Book excerpt: “If you want to understand Whetstone, ask Sir Roger Hollis what Palimpsest is.” Just when the National Medical Advisor to the Security Services is on the point of retrieving an injured patient from a hijacked 747 on the tarmac at Heathrow, the authorities pull the plug on a protracted negotiation, with resultant loss of life. Primum non nocere. First do no harm. At the subsequent inquiry, it is the N-MASS, Dr Alastair Cameron-Strange, who is scapegoated, and hung out to dry. Why? Who authorised the storming of Aerolineas Argentinas Flight 301? First minded to quit medicine and get out, sheer bloody-mindedness drives Cameron-Strange to open a file on a high ranking government minister, the Enterprise Czar, erstwhile Managing Director of The Conglomerate, Sir Roger Hollis. His researches take him from London to Edinburgh, thence to the north-west tip of Scotland, where, accompanied by the mysteriously intangible Kathryn Hathaway, he discovers The Conglomerates’s dreadful secret, Palimpsest, and solves the riddle of AA Flight 301. But there’s no way back to London from Cape Wrath. Is there?

Book excerpt: Donald closed his eyes, lifting his chin, and drawing his bushy white eyebrows together importantly. The table waited silently, the glass still. ‘It’s the girl,’ he finally said, ‘she’s here. She wants to communicate with you, Meredith. You lead.’ All eyes turned to Meredith, and she felt the camera train on her face. Heart hammering in her chest, her mind went instantly blank. She struggled to think of anything she was supposed to say. Get a grip, Meredith, you’re on camera. The girl wants to speak to you, so treat her like any other child. The only difference is that this one is dead. Just a minor detail, right? ‘OMG. Haunted was fantastic, I couldn’t put it down!’ Done with therapy and desperate for change, Meredith Knight fakes a parapsychology degree and takes a job as a presenter on a locational shoot in Scotland. Part respite from the constraints of caring for her alcoholic mother, part crash course in dealing with the dead, Meredith hopes to dampen her fear and gain the confidence to find out what her dead sister wants. Maybe then Eve will leave for good, and her mother can stay dry. Maybe then she can live a normal life. But as the pressure of the shoot increases, Meredith is left with far more questions than answers, and she struggles to grasp the truth she desperately needs. With her mother in a downward spiral at home, and Eve’s presence intensifying into a claustrophobic malevolence desperate for attention, Meredith is no longer frustrated, she begins to feel haunted, watched, and afraid. 800 miles from home, terrified and alone, Meredith begins to feel she has made a catastrophic mistake. Shadows seen from the corner of her eye, a sinister form that materialises behind the curtains, the reappearance of a childhood teddy bear she would rather forget, and unearthly voicemails left on her phone are setting her nerves on edge. As Eve’s horrifying story closes in there is no escape, Meredith is forced to deal with what really happened to her sister all those years ago. What she uncovers destroys the very foundation of her own dysfunctional childhood, and for the first time in her life she begins to question not only whether she can trust those around her, but whether she can trust herself. ‘Haunted really had me gripped, I didn’t see the end coming.’

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over three decades Michael Nyman's music has succeeded in reaching beyond the small community of contemporary music aficionados to a much wider range of listeners. An important element in unlocking the key to Nyman's success lies in his writings about music, which preoccupied him for over a decade from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. During this time Nyman produced over 100 articles, covering almost every conceivable musical style and genre - from the Early Music revival and the West's interest in 'world' music, or from John Cage and minimalism to rock and pop. Nyman initiated a number of landmark moments in the course of late twentieth-century music along the way: he was one of the first to critique the distinction between the European avant-garde and the American experimental movement; he was the first to coin the term 'minimalism' in relation to the music of (then largely unknown) Steve Reich and Terry Riley, and later Philip Glass; the first to seriously engage with the music of the English experimental tradition and the importance of Cornelius Cardew, and to identify the importance of Art Colleges in nurturing and developing a radical alternative to modernism; and one of the first writers to grasp the significance of post-minimalists such as Brian Eno and Harold Budd, and to realize how these elements could be brought together into a new aesthetic vision for his own creative endeavours, which was formulated during the late 1970s and early 80s. Much of what transformed and defined Nyman's musical character may be found within the pages of this volume of his writings, comprehensively edited and annotated for the first time, and including previously unpublished material from Nyman's second interview with Steve Reich in 1976. There is also much here to engage the minds of those who are interested in pre-twentieth century music, from Early and Baroque music (Handel and Purcell in particular) to innovative features in Haydn, spatial elements in Berlioz, or Bruckner and Mahler's symphonic works.

Book excerpt: Carol Ann Duffy has been a bold and original voice in British poetry since the publication of Standing Female Nude in 1985. Since then she has won every major poetry prize in the United Kingdom and sold over one million copies of her books around the world. She was appointed Poet Laureate in 2009. Her first Collected Poems includes all of the poems from her nine acclaimed volumes of adult poetry - from Standing Female Nude to Ritual Lighting - as well as her much-loved Christmas poems, which celebrate aspects of Christmas: from the charity of King Wenceslas to the famous truce between the Allies and the Germans in the trenches in 1914. Endlessly varied, wonderfully inventive, and emotionally powerful, the poems in this book showcase Duffy's full poetic range: there are poems written in celebration and in protest; public poems and deeply personal ones; poems that are funny, sexy, heartbroken, wise. Taken together they affirm her belief that 'poetry is the music of being human'. Collected Poems is both the perfect single-volume introduction for new readers and a glorious opportunity for old friends to celebrate thirty years' work by one of the country's greatest literary talents. It confirms indisputably that 'Carol Ann Duffy is the most humane and accessible poet of our time' (Rose Tremain, Guardian).

