Book excerpt: This remarkable first novel from award-winning short fiction writer Ken Scholes will take readers away to a new world—an Earth so far in the distant future that our time is not even a memory; a world where magick is commonplace and great areas of the planet are impassable wastes. But human nature hasn't changed through the ages: War and faith and love still move princes and nations. In Lamentation, the first entry in the Psalm of Isaak series, an ancient weapon has completely destroyed the city of Windwir. From many miles away, Rudolfo, Lord of the Nine Forest Houses, sees the horrifying column of smoke rising. He knows that war is coming to the Named Lands. Nearer to the Devastation, a young apprentice is the only survivor of the city—he sat waiting for his father outside the walls, and was transformed as he watched everyone he knew die in an instant. Soon all the Kingdoms of the Named Lands will be at each others' throats, as alliances are challenged and hidden plots are uncovered. Book Synopsis The Lamentation over the Destruction of Ur by : Nili Samet
Download or read book The Lamentation over the Destruction of Ur written by Nili Samet and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to present a revised edition of the Sumerian Lamentation over the Destruction of Ur, a lament bewailing the fall of the glorious Ur III kingdom in 2004 B.C.E. Lamentation is a well-known genre in world literature. Laments of various types are part of the cultural legacy and literary corpus of many societies, from ancient to modern times, and Sumerian literature is no exception. However, Mesopotamian lamentation literature includes a significant body of laments belonging to a unique and almost unparalleled genre—the genre of lamentations over the destruction of cities and temples. This genre has no known ancient parallel outside the ancient Near East; more specifically, it is almost exclusively attested in Sumerian and biblical literature. The Lamentation over the Destruction of Ur is the most famous and important exemplar of the city-laments. In this updated and revised publication of the Lamentation over the Destruction of Ur, Samet provides an introductory discussion of Sumerian city-laments in general; a full presentation of the text of the Ur Lament, including transliteration, translation, and an extensive philological commentary; and an accounting of the extant textual witness in score format. Plates with color photos of many texts are included.

This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 1672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Diamond and Clines' introduction to and concise commentary on Jeremiah and Lamentations. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.

Book Synopsis A Larger Hope?, Volume 1 by : Ilaria L. E. Ramelli
Download or read book A Larger Hope?, Volume 1 written by Ilaria L. E. Ramelli and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the minds of some, universal salvation is a heretical idea that was imported into Christianity from pagan philosophies by Origen (c.185-253/4). Ilaria Ramelli argues that this picture is completely mistaken. She maintains that Christian theologians were the first people to proclaim that all will be saved and that their reasons for doing so were rooted in their faith in Christ. She demonstrates that, in fact, the idea of the final restoration of all creation (apokatastasis) was grounded upon the teachings of the Bible and the church's beliefs about Jesus' total triumph over sin, death, and evil through his incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. Ramelli traces the Christian roots of Origen's teaching on apokatastasis. She argues that he was drawing on texts from Scripture and from various Christians who preceded him, theologians such as Bardaisan, Irenaeus, and Clement. She outlines Origen's often-misunderstood theology in some detail and then follows the legacy of his Christian universalism through the centuries that followed. We are treated to explorations of Origenian universal salvation in a host of Christian disciples, including Athanasius, Didymus the Blind, the Cappadocian fathers, Evagrius, Maximus the Confessor, John Scotus Eriugena, and Julian of Norwich.

Book Synopsis Volume 1 of Ezekiel's Story - The Whirlwind by : Robert Fodge
Download or read book Volume 1 of Ezekiel's Story - The Whirlwind written by Robert Fodge and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Ezekiel contains unique information about God's chosen people. The whole scope of God's love, sovereignty, power, omniscience, righteousness, mercy, anger, wrath and judgment towards saved, but rebellious people is revealed. God's treatment of His chosen people is a model of the way that He treats with saved, but rebellious individuals. In 1 Pet 4:17-18, Peter said, "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?" Ezekiel's story of the whirlwind is the account of the reason for God's judgment of the nation of Israel, and corresponds perfectly with Peter's statement that "judgment must begin at the house of God." That nation was outwardly committed to God. They maintained that they trusted in God but they were guilty of being like neighboring nations.
Book Synopsis Brenton's Septuagint, Restored Names Version, Volume 1 by : Clinton R Smith
Download or read book Brenton's Septuagint, Restored Names Version, Volume 1 written by Clinton R Smith and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Septuagint is the only extant Greek translation from a Hebrew MSS that is currently lost to us. The Greek Septuagint and its Autograph, were extensively used before the Christian era as has been testified to by historians and many similarities manifest in the Dead Sea Scrolls. During the age of the Messiah and the Apostles it appears they exclusively used either the Greek Septuagint or its Autograph as is demonstrated by the parallels found in their quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures [O.T]. The Septuagint persevered into the age of the early Church Fathers where after it inexplicably fell into disuse. This is a fresh approach to Sir Brenton's translation, in that this it restores the original Hebrew Names as found in the Masoretic Text. While this approach may seem like a glaring paradox it may however be reasoned that a more satisfying though not perfect English translation has subsequently evolved.
Book Synopsis Scripture in Context II by : William W. Hallo
Download or read book Scripture in Context II written by William W. Hallo and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 1983 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the summers of 1978 and 1980, William W. Hallo directed two National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars, both of which had the title: 'Biblical History in its Near Eastern Setting.' These seminars, conducted at Yale University, have now resulted in two related collections of essays. This second collection, Scripture in Context II, had its origins in the 1980 seminar. Both seminars investigated in chronological sequence the major phases of ancient Near Eastern history and focused on the history, literary traditions, and religion of ancient Israel within the context of her cultural environs. A major concern was to recognize and explore the implications of the way in which the native biblical and extra-biblical literary traditions rendered account of themselves. The methodology followed in the seminars and the resulting essays is the contextual approach. This approach to the study of biblical history, literature, and religion is concerned not only to discover illuminating and insightful parallels between biblical and extrabiblical sources, but also to note and recognize the implications of significant and important differences."--Jacket.
