Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latin Church During Anglo-Saxon Times The volume now offered respectfully to the world, was called forth by a series of animadversions made upon the author's Anglo-Saxon Church in Dr. Lingard's History and Antiquities of the Anglo-Saxon Church. A pamphlet in reply was first intended, but a larger work seemed afterwards likely to be more useful. The matter that provoked so much censure, has a tendency to confirm Englishmen in their affection for unadulterated scriptural religion. This faith is, probably, the main-spring of their national greatness, and is quite above any aid from concealment, misrepresentation, mystification, or evasion. To show that no such arts have been used in compiling the Anglo-Saxon Church, is the aim of the following pages. A vindication of the statements brought forward in that book is due to the public, which has received it with a degree of indulgence not often shown to similar works. A sufficient examination of his objections to it is also due to the talented and learned writer, who has found so many openings for impeaching its correctness. Book Synopsis The Hymns of the Anglo-Saxon Church by : Inge B. Milfull
Download or read book The Hymns of the Anglo-Saxon Church written by Inge B. Milfull and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-12-05 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a study and critical edition of the corpus of hymns sung by monks and canons in their services in England before the Norman Conquest. When Christianity was introduced into Anglo-Saxon England at the end of the sixth century, the practice of singing hymns in the liturgy of the Office was already well established. The hymnal that the missionaries brought with them was replaced during the Benedictine Reform in the tenth century by another body of hymns, itself introduced from the Continent. This edition assembles textual evidence of these early hymns, some of it hitherto unpublished, based on all extant manuscripts. Of these, an eleventh-century Latin manuscript known as the 'Durham Hymnal' (and in particular its accompanying Old English interlinear gloss) provides the core of the edition and its base manuscript. An introduction and commentary include descriptions of the manuscripts concerned and discussions of the sources, liturgical use and music of the hymns, as well as the phonology and vocabulary of the Old English gloss. The text of the hymns is accompanied by a translation of the Latin into modern English prose.
Book Synopsis The Divine Office in Anglo-Saxon England, 597-c.1000 by : Jesse D. Billett
Download or read book The Divine Office in Anglo-Saxon England, 597-c.1000 written by Jesse D. Billett and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When did Anglo-Saxon monks begin to recite the daily hours of prayer, the Divine Office, according to the liturgical pattern prescribed in the Rule of St Benedict? Going beyond the simplistic assumptions of previous scholarship, this book reveals that the early Anglo-Saxon Church followed a non-Benedictine Office tradition inherited from the Roman missionaries; the Benedictine Office arrived only when tenth-century monastic reformers such as Dunstan and Æthelwold decided that "true" monks should not use the same Office liturgy as secular clerics, a decision influenced by eighth- and ninth-century Frankish reforms. The author explains, for the first time, how this reduced liturgical diversity in the Western Church to a basic choice between "secular" and "monastic" forms of the Divine Office; he also uses previously unedited manuscript fragments to illustrate the differing attitudes and Continental connections of the English Benedictine reformer, and to show that survivals of the early Anglo-Saxon liturgy may be identifiable in later medieval sources.
Book Synopsis Leaders of the Anglo-Saxon Church by : Alexander R. Rumble
Download or read book Leaders of the Anglo-Saxon Church written by Alexander R. Rumble and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays bring out the important and complex roles played by Anglo-Saxon churchmen, including Bede and lesser-known figures. Both episcopal and abbatial authority were of fundamental importance to the development of the Christian church in Anglo-Saxon England. Bishops and heads of monastic houses were invested with a variety of types of power and influence. Their actions, decisions, and writings could change not only their own institutions, but also the national church, while their interaction with the king and his court affected wider contemporary society. Theories of ecclesiastical leadership were expounded in contemporary texts and documents. But how far did image or ideal reflect reality? How much room was there for individuals to use their office to promote new ideas? The papers in this volumeillustrate the important roles played by individual leading ecclesiastics in England, both within the church and in the wider political sphere, from the late seventh to the mid eleventh century. The undeniable authority of Bede and Bishop Æthelwold is demonstrated but also the influence of less-familiar figures such as Bishop Wulfsige of Sherborne, Archbishop Ecgberht of York and St Leoba. The book draws on both textual and material evidence to show the influence (by both deed and reputation) of powerful personalities not only on the developing institutions of the English church but also on the secular politics of their time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian theology and religious belief were crucially important to Anglo-Saxon society, and are manifest in the surviving textual, visual and material evidence. This is the first full-length study investigating how Christian theology and religious beliefs permeated society and underpinned social values in early medieval England. The influence of the early medieval Church as an institution is widely acknowledged, but Christian theology itself is generally considered to have been accessible only to a small educated elite. This book shows that theology had a much greater and more significant impact than has been recognised. An examination of theology in its social context, and how it was bound up with local authorities and powers, reveals a much more subtle interpretation of secular processes, and shows how theological debate affected the ways that religious and lay individuals lived and died. This was not a one-way flow, however: this book also examines how social and cultural practices and interests affected the development of theology in Anglo-Saxon England, and how ’popular’ belief interacted with literary and academic traditions. Through case-studies, this book explores how theological debate and discussion affected the personal perspectives of Christian Anglo-Saxons, including where possible those who could not read. In all of these, it is clear that theology was not detached from society or from the experiences of lay people, but formed an essential constituent part.
