Dowd tells how the Bushmen, living in the waterless Kalahari desert and having often to go without water for sev eral days, made even this environment yield them liquid. When they came to the dried bed of a river or pond, in pursuit of game, they would take a long reed and make a primitive filter by tying long grass around one end of this tube. They would then push the filter end as deep as possible into the muddy soil, allowing the water to slowly penetrate the filter. Book excerpt: The author of this volume died before it was ready for the press. The illustrations had, most fortunately, been carefully prepared, and they are reproduced by chromolithography, so that they are indistinguishable from the originals, except that most of them have been reduced in size. The manuscript was purchased by Miss Lucy C. Lloyd from Mr. Stow's widow, with the intention of having it published, but other work has prevented that lady from bestowing upon it the time and care needed for its arrangement. In 1904 Miss Lloyd, feeling that a work of such importance ought to be placed before the public without further delay, did the author the honour of submitting the manuscript for the inspection and advice as to what should be done in the matter. Miss Lloyd, who is the greatest living authority upon the Bushmen, attested the accuracy of much in Mr. Stow's description of the customs and mode of life of those people, though she doubted whether his division of that race into the two branches of painters and sculptors could be maintained, thinking it probable that this matter was determined by locality and convenience.

Comprehensive infrastructure development in water and sanitation, the growing trend to seek additional resources in the form of groundwater, desalinated seawater, and recycled wastewater, as well as special attention being given to capturing and preserving rainwater, bear evidence of a timely response to climate change, population growth and rapid development in many water-stressed regions of the world. The purpose of the book is to provide a historical overview of the manner in which South Africa’s water resources have been governed from a time when the Union of South Africa was formed, in 1910, up to 2008, a time of a growing global awareness of the potential impact that climate change may have on water resources in a key region of southern Africa, notable for increasing levels of aridity and more erratic rainfall patterns.
