Book Synopsis On Being Adjacent to Historical Violence by : Irene Kacandes
Download or read book On Being Adjacent to Historical Violence written by Irene Kacandes and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers to academic and general public readers timely reflections about our relationships to violence. Taking cues from the self-reflexivity, themes, and subject matters of Holocaust, queer, and Black studies, this large group of diverse intellectuals wrestles with questions that connect past, present and future: where do I stand in relation to violence? What is my attitude toward that adjacency? Whose story gets to be told by whom? What story do I take this image to be telling? How do I co-witness to another’s suffering? How do I honor the agency and resilience of family members or historical personages? How do past violence and injustice connect to the present? In smart, self-conscious, passionate, and often painfully beautiful prose, cultural practitioners, historians and cultural studies scholars such as Angelika Bammer, Doris Bergen, Ann Cvetkovich, Marianne Hirsch, Priscilla Layne, Mark Roseman, Leo Spitzer, Susan R. Suleiman and Viktor Witkowski explore such questions, inviting readers to do the same. By making available compelling examples of thinkers performing their own work within the cauldron of crises that came to a boil in 2020 and continued into the next year, this volume proposes strategies for moving forward with hope.

Book Synopsis Greenwich Village Catholics by : Thomas J. Shelley
Download or read book Greenwich Village Catholics written by Thomas J. Shelley and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jay Dolan transformed the writing of American Catholic history a quarter-century ago by telling the story from the bottom up instead of from the top down. In recent years a number of parish histories have appeared that reflect and expand this new methodology. They successfully relate the life of a local faith community to the larger religious and secular world of which it is a part, and reciprocally illuminate that bigger world from the perspective of this local community. St. Joseph's Church in Greenwich Village offers a fruitful opportunity for this kind of history. During the life span of this parish, the Catholic community in New York City has grown from a mere thirty or forty thousand to over three million in two dioceses. St. Joseph's Church began as a poor immigrant parish in a hostile Protestant environment, developed into a prosperous working-class parish as the area became predominantly Catholic, survived a series of local economic and social upheavals, and remains today a vibrant spiritual center in the midst of an overwhelmingly secular neighborhood. Its history provides a fascinating glimpse of the evolution of Catholicism in New York City during the course of the past 175 years. The history of this parish is worth telling for its own sake as the collective journey of one faith community from immigrant mission to pillar of society and then to spiritual outpost in the Secular City. However, it has significance far beyond the boundaries of Greenwich Village because it documents at the most basic and vital level of Catholic communal organization the interaction between change and continuity that has been one of the most prominent features of urban Catholicism in the United States over the past two centuries.

Book Synopsis John Paul II in the Holy Land-- in His Own Words by : Yehezkel Landau
Download or read book John Paul II in the Holy Land-- in His Own Words written by Yehezkel Landau and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pope John Paul II has been the undisputed leader in fostering Jewish-Christian dialogue for over twenty-five years. He has labored intensely to change the hearts and minds of both sides and has never been afraid to acknowledge the sins committed by Christian people against Jews. His visit to the Middle East in March 2000, when he was able to visit the places where Jesus had lived and walked, was a moving and extraordinarily rich experience, both for him personally and for the Catholic Church. However, it also gave rise to a certain amount of rumor and misunderstanding among Jewish, Christian, and Muslim residents of the region. This book addresses these doubts and suspicions by documenting the pope's itinerary and recording the speeches that the pope gave at each stop along the journey. Replete with commentaries by Yehezkel Landau of Hartford Seminary and Michael McGarry of the Tantur Ecumenical Institute, along with maps and photos, this book is a historical record of a most historic pilgrimage."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