Book excerpt: I remember very well few of the things of my days at Blairmont when I was a four year old. One of those I looked forward to was when I finished school in the afternoon, I would walk back home and stop out at my Dad’s office where he would stand outside waiting for me to give me a rubber band. That in those days was for me a special kind of toy to play with forever. My Dad was then working as a chemist in the plantation laboratory. They checked for sugar quality and content in the cane grown in the plantation. The way back from school was interesting. From school I walk for a few minutes on a narrow road on both sides of which was nicely cut grass to a high bridge, over a canal. The grassed, green area has on one side a big grocery store, run by my parents’ friend. They had several children- one or two of them were already married. On the other side of the green area was a rum-shop -in a prominent location. Not far away was the ‘pay office’ where people went on Saturday to get their pay. Past the high bridge ahead was the locomotive train line. That ran from the sugar factory to a stelling on the riverside. From there boats would carry sugar from the factory to Georgetown and from there into larger boats to England. Past the train line on one side is the large single story office building in a large open lawned area. Opposite, set in an open lawned area surrounded by medium height trees for privacy, was the majestic three-storey General Manager’s house. Past that, I turn left into a road leading to Dad’s workplace. On one side of that road was the plantation’s senior staff club house with lawn tennis court. On the other side was their swimming pool, screened by trees. Further along past Dad’s office, was the plantation hospital. After that a straight road, with houses on both sides to our house, the last one.

Held every summer at the Royal Albert Hall in London, it is one of the strongest brand names in the music world and attracts a glittering array of artists and orchestras from the UK and around the world. Whether you're a first-time visitor or an experienced Prommer, watching at home or listening on radio or online, the BBC Proms Guide is an excellent companion to the festival, which you can treasure and return to in years to come. Filled with concert listings and articles by leading writers, the BBC Proms Guide offers an insight into the performers and repertoire, as well as thought-provoking opinion pieces about music, musicians and music-making. The contents for 2023 include a specially commissioned short story by Man Booker Prize-nominated author Madeleine Thien; an exploration of the mysterious art of conducting; and an investigation of the connections between music and the human body and spirit – including a 'mental health' Proms playlist. We celebrate the unashamedly Romantic and nostalgically bittersweet music of Sergey Rachmaninov, 150 years after his death; we throw the spotlight on Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Dora Pejacevic, Croatia's first major woman composer; and we delve into the sonic space dust of experimental legend György Ligeti, whose music Stanley Kubrick used to other-worldly effect in 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut. Plus, hear from an array of Proms artists in our series of Spotlight interviews.

In the fourth edition of Dmitri Shostakovich Catalogue: The First Hundred Years and Beyond, Derek C. Hulme names and describes all known musical compositions of the Russian composer. More than 175 major works are annotated and discussed, including such comprehensive details as titles and subtitles, dates of composition, instrumentation, and duration; information on dedications and premieres; arrangements by the composer and others; publication details; notes on bibliographical references and the location of the autograph score; and comprehensive chronological lists of vinyl, compact disc, and visual recordings. The entries are presented chronologically and by opus number, while indexes of names and compositions provide full accessibility. Several appendixes supplement the volume, guiding readers to further information in published sources and providing information on the composer's film, radio, television, and theatre productions; his abandoned projects and obscure works; and his recordings, including box sets and special USSR recordings. An appendix also discusses the monogram DSCH, a musical motif based on his name that permeates his compositions. This new edition also includes a comprehensive chronological chart of Shostakovich's works and historical events and several plates of memorabilia.

Book excerpt: Some people may think romance is dead. It isnt; it has just changed, along with the society we inhabit. Though this story would be viewed as a gay romance, that is not my main motivation in writing this book. It is intended to explore relationships in general. All relationships are different and unique. What is it that makes them work or not work? Synergy explores relationships through observations and comments via the many conversations and personal introspections and reflections of the two main characters. The two central characters are an aging, very private, and semi-introverted Australian writer and a handsome young Spanish artist. Their personal histories, environments, family influences, and important life experiences are explored and discussed. What shaped these two people into who they now are? Why does their unlikely relationship seem to work so well? When by all reasonable logic, it most probably shouldnt. This is the second volume in a trilogy. It continues on from the first published volume, Serendipity, where they meet on the Greek Island of Skopelos and are rapidly drawn together in a surprising and unforeseen set of circumstances. Synergy follows their developing and deepening relationship as they travel extensively. First in Spain, where they marry; then to London, for an exhibition of the artists works; Australia; and finally sail from Spain back to their new villa on Skopelos. There is the occasional glitch and questioning concerning their relationship, but it ends quite positively as the two move into and set up their new villa overlooking the magnificent Aegean Sea. The continuation and evolution of their story and relationship in the third volume is alluded to in the last chapter. Each volume is written as a separate and complete story that may be read on their own or in sequence. Murray James
