field representing the dilemmas faced by practicing educational leaders in urban, suburban, and rural settings in an era full of complications and contradictions. Following each case are questions that call for thoughtful, complex thinking and help readers come to grips with their own ethical codes and apply them to practical situations. New in the Fourth Edition: A new chapter on technology versus respect, focusing on ethical issues such as cyber-bullying and sexting. New cases on teachers with guns, the military and education, children of undocumented immigrants, homeless students, videos in bathrooms, incentive pay, first responders, private alternative high schools, verbal threats, and gaming etiquette. Updates throughout to reflect contemporary issues and recent scholarship in the field of ethical leadership. This edition adds teaching notes for the instructor that stress the importance of self-reflection, use of new technologies, and global appeal of ethical paradigms and dilemmas. Easily adaptable to a variety of uses, this book is a critical resource for a wide range of audiences, including both aspiring and practicing administrators, teacher leaders, and educational policy makers.

Book excerpt: Throughout their time in office, American presidents are often forced to choose between leading the nation and leading their party. In an earlier time when the major parties were less polarized, this leadership dilemma, while challenging, was not nearly as vexing as it is today. American presidents now find themselves with little room to maneuver, compelled to serve the Constitution on the one hand and yet caught within bitter partisan disputes and large numbers of unaffiliated voters on the other. The contributors to this volume investigate how recent presidents have navigated these increasingly rocky political waters. Focusing on campaign strategy, presidential rhetoric, relations with Congress, domestic and foreign policy, The Presidential Leadership Dilemma presents a wide-ranging, detailed, and fascinating study of how contemporary presidents face the challenge at the heart of every presidency.

However, there is nowhere that this has proven to be as challenging of a task as Japan, which has seen its top leaders change more often over the past 25 years than any other major country in the world. The current prime minister has strived to put an end to this pattern, but can he buck this historical trend? More fundamentally, why do Japan's prime ministers find it so difficult to project strong leadership, or even stay in office? And what are the ramifications for Japan's partners and for the world? This volume, authored by contributors who straddle the scholarly and policymaking worlds in Japan, explores the obstacles facing Japan as it looks for greater leadership and explains why this matters for the rest of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian Leadership Dilemma addresses how Christians can live in newness of life above victimization, judgment, and confusion in a world that seems to be barreling forward on a collision course with the very truth, indeed, the only truth that will make people truly free. Both freedom and bondage are in the heart, and both are below the surface of the noise of life. The Christian Leadership Dilemma addresses the systemic root causes of this dilemma that stems from Christian leaders who are diverted from their heavenly calling through grace and instead adopt a worldly approach to Christianity. It notes quality leaders are not to lord over or dominate followers by leveraging power to control them but rather to serve, be helpers of their joy, and be good examples. It also addresses how to settle any issues in the Christian community and how to respond to conflict from within or without the community. With this foundation, The Christian Leadership Dilemma clarifies what true “ministry” is and the necessity of obeying God rather than men when it comes to standing upon the Christian’s God-given justification through the faith of Jesus Christ. At times, those who have endeavored over the centuries to bring clarity and reform to the Christian community have been accused and maligned because they disturbed the status quo. The Christian Leadership Dilemma is intended to echo those voices of reform resounding as the single voice of a choir calling to who truly desire to know how to navigate the Christian experience successfully, particularly in times of leadership crises.
