Book excerpt: The Jungle Book: Large Printby Rudyard Kiplingin the sun. What harm can a naked frog do us? Let him run with the Pack. Where is the bull, Bagheera? Let him be accepted." And then came Akela's deep bay, crying: "Look well--look well, O Wolves!"Mowgli was still deeply interested in the pebbles, and he did not notice when the wolves came and looked at him one by one. At last they all went down the hill for the dead bull, and only Akela, Bagheera, Baloo, and Mowgli's own wolves were left. Shere Khan roared still in the night, for he was very angry that Mowgli had not been handed over to him."Ay, roar well," said Bagheera, under his whiskers, "for the time will come when this naked thing will make thee roar to another tune, or I know nothing of man."We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. The Jungle Book, published in 1894, is a collection of tales that have delighted readers, young and old, for generations. First published as short stories in magazines in 1893 and 1894 and written during the years that Kipling lived in Vermont, the stories are most commonly seen as fables, using personified animal characters to teach moral lessons. The tales have also been interpreted as allegories commenting on the society, culture and politics of the times, and this interpretation is not difficult to find in Kipling's stories and verses. The best-known "Jungle Book" characters are Mowgli, the man-cub raised by wolves, and his friends and enemies, Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther, Kaa, an Indian python and Shere Khan, a tiger with a taste for man-cub and a long memory with which to hold a grudge. But also in these pages the reader will find fierce little Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the cobra-hunting mongoose, Toomai, the little boy who has seen, deep in the jungle, what no man has ever seen, and a host of supporting characters, both human and animal. Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was a prolific writer of short stories, poems, novels, travelogues and other commentary who is best known for his tales and poems about British soldiers in India and his children's stories. The first English-language recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1907, Kipling declined knighthood and appointment as Poet Laureate of Britain. Kipling's parents met and courted at Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire before moving to India, and when their son was born in Bombay they recalled the lake in giving him the middle name by which he would be known as a writer. In keeping with the custom of the times Kipling's parents sent him to a boarding house in England when he was five - it was a horrifying experience for the boy - and at the age of 16 he returned to India to a job as a writer at a British-run newspaper in Lahore, now in Pakistan, a job arranged by his schoolteacher father. Kipling would always think of himself as "Anglo-Indian", even though he lived most of his life elsewhere, including a very productive four years spent in Vermont. Kipling published his first collection of poetry, "Departmental Ditties," in 1886. Between November 1886 and June 1887 he published an incredible thirty-nine short stories, and in 1888 volumes containing a total of forty-one stories were published in book form. He continued to write throughout his life, at a frenetic pace that did not slow until after World War I, and his work remains popular today. Regarded as a major innovator in the development of the short story, many of his works have become enduring classics and have never been out of print. Kipling's Captains Courageous (ISBN-13: 978-1494945749; ISBN-10: 1494945746) is also available in a premium quality, unabridged large print edition from Summit Classic Press.

Book excerpt: It was seven o'clock of a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills when Father Wolf woke up from his day's rest, scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips. Mother Wolf lay with her big gray nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs, and the moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived. "Augrh!" said Father Wolf. "It is time to hunt again." He was going to spring down hill when a little shadow with a bushy tail crossed the threshold and whined: "Good luck go with you, O Chief of the Wolves. And good luck and strong white teeth go with noble children that they may never forget the hungry in this world."It was the jackal-Tabaqui, the Dish-licker-and the wolves of India despise Tabaqui because he runs about making mischief, and telling tales, and eating rags and pieces of leather from the village rubbish-heaps. But they are afraid of him too, because Tabaqui, more than anyone else in the jungle, is apt to go mad, and then he forgets that he was ever afraid of anyone, and runs through the forest biting everything in his way. Even the tiger runs and hides when little Tabaqui goes mad, for madness is the most disgraceful thing that can overtake a wild creature. We call it hydrophobia, but they call it dewanee-the madness-and run."Enter, then, and look," said Father Wolf stiffly, "but there is no food here.""For a wolf, no," said Tabaqui, "but for so mean a person as myself a dry bone is a good feast. Who are we, the Gidur-log [the jackal people], to pick and choose?" He scuttled to the back of the cave, where he found the bone of a buck with some meat on it, and sat cracking the end merrily."All thanks for this good meal," he said, licking his lips. "How beautiful are the noble children! How large are their eyes! And so young too! Indeed, indeed, I might have remembered that the children of kings are men from the beginning."Now, Tabaqui knew as well as anyone else that there is nothing so unlucky as to compliment children to their faces. It pleased him to see Mother and Father Wolf look uncomfortable.Tabaqui sat still, rejoicing in the mischief that he had made, and then he said spitefully:"Shere Khan, the Big One, has shifted his hunting grounds. He will hunt among these hills for the next moon, so he has told me."Shere Khan was the tiger who lived near the Waingunga River, twenty miles away."He has no right!" Father Wolf began angrily-"By the Law of the Jungle he has no right to change his quarters without due warning. He will frighten every head of game within ten miles, and I-I have to kill for two, these days.""His mother did not call him Lungri [the Lame One] for nothing," said Mother Wolf quietly. "He has been lame in one foot from his birth. That is why he has only killed cattle. Now the villagers of the Waingunga are angry with him, and he has come here to make our villagers angry. They will scour the jungle for him when he is far away, and we and our children must run when the grass is set alight. Indeed, we are very grateful to Shere Khan!""Shall I tell him of your gratitude?" said Tabaqui."Out!" snapped Father Wolf. "Out and hunt with thy master. Thou hast done harm enough for one night.""I go," said Tabaqui quietly. "Ye can hear Shere Khan below in the thickets. I might have saved myself the message."Father Wolf listened, and below in the valley that ran down to a little river he heard the dry, angry, snarly, singsong whine of a tiger who has caught nothing and does not care if all the jungle knows it."The fool!" said Father Wolf. "To begin a night's work with that noise! Does he think that our buck are like his fat Waingunga bullocks?""H'sh. It is neither bullock nor buck he hunts to-night," said Mother Wolf. "It is Man."The whine had changed to a sort of humming purr that seemed to come from every quarter of the compass.

