In the worlds of their dominion they are called the Fylking, lovers of strife, song and steel, an immortal race of warriors akin to the Otherworld. Their empires span the heavens; their deities, ruled by the elusive Raven God, embody the forces of war, wisdom, passion and nature. This series tells the exploits of the Fylking and their mortal observers — warriors, royals, seers, lovers, warlocks and mercenaries — generations upon generations coexisting in uneasy peace with the Gods of War. This omnibus edition includes both books in the series, Outpost and The Wolf Lords. Also includes a glossary and a link to a high resolution map. “The tone is excellent, reminiscent of some of the earliest examples of grim Norse fantasy.” – G.R. Matthews, Fantasy Faction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a snowy evening, South London. From a bus, Max Wolf and his brother Angelo see a gang ominously tracking a well-known rapper, Mogul King, through the dark streets. Minutes later, Mogul King boards the bus, presses a parcel into Max's hands, exacts an incomprehensible promise, and jumps off again - to his death. The parcel contains an extraordinary ancient bronze dagger, and within hours Max is running for his own life through London, his brother, Angelo, is dead, apparently the victim of a gang drive-by shooting, and his friend, Sapphire, is next on the hit list. But everything is not as it seems. Everything leads the British Museum. Everything began with the ill-fated British Punitive Expedition of 1897 and the looting of the fabulous Benin Bronzes from Nigeria over a hundred years ago. In an intriguing dual storyline, Max's racing first person narrative story is offset by a scrap book of letters, memoirs, drawings, photos and journal entries, by one Hugh Hardy, Gunner aboard the Theseus, and foot soldier on that ruinous expedition over a century ago.

Book excerpt: The startling and controversial memoir of combat and betrayal, written by one of the most prominent members of the U.S. fighting forces in Iraq A West Point graduate, a former star quarterback who carried Army to its first bowl victory, and a courageous warrior who had proven himself on the battlefield time and again, Lt. Col. Nathan Sassaman was one of the most celebrated officers in the United States military. He commanded more than eight hundred soldiers in the heart of the insurgency-ravaged Sunni Triangle in Iraq, and his unit's job was to seek out and eliminate terrorists and loyalists to Saddam Hussein, while simultaneously rebuilding the region's infrastructure and introducing democratic processes to a broken people. Sassaman's tactics were highly aggressive, his methods innovative, and his success in Iraq nearly unparalleled. Yet Sassaman will always be known for a fateful decision to cover up the alleged drowning of an Iraqi by his men, in which they purportedly forced two detainees to jump into the Tigris River. The army initially charged three soldiers with manslaughter and a fourth with assault---the first time troops who served in Iraq have been charged with a killing in connection with the handling of detainees. Sassaman's decision led to his downfall, despite an impressive career, and sent shock waves through the American military. This controversial decision goes to the heart of the complex fight in Iraq, where key army leaders betray one another, politics in the war room leads to lost lives on the battlefield, and enemy factions routinely sabotage U.S. efforts, making success difficult for American commanders on the battlefield. Warrior King is the explosive memoir of one of the most deeply involved members of the U.S. military in Iraq. This is the first book to take readers from the overnight brutality of combat to the daunting daytime humanitarian tasks of rebuilding Iraq to the upper echelons of the Pentagon to show how and why the war has gone horribly wrong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chögyam Trungpa was born in Tibet and strictly trained in the manner traditional for re-incarnations of great teachers. At the age of 19, he led 300 people over the Himalayas to India in a dramatic escape recounted in his autobiography Born in Tibet. Over the following 30 years, Trungpa became one of the foremost pioneers of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. He was also a highly controversial figure, considered by many to be one of the greatest Buddhist teachers ever to come to the west and viewed with suspicion by others. He taught in a style that went altogether beyond conventional ideas of what a "holy man" should be like, dressing in ordinary western clothes, drinking and taking sexual consorts. He taught in English with a direct and penetrating voice that drew to him many intelligent young students. These memoirs tell the story of the author, Jeremy Hayward, a close student and friend of Trungpa Rinpoche who became a senior teacher and administrator in the organizations Rinpoche established. This intimate chronological account opens with Hayward's first meeting with Trungpa Rinpoche in 1970 and progresses year by year until Rinpoche's death and beyond. Each chapter/year includes some discussion of the teachings that Rinpoche was presenting at that time as well as the context and atmosphere in which these teachings occurred and the evolution of the society and organizations which he inspired. The book should be of interest to all students of Buddhism as well as others interested in the evolution of Buddhism in the west, and possibly other seekers on the spiritual path.

