The total amount of appropriations requested by each State department will be transmitted as requested with out revision. The departmental studies made by the newly created bureau set up by the Board of Estimate and Control were not completed in time to be available for a revision of the requests before submitting them to the Legislature. Indeed, those studies are still incomplete. Detailed reports of examinations, with the comments thereon by department heads, are available for the information of the Legislature. Book Synopsis William Van Alen, Fred T. Ley and the Chrysler Building by : George C. Kingston
Download or read book William Van Alen, Fred T. Ley and the Chrysler Building written by George C. Kingston and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chrysler Building was the result of a remarkable collaboration between William Van Alen, a dreamer whose designs challenged orthodox architecture, and Fred T. Ley, a practical builder who turned dreams into reality. Together they realized Walter P. Chrysler's vision of an iconic structure that would (for 11 months) be the tallest building in the world. Van Alen is recognized as one of the most innovative architects of the 20th century. Ley rose from rod man on a survey team to head one of the largest construction companies in the world. Both men participated in the architectural revolution brought about by steel frame, curtain wall construction. This book chronicles how they designed and constructed the Chrysler Building and how the experience affected the rest of their lives.
Book Synopsis Race and Real Estate by : Kevin McGruder
Download or read book Race and Real Estate written by Kevin McGruder and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the lens of real estate transactions from 1890 to 1920, Kevin McGruder offers an innovative perspective on Harlem's history and reveals the complex interactions between whites and African Americans at a critical time of migration and development. During these decades Harlem saw a dramatic increase in its African American population, and although most histories speak only of the white residents who met these newcomers with hostility, this book uncovers a range of reactions. Although some white Harlem residents used racially restrictive real estate practices to inhibit the influx of African Americans into the neighborhood, others believed African Americans had a right to settle in a place they could afford and helped facilitate sales. These years saw Harlem change not into a "ghetto," as many histories portray, but into a community that became a symbol of the possibilities and challenges black populations faced across the nation. This book also introduces alternative reasons behind African Americans' migration to Harlem, showing that they came not to escape poverty but to establish a lasting community. Owning real estate was an essential part of this plan, along with building churches, erecting youth-serving facilities, and gaining power in public office. In providing a fuller, more nuanced history of Harlem, McGruder adds greater depth in understanding its development and identity as both an African American and a biracial community.
Book Synopsis A History of Housing in New York City by : Richard Plunz
Download or read book A History of Housing in New York City written by Richard Plunz and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its emergence in the mid-nineteenth century as the nation's "metropolis," New York has faced the most challenging housing problems of any American city, but it has also led the nation in innovation and reform. The horrors of the tenement were perfected in New York at the same time that the very rich were building palaces along Fifth Avenue; public housing for the poor originated in New York, as did government subsidies for middle-class housing. A standard in the field since its publication in 1992, A History of Housing in New York City traces New York's housing development from 1850 to the present in text and profuse illustrations. Richard Plunz explores the housing of all classes, with comparative discussion of the development of types ranging from the single-family house to the high-rise apartment tower. His analysis is placed within the context of the broader political and cultural development of New York City. This revised edition extends the scope of the book into the city's recent history, adding three decades to the study, covering the recent housing bubble crisis, the rebound and gentrification of the five boroughs, and the ecological issues facing the next generation of New Yorkers. More than 300 illustrations are integrated throughout the text, depicting housing plans, neighborhood changes, and city architecture over the past 130 years. This new edition also features a foreword by the distinguished urban historian Kenneth T. Jackson.
