Little attention was devoted to its possible physiological role until after the discovery of iodine as a normal constituent of the thyroid gland by Baumann in 1895. This classic investigation, followed by Drechsel's isolation of "Jodgorgosaure" from the horny axial skeleton of a Gorgonian coral, awakened a new interest in the study of the organic iodine compounds. Henze subsequently made a study of the substance described by Drechsel; he showed that it gives a xanthoprotein reaction and therefore is not iodaminobutyric acid as had been assumed by its discoverer. The identification of the iodgorgoic acid was completed by Wheeler and Jamieson, who established the fact that it is identical with 3.5-diiodtyrosine synthetically prepared by them. Aside from this no halogen-containing organic compound of known structure has yet been isolated from animal tissues. Numerous circumstances exist to encourage the study of the organic halogen derivatives associated with animal tissues. The physiological action of thyroid tissue has been related to its iodine-containing complex, numerous investigations bearing witness to the comparative inefficacy of non-iodine-containing residues.
