Book excerpt: The highly-anticipated finale to the New York Times bestselling 5th Wave series. The enemy is Other. The enemy is us. They’re down here, they’re up there, they’re nowhere. They want the Earth, they want us to have it. They came to wipe us out, they came to save us. But beneath these riddles lies one truth: Cassie has been betrayed. So has Ringer. Zombie. Nugget. And all 7.5 billion people who used to live on our planet. Betrayed first by the Others, and now by ourselves. In these last days, Earth’s remaining survivors will need to decide what’s more important: saving themselves . . . or saving what makes us human. Praise for The Last Star “Yancey’s prose remains achingly precise, and this grows heavier, tighter, and more impossible to put down as the clock runs out…this blistering finale proves the truth of the first two volumes: it was never about the aliens.”—Booklist, starred review “A haunting, unforgettable finale.”—Kirkus Reviews “Yancey doesn’t hit the breaks for one moment, and the action is intense, but the language always stays lyrical and lovely. It’s a satisfying end to an impressive trilogy, true to the characters and the world Yancey created.”—Entertainment Weekly “Yancey has capped off his riveting series with a perfect ending.”—TeenReads.com “[T]he ending provides both satisfaction and heartbreak.”—Publishers Weekly “Yancey's writing is just as solid and descriptive as in the first two books….What Yancey does beautifully is reveal the human condition.”—Examiner.com "Rick Yancey sticks the (alien) landing in the action-packed finale to his The 5th Wave invasion saga . . . . And the author gives us a major dose of girl power as well, pairing Cassie and Ringer for an uneasy alliance that provides the best moments in this fantastic series’ thought-provoking and satisfying conclusion.”—USA Today Praise for The 5th Wave Now a major motion picture starring Chloë Grace Moretz "Remarkable, not-to-be-missed-under-any-circumstances."—Entertainment Weekly "A modern sci-fi masterpiece . . ."—USAToday.com "Wildly entertaining . . . I couldn't turn the pages fast enough."—Justin Cronin, The New York Times Book Review Praise for The Infinite Sea “Heart-pounding pacing, lyrical prose and mind-bending twists . . .”—The New York Times Book Review “Impressively improves on the excellent beginning of the trilogy.”—USA Today “An epic sci-fi novel with all the romance, action, and suspense you could ever want.”—Seventeen.com Books in the series: The 5th Wave (The First Book of The 5th Wave) The Infinite Sea (The Second Book of The 5th Wave) The Last Star (The Third Book of the The 5th Wave)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fall term at Fenton Academy had begun. Dick Randall came slowly down the dormitory steps, then stopped and stood hesitating, as if doubtful which way to turn. Uncertainty, indeed, was uppermost in his mind. He felt confused and out of place in his new surroundings, like a stranger in a strange land. The day was dark and gloomy. The sky was overcast, and the afternoon sun shone halfheartedly from behind the clouds. A fresh breeze bent the trees in the quadrangle, scattering a shower of leaves about the yard. In spite of himself, Dick felt his spirits flag. 'A' thousand miles lay between him and home; and except for a few brief visits, made close at hand, this was his first real venture into the world. Unaccustomed to the change, unacquainted with his classmates, with the steady routine of work and play not yet begun, he was wretchedly homesick; and strive as he would, he could not keep his thoughts, for five minutes together, from his father and mother, and the white-walled farm-house on the slope of the mountain, looking down over the valley and the meadowland below. He felt ashamed and disgusted with himself, for he was no longer a "kid"; he was almost seventeen, and big and strong for his age; and yet, fight it as he might, the longing for home would not down. Thus he stood dreaming, gazing unseeingly across the yard, until presently, with a start, he came to himself. A friendly hand smote him between the shoulder-blades, a friendly arm was drawn through his, and he turned to meet the somewhat quizzical glance of his classmate and next-door neighbor in the dormitory--Harry Allen. Instinctively Dick smiled. He had sat next to Allen at supper the night before and had taken a liking to him from the start. Allen had chattered away steadily, all through the meal, yet his talk had been unaffected, entertaining, and wholly free from any effort at "trying to be funny" or "showing off." He was Randall's opposite in every way--as slight and frail as Dick was big and broad-shouldered, as light as Dick was dark, and apparently, at the present moment, as cheerful as Dick was depressed. "Well, Randall," he asked, "what you got on your mind? Composing a speech?"

Book excerpt: When it comes to a career in coaching sports, there is no teaching without doing—and practice doesn’t just make perfect, it makes a whole life. In this heartfelt memoir, first-time author Thomas H. Peart recounts the story of his experiences growing up in Alexandria, Minnesota, playing hockey, joining the US Marine Corps, attending college, and eventually entering a lengthy and impressive career as a coach for high school, college, and professional hockey—both stateside and overseas—alongside a number of other sports. Beginning in childhood and throughout his life, all the way up to the moment of his authoring this very book, Peart’s career as a coach is a testament to the value of learning through experience, teaching with care and respect, and always remaining open to opportunity. A satisfying slice of life in the postwar American Midwest, this book will make a great addition to the shelves of Peart’s contemporaries, as well as anyone interested in the worlds of amateur and professional sports. Because those who do, teach—and those who teach, do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From assassinations to student riots, this is “a splendidly evocative account of a historic year—a year of tumult, of trauma, and of tragedy” (Arthur Schlesinger Jr.). In the United States, the 1960s were a period of unprecedented change and upheaval—but the year 1968 in particular stands out as a dramatic turning point. Americans witnessed the Tet offensive in Vietnam; the shocking assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy; and the chaos at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. At the same time, a young generation was questioning authority like never before—and popular culture, especially music, was being revolutionized. Largely based on unpublished interviews and documents—including in-depth conversations with Eugene McCarthy and Bob Dylan, among many others, and the late Theodore White’s archives, to which the author had sole access—1968 in America is a fascinating social history, and the definitive study of a year when nothing could be taken for granted. “Kaiser aims to convey not only what happened during the period but what it felt like at the time. Affecting touches bring back powerful memories, including strong accounts of the impact of the Tet offensive and of the frenzy aroused by Bobby Kennedy’s race for the presidency.” —The New York Times Book Review
