Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Catechism Secondly, a Catechism should contain the doc trines held by the Church, not partially or loosely joined together, but arranged in a clear and con cise manner, embracing, as an organic whole, all that is essential to the Christian faith. The various doctrines Of the Bible have a most intimate and inseparable connection, one with another, and this inter-dependence ought to be made plain to the catechumen by deducing each chapter from the One preceding, and applying the same principle to the consecutive questions. What doctrines may be omitted in a Catechism is a matter in no wise optional. A proper Catechism will convey the nu mistakable impression Of being complete, of con taining all that is essential to the Christian faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition in the Form of Question and Answer of the Westminster Assembly's Shorter Catechism One of the best commentaries on the Catechism is that entitled A concise system of theology on the basis of the Shorter Catechism, by Alexander Smith Paterson. The author died in the year 1828, being in the 25th year of his age. He was a student of theology under the care of the Church of Scotland, and in order to prepare for ex amination before the Presbytery he drew up this admira ble survey of the Shorter Catechism. Thus it appears that he who applies himself to the study of the Shorter Catechism may obtain at little ex pense very satisfactory aid in that pursuit. Tributary to the same end will be found various expositions of the Westminster Confession of Faith and of the Larger Cate chism which have appeared. One of the best works in Systematic Theology is a treatise by Thomas Ridgley, D.D. (1667 which is simply an exposition Of the Larger Catechism, and, therefore, virtually of the Shorter Catechism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Larger Catechism of the Doctrines, History, and Polity of the Methodist Protestant Church This little volume claims no originality of thought. It is an humble attempt to collect and arrange a brief and simple Outline Of the principal doctrines of the Methodist Protestant Church, as the author learned them from the fathers and the doctrinal standards recognized by the denomination; together with some Of the leading facts connected with the history Of Methodism and Of the Methodist Protestant Church; and a full and complete view of the polity or system of government adopted by the Church. When a person gets a clear outline of any subject, it greatly assists him in Obtaining a fuller and more comprehensive view of it in detail. Such an out line, except as it relates to the polity Of the Church, is all that is contemplated here. It is presumed that even this brief view will be valuable to members Of the Church who may not care to extend their investigations further, and that it will be useful in giving those who have no knowledge of our Church, a pretty correct idea of its doctrinal views, its origin and present condition, and its republican system of church government. The author can not but think that it will also be useful to young men entering the ministry in our Church, and convenient for even Older ones. Book excerpt: Of the three documents that comprise the Westminster Standards, the Larger Catechism has been the most neglected, even by conservative Presbyterians who profess to embrace these Standards. J. G. Vos wrote a series of studies of the Larger Catechism that first appeared in Blue Banner Faith and Life (1946-49) and has never circulated widely. G. I. Williamson has edited Vos's commentary, and P&R is publishing it in book form for the first time. Because the Larger Catechism supplements the Shorter Catechism on such topics as the church and the means of grace, Presbyterians dare not ignore it. This edition of J. G. Vos's commentary will encourage a recommitment to the Larger Catechism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Confession of Faith: With Questions for Theological Students and Bible Classes Dr. Mitchell proves that the Confession was conformed in the order of its chapters and the type Of its doctrine more to the Articles of the Irish Church than to any other model. These were drawn up by Archbishop Ussher in 1615, when he was pro fessor of divinity in Trinity College, Dublin. The correspond ence of the Larger Catechism is also very striking with the Body of Christian Doctrine, a compilation attributed to Ussher when a youth, and circulated in the Westminster Assembly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Larger Catechism stands as one of the three major doctrinal standards produced by the Westminster Assembly. Often overshadowed by the Shorter Catechism and the Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism exhibits the Assembly's most mature theological reflection and insight. In this remarkable volume, John Bower provides extensive historical background for the making of this colossal catechism. He traces the history of the Assembly's efforts from the initial call for a catechism, through deliberations on its form and content, and down to the intricate process of monitoring its printing. The centerpiece of the volume is Bower's critical text of the catechism. Painstakingly checked and indexed, the critical text is supported by a four-column comparison of the authoritative manuscripts and printings. Graced with a glossary and a catalog of corrected proof-texts, Bower's text is sure to be the benchmark for future study, modern editions, and foreign translations for years to come. This is the initial volume of the Principal Documents of the Westminster Assembly series. Table of Contents: Introduction: The Making of the Catechism 1. One Catechism for Three Kingdoms 2. Exact and Comprehensive: A New Catechism 3. Completing the Work 4. Manuscripts and Editions 5. Critical Editing Methods and Conventions A Critical Edition of the Larger Catechism Authoritative Texts: A Parallel Column Comparison Series Description Principal Documents of the Westminster Assembly series presents the six chief works authored by the Westminster Assembly for establishing covenanted uniformity of religion in England: the Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism, the Shorter Catechism, the Directory for Public Worship, the Directory for Church Government, and the Psalter. Each volume will contain a historical introduction, the critical text, and parallel columns comparing original manuscripts and authoritative editions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks for Bible Classes and Private Students If an assembly Of philosophers had been convened at Athens to compose a catechism Of religion and morals for the youth Of Greece, to a certainty it would have Opened with the very question before us. For almost all the dialogues and discussions Of the fathers Of moral philosophy revolve around this supreme and everlasting question, What is the final cause and chief end Of man? Moral philosophy can put this question, but it is a theology drawn from the Holy Scriptures that can alone supply the answer Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him for ever. It has Often been pointed out, that full as the Shorter Catechism is Of ripe Christian doctrine, it is at the same time cast into a thoroughly scholastic shape. The Westminster Divines who drew this document were deeply read and scholarly men. It' is perhaps new to some of our readers to be told, that the profound distinctions Of an Aristotle and a Bacon are employed in the construction Of that humble primer called The Shorter Catechism (macfarlane's Preface to Paterson's Catechism). Man's chief end chief and highest end (larger Catechism). Our well-known word end most commonly carries the sense Of a limit, a boundary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catechism of Church History: From the Day of Pentecost Until the Present Day This Catechism, of which the former editions were all published in America, is intended to give to Bible-classes, and the older pupils in Sunday Schools, some acquaintance with Sacred History subsequent to the formation of the Church of Christ; to show the continuity of the Church to our own times; and to enable them to read with greater intelligence larger Histories of the Church, if they have the desire and opportunity of pursuing this most important study. But, while it is thus introductory in its nature, it is so arranged, and interspersed with brief biographies, that the learner may carry away with him a very fair knowledge of the subject in an intelligent and lasting manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heidelberg Catechism: In Its Newest Light This work on the Heidelberg catechism is intended to give the new light that has been thrown on the cate chism, mainly within the last fifty years, -since the Ter centenary Jubilee was held, in 1863, by the Reformed Church in the United States. However, it also includes some light previous to that time, but which does not seem to have attracted the attention of the American writers on the catechism. A number of the chapters have been delivered as Addresses during the 3soth Anniversary of the Catechism. The form of address, therefore, appears in a number of places, especially in the last two chapters. Because de livered as Addresses, there is occasionally a reduplication of thought and expression.
