Book Synopsis The State and Women in the Economy by : Jean Larson Pyle
Download or read book The State and Women in the Economy written by Jean Larson Pyle and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1990-10-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the effect of state policies on womens roles in the economy. At the most concrete level it investigates the relative lack of response of womens labor force activity rates to export-led development in the Republic of Ireland. At a broader level, it provides critical insights into current labor market debates regarding the causes of womens subordination and the efficacy of state policies designed to alleviate them. The book shows how the state, in addition to and interactively with the workplace and household, can maintain gender inequality. In so doing, Pyle demonstrates the usefulness of a revitalized and broader structural approach to feminist analysis.

Book excerpt: "The richness of Krishna Ahoojapatel's analysis of the connections between women and the economy comes from the diversity of her engagements as a UN policymaker, an academic and an activist. Her analysis is therefore multidimensional. It is not a historical work, but captures four decades of changes in policies, in paradigms and in women's lives. It is rare to see such different strands come together in one person and one book." -Vandana Shiva, Founder/Director, Research Foundation of Science, Technology & Ecology, New Dehli.

Book excerpt: The author studies affirmative action efforts in four countries: two superpowers - the United States and the Soviet Union - and two non-superpowers - Canada and Hungary. Drawing on his knowledge of diverse societies, the author weighs the evidence to evaluate whether popular pressure for affirmative action is greater in the superpower than in the non-superpower nations. The book presents facts about the nature and historic development of state policy in the advanced capitalist and socialist countries, and raises insights that run counter to the common wisdom.
Book Synopsis Early Child Education by : David K. Evans
Download or read book Early Child Education written by David K. Evans and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012-06-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past fifteen years, Brazil has made great strides in increasing its population's access to early child education, with both preschool and creche enrollment increasing by over fifty percent. Education programs for young children have consistently been shown to have long-term positive effects on life outcomes of participants. In Brazil, these programs have demonstrated positive impacts on, for example, income, length of schooling, and test scores. However, the quality of pre-schools and creches is essential in achieving these improvements, and even in capital cities, very few centers are rated as high-quality centers. Representation of the poorest and most vulnerable children among those attending pre-school and creche still lags considerably behind that of more privileged children, although poorer children stand to gain the most from early child education programs. Additionally, large rural-urban and regional disparities exist. This book details the literature on the effects of early child education and the importance of quality, and gives a comprehensive view of the quality, regional, and socioeconomic gaps in early child education in Brazil. It further examines existing public and private initiatives in Brazil, and discusses how they can be leveraged to effectively and efficiently provide quality pre-school and creche care. A central aim of the book is to provide policymakers with specific recommendations of policies to improve the quality and equity of the early child education experience in Brazil. Given the difficulty in reaching children in remote areas and the need to expand coverage to the poorest segments of the population, Brazil will need to be strategic in how and where it invests. It should target new centers and allocate existing spaces to the poorest people and areas. Municipal policymakers should allocate public spaces in a transparent manner, provide guidelines to institutions, and monitor them. Teachers need guidance on the best activities to use, to improve child outcomes. The use of participatory budgeting could potentially improve access and equity by involving the poor directly in the budgeting process. Increased cross-sectoral coordination could improve child welfare in cost-effective ways, and public-private partnerships could stretch existing resources further and expand coverage more quickly.
