Book excerpt: "It's all here-Islam, the family tree, a sea of oil and money to match, palace intrigue...This is high drama and an epic tale." -Tom Brokaw Though Saudi Arabia sits on one of the richest oil deposits in the world, it also produced fifteen of the nineteen 9/11 hijackers. In this immensely important book, journalist Robert Lacey draws on years of access to every circle of Saudi society giving readers the fullest portrait yet of a land straddling the worlds of medievalism and modernity. Moving from the bloody seizure of Mecca's Grand Mosque in 1979, through the Persian Gulf War, to the delicate U.S.-Saudi relations in a post 9/11 world, Inside the Kingdom brings recent history to vivid life and offers a powerful story of a country learning how not to be at war with itself.

Book excerpt: By showing how Jesus' teachings relate to our inner depths, this book guides us toward a more conscious and creative life. The Kingdom Within explores the significance of Jesus' teachings for our interior life -- that inner reality that Jesus called "the kingdom of God." It is Sanford's conviction that contemporary Christianity has overlooked this inner dimension of Jesus' teachings and so has lost touch with the human soul. Illustrated with case histories and dream material drawn from the author's work as a psychotherapist, The Kingdom Within examines such characteristics as extroversion and introversion, masculinity and femininity, thinking and feeling, and sensation and intuition to show how Jesus met the criteria of wholeness or fullness of personhood. Step by step, Sanford helps us to shed the outer mask, to eschew sin, which "means living in enslavement to what we don't know about ourselves," and to follow the road of consciousness, which leads to "a great treasure waiting only to be discovered."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kingdom of God is the called out people of God (Col. 1:1314) from the world of darkness as the spiritual family of Christ. The kingdom of God is bound up in the age of grace and truth and is the fulfillment of Gods promise to Abraham to bless all nations of people. The kingdom of God in prophecy started during the Roman rule (Dan. 2:44) with the Jews at Pentecost in Jerusalem (ca. 33 AD) and then to the Gentile world to include our present age. Jesus reigns as Lord and Christ over His church / the kingdom of God in the twenty-first century and continues to call people of every nation to walk with Him by faith, repentance, and baptism in His name until the consummation of all things and His second return. The Christian Age is the eschatology (Last Day events) of Jesuss reign under the leadership of the Holy Spirit through the preached Word. The salvation of the Gentile nations is the final work of God to restore what was lost in heaven through Satan and his angels (Rev. 12:710). When Jesus appears, his reign ends, and the spiritual family and the church of Christ / kingdom of God will go home.

Book excerpt: Why does the allegiance that radical terrorists give to their false cause exceed the allegiance that most Christians today give to Jesus Christ? In Insurgence, bestselling author Frank Viola presents a radical proposal for Christians. Namely, that we have lost the explosive, earthshaking gospel of the kingdom that Jesus, Paul, and the other apostles preached. Viola argues that we've lost this dynamic, titanic, living gospel and exchanged it for a gospel of religious duty or permissiveness and "easy believism." In today's politically charged era, Christians on the progressive left as well as the conservative right both equate their particular viewpoints with the kingdom of God. Viola challenges and dismantles these perspectives, offering a fresh and revolutionary look at the gospel of the kingdom. Viola writes with gripping power, challenging Christians to embrace an unparalleled allegiance to Jesus Christ and his kingdom. This high-octane message is being reclaimed today, launching a spiritual insurgence.

Book excerpt: Nationally known pastor, Bill Winston brings this powerful message of God's provision, healing, and more that is already resident in the believer and available to those who will seek God's direction. If the Kingdom of God is in us, why aren't we living lives of greatness in our world? Bill Winston recognizes that there are two kingdoms at work in this world, and tragically, even within the church, the majority of people are still living under the destructive lies and patterns of Satan's rule. They don't have the power and provisions of God - wisdom, understanding, peace, joy, health, abundant material provision, life-changing ministry, and so much more - because they simply have not recognized the kingdom in them. The promises of God rarely come from some outside sovereign work of God, but from the kingdom already inside. The pastor of one of America's fastest growing churches, Winston helps believers to start walking their faith out in miraculous ways. Why? We have a power within us that is supernatural and flies in the face of the world's arrogant - but ultimately inadequate - self-reliance on human understanding and effort. With the faith of a child, even as small as a mustard seed, we unleash God's provision and power in our lives not by focusing on what we want, but by asking what the King of the Kingdom, God Almighty, wants us to accomplish. We quickly discover that our "grand dreams" and aspirations are miniscule in light of the greatness He has in store for us to do. This book is not for Christians who are complacent and desire the status quo. This is a soul-changing book that will turn the timid into the bold, and result in miracles that will build God's Kingdom right here and right now.

Book excerpt: Describing Tolstoy's crisis of depression and estrangement from the world, A Confession (1879) is an autobiographical work of exceptional emotional honesty. By the time he was fifty, Tolstoy had already written the novels that would assure him of literary immortality; he had a wife, a large estate and numerous children; he was 'a happy man' and in good health - yet life had lost its meaning. In this poignant confessional fragment, he records a period of his life when he began to turn away from fiction and aesthetics, and to search instead for 'a practical religion not promising future bliss, but giving bliss on earth'.

Book excerpt: Building upon past insights, Dr. Rivkin moves forward in recognizing the unique contributions and reconstructing the obscure origins of the Pharisees. Through analysis of the writings of the Jewish historian Josephus, the New Testament, and the body of writings known as the Tannaitic literature, he arrives at a valid identity for the Pharisees: a scholar class dedicated to the supremacy of the twofold Law, the Written and the Oral, who opposed the Sadducees (exponents of the sole authority of the Written Law) and who ultimately made the twofold Law operative in Jewish society. Dr. Rivkin asserts that the essence of the Pharisaic "hidden revolution" was a firm and unwavering belief in a triadic doctrine that elevated the individual above the cultic system and made salvation an individual rather than a group matter. In this way, the Pharisees paved the way for Christianity and Islam.