Book excerpt: This hurting world needs men of character and integrity--fathers, leaders, warriors --who will not only take a stand for godliness and righteousness, but who will also raise future generations of godly, righteous men. Where can one find the model for such a man? The answer lies in 1 Chronicles 7:40, with the story of Asher--the kind of godly man that all Christian men should aspire to become. In The Warrior Within, Pat Williams combines solid biblical principles, powerful contemporary stories, and an imaginative narrative of the life of Asher to discover how Christian men can become complete and dynamically effective in the four crucial dimensions of manhood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major reconsideration of the relationship between warrior aristocrats, epics, and heroes in medieval culture. The process of identity formation during the central Middle Ages (10th-12th centuries) among the warrior aristocracy was fundamentally centered on the paired practices of gift giving and violent taking, inextricably linked elements of the same basic symbolic economy. These performative practices cannot be understood without reference to a concept of the sacred, which anchored and governed the performances, providing the goal and rationale of social and military action. After focussing on anthropological theory, social history, and chronicles, the author turns to the "literary" persona of the hero as seen in the epic. He argues that the hero was specifically a narrative touchstone used for reflection on the nature and limits of aggressive identity formation among the medieval warrior elite; the hero can be seen, from a theoretical perspective, as a "supplement" to his own society, who both perfectly incarnated its values but also, in attaining full integrity, short-circuited the very mechanisms of identity formation and reciprocity which undergirded the society. The book shows that the relationship between warriors, heroes, and their opponents (especially Saracens) must be understood as a complex, tri-partite structure - not a simple binary opposition - in which the identity of each constituent depends on the other two. ANDREW COWELL isAssociate Professor of the Department of French and Italian, and the Department of Linguistics, at the University of Colorado.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exegetical and diachronic survey of messianic texts from the Hebrew Bible and Jewish tradition up through the first millennium CE. Jewish messianism can be traced back to the emerging Kingdom of Judah in the tenth century BCE, when it was represented by the Davidic tradition and the promise of a future heir to David’s throne. From that point, it remained an important facet of Israelite faith, as evidenced by its frequent recurrence in the Hebrew Bible and other early Jewish texts. In preexilic texts, the expectation is for an earthly king—a son of David with certain ethical qualities—whereas from the exile onward there is a transition to a pluriform messianism, often with utopic traits. Warrior, King, Servant, Savior is an exegetical and diachronic study of messianism in these texts that maintains close dialogue with relevant historical research and archaeological insights. Internationally respected biblical scholar Torleif Elgvin recounts the development and impact of messianism, from ancient Israel through the Hasmonean era and the rabbinic period, with rich chapters exploring messianic expectations in the Northern Kingdom, postexilic Judah, and Qumran, among other contexts. For this multifaceted topic—of marked interest to Jews, Christians, and secular historians of religion alike—Elgvin’s handbook is the essential and definitive guide.

Book excerpt: Posthumously inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2007, Richard Durham creatively chronicled and brought to life the significant events of his times. Durham's trademark narrative style engaged listeners with fascinating characters, compelling details, and sharp images of pivotal moments in American and African American history and culture. In Word Warrior , award-winning radio producer Sonja D. Williams draws on archives and hard-to-access family records, as well as interviews with family and colleagues like Studs Terkel and Toni Morrison, to illuminate Durham's astounding career. Durham paved the way for black journalists as a dramatist and a star investigative reporter and editor for the pioneering black newspapers the Chicago Defender and Muhammed Speaks . Talented and versatile, he also created the acclaimed radio series Destination Freedom and Here Comes Tomorrow and wrote for popular radio fare like The Lone Ranger . Incredibly, his energies extended still further--to community and labor organizing, advising Chicago mayoral hopeful Harold Washington, and mentoring generations of activists. Incisive and in-depth, Word Warrior tells the story of a tireless champion of African American freedom, equality, and justice during an epoch that forever changed a nation.
