A young man named Jasper discovers a young joey kangaroo one day while out on a hunt and saves it from the dingoes. After rescuing the kangaroo he decides to raise it himself, since the mother had abandoned it. Years later he will be shocked to find out why it was abandoned, since this kangaroo in particular seems to have grown bigger then any kangaroo the boy had ever seen before. Soon the kangaroo outgrows Jasper's shack, so both decide that they should find some place better. The day Jasper mounts Kaylia's back will change his life, for that day he discovered that if you had a way to hold on it was actually possible to mount the kangaroo and ride it. Soon after while in one of the local towns the head of the messenger services in their realm notices Jasper and his mount, and decides that the boy would be able to make a fairly decent messenger. So he inquires the boy about becoming a messenger to run mail and packages around their country of Northern Austra while astride the back of his giant kangaroo. Meanwhile, Jasper also eventually tries to seek out the other giant kangaroos in an effort to be able to eventually release Kaylia, so that she can return to where she belongs and have her freedom as he believes she could. At the time he doesn't believe that she belongs with him, since she should be free and be able to live in the wild. For he knows that if she would have never been attacked by the dingoes that she would have grown up as a wild, and free giant kangaroo. Jasper will do all he can to try to get the chance to release Kaylia back into the wild, if that's even possible. Come along for the ride of your life as a mounted messenger on the back of a kangaroo in The Kangaroo's Messenger.

Book excerpt: Dally Messenger was an Australian sporting superstar in the early years of the 20th century - a rugby league icon, rugby union champion, and the most popular sporting personality of this day. He was courted by all codes in that heady period of the early 1900s, when rugby league and Australian rules were fighting to become the dominant winter sport. He represented Australia in rugby league and rugby union and also represented New Zealand in rugby league. Thousands flocked to the grounds when he was playing, and he his revered as an icon in rugby league to this very day. The Master is a popular and authoritative account of the life and times of a superlative sportsman, a tribute to a rugby league player without peer, and an inspiring story for all those who would marvel at this sporting excellence and outstanding achievements.

Book excerpt: With a twist of fate - and of historical fact - Gallipoli was a military success, Australia had a female prime minister in the 1920s and Gough Whitlam chose his time to retire from the top job. In Victory on Gallipoli and Other What-ifs of Australian History, prominent historians contemplate how Australia today could have been a very different place but for a decision made or not made, an opportunity taken or not taken. These are the nation's sliding door moments, our alternative history. The Cold War had the world teetering on the edge of mutually assured destruction. What if it had heated up? What if the 1951 referendum to outlaw the Communist Party had been successful? Would Australia have had its own McCarthy era and where would we be today? With essays by Janette Bomford, Guy Hansen, Carolyn Holbrook, Walter Kudrycz, Michael McKernan, Ross McMullin, Hamish Maxwell-Stewart, John Maynard, Michael Molkentin, Roslyn Russell, Peter Stanley, Craig Wilcox and Clare Wright.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rugby is New Zealand's national sport. From the grand tour by the 1888 Natives to the upcoming 2015 World Cup, from games in the North African desert in the Second World War to matches behind barbed wire during the 1981 Springbok tour, from grassroots club rugby to heaving crowds outside Eden Park, Lancaster Park, Athletic Park or Carisbrook, New Zealanders have made rugby their game. In this book, historian and former journalist Ron Palenski tells the full story of rugby in New Zealand for the first time. It is a story of how the game travelled from England and settled in the colony, how Maori and later Pacific players made rugby their own, how battles over amateurism and apartheid threatened the sport, how national teams, provinces and local clubs shaped it. The story of rugby is New Zealand's story. Rooted in extensive research in public and private archives and newspapers, and highly illustrated with many rare photographs and ephemera, this book is the defining history of rugby in a land that has made the game its own.

Book excerpt: Rugby has always been a sport with as much drama off the field as on it. For every thrilling last-minute Jonny Wilkinson drop-goal to win the world cup or Jonah Lomu rampage down the touchline for a try, there has been a split, a feud or a controversy. The Oval World is the first full-length history of rugby on a world scale – from its origins in the village-based football games of medieval times up to the globalised sport of the twenty-first century, now played in well over 100 countries. It tells the story of how a game played in an obscure English public school became the winter sport of the British Empire, spread to France, Argentina, Japan and the rest of the world and commanded a global television audience of over four billion for the last world cup final. And how American football – and other games such as Australian, Canadian and Gaelic football – emerged from rugby and highlight just how much the modern gridiron game owes to its English cousin. Featuring the great moments in the game's history and its great names – such as Jonah Lomu, David Duckham, Serge Blanco, Billy Boston and David Campese alongside Rupert Brooke, King George V, Boris Karloff, Charles de Gaulle and Nelson Mandela – The Oval World investigates just what it is about rugby that enables it to survive and thrive in countries with very different traditions and cultures. This is the the definitive world history of a truly global rugby.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IVF and Ever After focuses on IVF treatment, its effects on families and relationships, and how to minimize the stress it causes. A groundbreaking work — no other book deals with the emotional experiences involved in IVF treatment and bringing up an IVF child. • IVF clinics are overflowing with new patients and have little room for the ‘personal touch’ • 80 million couples worldwide couples experience infertility • This book is for couples thinking about IVF treatment, those undergoing treatment, and IVF parents who are experiencing emotional ‘lows’ without knowing why • It is also an invaluable guide for health professionals working with IVF families IVF births make up a highly significant part of the fertility rate. The current overall success rate of IVF is approaching 25 per cent — twice what it was twenty years ago. Experts predict that we will approach a figure of 30 IVF births per 100 births by around 2030. IVF mothers are three times more likely to attend early parenting centers for help. IVF clinicians are now emphasizing to parents that stress plays a sizeable role in treatment success. Research has shown that women undergoing treatment for infertility have a similar level of stress as women dealing with life-threatening illnesses, such as cancer or heart disease. IVF and Ever After discusses the latest international research, bringing together the most up-to-date information for parents. It moves beyond the ‘here and now’ to look at issues families and practitioners rarely consider, such as telling a child about IVF conception, what to do with spare frozen embryos, and the implications of legislation to make surrogacy easier. This is also an essential read for any health professional involved with IVF, who rarely see how families cope away from the clinic, and it will be invaluable for GPs, who are seeing more and more patients who have been affected by IVF.

People passionately pursue these creatures--the name given to their field of study is cryptozoology. Coined in the 1950s, the term literally means the science of hidden animals. When the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) was formed in 1982, the founders declared that the branch of science is also concerned with "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they are not supposed to occur (either now or in the past) as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or to the recent past...what makes an animal of interest to cryptology is that it is unexpected." This reference work presents a "flesh and blood" view of cryptozoology. Here, 2,744 entries are listed, the majority of which each describe one specific creature or type of creature. Other entries cover 742 places where unnamed cryptids are said to appear; profiles of 77 groups and 112 individuals who have contributed to the field; descriptions of objects and events important to the subject; and essays on cryptotourism and hoaxes, for example. Appendices offer a timeline of zoological discoveries, annotated lists of movies and television series with cryptozoological themes, a list of crypto-fiction titles and a list of Internet websites devoted to cryptozoology.