Most of the characters are animals such as Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, though a principal character is the boy or "man-cub" Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by wolves. The stories are set in a forest in India; one place mentioned repeatedly is "Seonee" in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. A major theme in the book is abandonment followed by fostering, as in the life of Mowgli, echoing Kipling's own childhood.

Book excerpt: When the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Orellana set out on his search for cinnamon in 1541, he could not have anticipated that his travels would bring him to the bends of the world s longest river: the Amazon. Long a witness to evangelization campaigns, infrastructure development, and natural resource extraction, the river continues to arouse greed, competition, and fascination in its visitors. Following in the footsteps of past expeditions, The Jungle Book is a visual travel diary comprising discreetly staged scenes that reveal the diverse worlds of contemporary Amazonia and its surrounding areas. Photographer Yann Gross worked with different local communities in order to explore their lives in a time of ecological disintegration. Once immersed in their domestic world, the viewer soon forgets romantic cliches of forgotten lands and noble savages, and begins to question the guiding ideals of progress and development that inform escapist fantasies of the global south."

Book excerpt: The stream is shrunk--the pool is dry, And we be comrades, thou and I; With fevered jowl and dusty flank Each jostling each along the bank; And by one drouthy fear made still ,Forgoing thought of quest or kill. Now 'neath his dam the fawn may see, The lean Pack-wolf as cowed as he, And the tall buck, unflinching, note The fangs that tore his father's throat. The pools are shrunk--the streams are dry, And we be playmates, thou and I, Till yonder cloud--Good Hunting!--loose The rain that breaks our Water Truce. The Law of the Jungle--which is by far the oldest law in the world--has arranged for almost every kind of accident that may befall the Jungle People, till now its code is as perfect as time and custom can make it. You will remember that Mowgli spent a great part of his life in the Seeonee Wolf-Pack, learning the Law from Baloo, the Brown Bear; and it was Baloo who told him, when the boy grew impatient at the constant orders, that the Law was like the Giant Creeper, because it dropped across every one's back and no one could escape. "When thou hast lived as long as I have, Little Brother, thou wilt see how all the Jungle obeys at least one Law. And that will be no pleasant sight," said Baloo. This talk went in at one ear and out at the other, for a boy who spends his life eating and sleeping does not worry about anything till it actually stares him in the face. But, one year, Baloo's words came true, and Mowgli saw all the Jungle working under the Law.It began when the winter Rains failed almost entirely, and Ikki, the Porcupine, meeting Mowgli in a bamboo-thicket, told him that the wild yams were drying up. Now everybody knows that Ikki is ridiculously fastidious in his choice of food, and will eat nothing but the very best and ripest. So Mowgli laughed and said, "What is that to me?""Not much NOW," said Ikki, rattling his quills in a stiff, uncomfortable way, "but later we shall see. Is there any more diving into the deep rock-pool below the Bee-Rocks, Little Brother?""No. The foolish water is going all away, and I do not wish to break my head," said Mowgli, who, in those days, was quite sure that he knew as much as any five of the Jungle People put together."That is thy loss. A small crack might let in some wisdom." Ikki ducked quickly to prevent Mowgli from pulling his nose-bristles, and Mowgli told Baloo what Ikki had said. Baloo looked very grave, and mumbled half to himself: "If I were alone I would change my hunting-grounds now, before the others began to think. And yet--hunting among strangers ends in fighting; and they might hurt the Man-cub. We must wait and see how the mohwa blooms."That spring the mohwa tree, that Baloo was so fond of, never flowered. The greeny, cream-coloured, waxy blossoms were heat-killed before they were born, and only a few bad-smelling petals came down when he stood on his hind legs and shook the tree. Then, inch by inch, the untempered heat crept into the heart of the Jungle, turning it yellow, brown, and at last black. The green growths in the sides of the ravines burned up to broken wires and curled films of dead stuff; the hidden pools sank down and caked over, keeping the last least footmark on their edges as if it had been cast in iron; the juicy-stemmed creepers fell away from the trees they clung to and died at their feet; the bamboos withered, clanking when the hot winds blew, and the moss peeled off the rocks deep in the Jungle, till they were as bare and as hot as the quivering blue boulders in the bed of the stream.

Book excerpt: (Children's Classics) The adventures of Mowgli, an abandoned man-cub who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle and many other tales in this book use animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give lessons. The other stories in this Fantastica edition include Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, a heroic mongoose, and Toomai of the Elephants, the tale of a young elephant-handler. "This is the hour of pride and power, talon and tush and claw. Oh hear the call!-good hunting all that keep the Jungle Law!"" The Jungle Book contains seven short stories and seven poems. The first three stories are about Mowgli, while the remaining four each focus on different protagonists. On the night of a big hunt, Father Wolf and Mother Wolf discover a man's cub in the bushes, abandoned and naked. Mother Wolf immediately decides she will raise him as one of her own cubs, much to the tiger Shere Khan's dismay. Shere Khan believes the child was his to eat, and he is not happy to be turned away. Mother Wolf names the child Mowgli, which she says means frog. At the wolf Pack Council, Mowgli is accepted by the other wolves only after Baloo, a kind bear who teaches the cubs about the Jungle Law, and Bagheera, the black panther, vouch for him.