How do we see through his eyes? How do we feel through his heart? How do we learn to respond to the world with that same wholeness and healing love? That’s what Christian orthodoxy really is all about. It’s not about right belief; it’s about right practice.” —Cynthia Bourgeault, author of The Wisdom Jesus What does it mean to follow the path of Christ today? Putting on the Mind of Christ is the first book to offer an integral understanding of the Christian spiritual path--one that examines the basic stages of spiritual development described by the great saints and sages, along with the psychological stages of development used by modern psychology. American mystic Jim Marion draws upon his own rich spiritual experience and deep understanding of scriptural models, to show readers how to emulate the developmental stages of the Christ: how to put on the mind of Christ to achieve spiritual illumination and communion with the Christ. He examines the seven levels of consciousness of the human personality mapped by the work of Jean Piaget, Carol Milligan, and Lawrence Kohlberg, and leads readers to the consciousness that Jesus called the Kingdom of Heaven--the highest level of spiritual development. Marion shows how inner spiritual growth has always been the true essence of Christian practice and shares his own spiritual experiences within a "Christ-focused" framework. Pioneering, transcendent, and grounded, Putting on the Mind of Christ will permanently alter the landscape of 21st-century Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is Tolstoy's masterpiece on nonviolence in the first new English translation in decades by Damian Westfall. Also included with A Letter to a Hindu is the complete correspondence between Tolstoy and Gandhi, an introduction by Gandhi and a new preface and epilogue by Damian Westfall the translator. In 1908 Tarak Nath Das, an Indian revolutionary and editor of "Free Hindustan", a magazine published to further the efforts of emancipating the Indians from the British colonial rule, sent Leo Tolstoy two issues of "Free Hindustan" and a letter explaining the oppression and subjugation of the people of India by the English and asked the world famous writer for advice on the best way to achieve freedom from the minority who enslaved 200,000,000 people and on December 14th, 1908, Tolstoy began writing what would be inevitably entitled "A Letter to a Hindu" in Russian, but it was soon translated into English by an anonymous writer and in 1909 Das published "A Letter to a Hindu" in an edition of "Free Hindustan", his magazine. A young lawyer turned activist who worked nonstop for the emancipation of India named Gandhi read Tolstoy's "A Letter to A Hindu" in "Free Hindustan" while living in South Africa where he resided with a population of 30,000 other Indians who were being oppressed and subjugated by the white Christians in the Transvaal province of South Africa. Gandhi was already a follower of Tolstoy after he read and was radicalized by Tolstoy's "The Kingdom of GOD is Within You" and immediately Gandhi knew he wanted to publish "A Letter to a Hindu" in his own magazine "Indian Opinion" that he was printing and distributing from Transvaal. And so, the young Gandhi wrote to Tolstoy to make sure that Tolstoy actually wrote the letter and asked Tolstoy if he, Gandhi Himself, could translate "A Letter to A Hindu" into the Indian dialect Guajarati and this began a correspondence of six letters between Gandhi and Tolstoy which concluded with Tolstoy's death in 1910 at 82 years old. The story of India's nonviolent revolution led by Gandhi is amazing and inspiring, but the reader of "A Letter to a Hindu" doesn't need to know all the details of the Indian problem presented by Tarak Nath, they are not necessary, because the Indian situation is used by Tolstoy only as an example. It is the theories presented by Tolstoy that are the guts of the letter, and at its center is the reason for publishing these texts, Tolstoy's thoughts on the concept of nonresistance to evil by violence (Matthew 5:38-42, Luke 6:27-31) which includes giving good to evil, not retaliating, loving your enemies, and most importantly the order from Christ that if someone slaps your face you should then turn your face so they can hit the other side as well. This is usually referred to as "to turn the other cheek" and it is roundly negated and discarded by most pastors and Christians, but this is a direct command from Christ that cannot be ignored or rejected, and this is the core of Tolstoy's ethics: Nonresistance to Evil by Violence.

Book excerpt: The apostle Matthew recorded the words of Jesus in chapter eleven when Jesus said, "The kingdom of God suffers violence and the violent take it by force!" The revelation of this Scripture is the quintessential order experienced by God's elect as they seek God's Kingdom and His righteousness. This order supports the life experiences of humans on the earth as spoken in God's curse as the results of man's disobedience in the Garden of Eden. Not many Christians understand this order or the spiritual provisions God established in His plan for the world before it was formed. Jesus used the life of John the Baptist to illustrate the character one must have in seeking God's Kingdom. John, who by faith and blind devotion, surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and to God's Kingdom. Jesus said in verse eleven, "Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist. John's adult life was characterized by his tenacity to advance the knowledge of Jesus Christ despite the antagonism from Jesus enemies, the religious leaders of His day, the scribes and the Pharisees. John the Baptist was a man filled with love, faith and obedience to Jesus and to God's Word! He was a role model to those of us who seek the Kingdom of God despite the afflictions, hardships and sufferings one must bear! Taking the Kingdom by force refers to those who make a concerted effort to enter the kingdom in spite of violent opposition. This opposition comes in many forms including our carnal mind, which is enmity against God and the lust of our own human flesh. Individuals seeking the Kingdom must display certain character traits as revealed in this book, "The Kingdom of God Suffers Violence!" Unfortunately, not many Christian leaders have been privy to this revelation or its purpose in those God predestinated, called, justified and glorified before the world was made. However, in the fullness of time, these truths are being made known. As you read this book, please seek God's wisdom and understanding in order to rightly discern its contents.
