Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1918, Vol. 24 No attempt to review or abstract from the literature the facts relating to dedifferentiation in metazoa will be made. This has been done in an excellent summary and review by Schultz Schultz formulated the observations on metazoa in terms of the hypothesis that all phenomena of form regulation are somehow related to and a result of the reversal of differentiation or de differentiation. In other words regeneration is a result of the differentiation of dedifferentiated cells (see also Child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, Vol. 27: 1918-1919 While the sex ratios for the inbred litters of the eighth to the twenty-fifth generations varied considerably, the variation was much less after the twelfth generation than before (table A part of this variation was doubtless phenotypic, Since seasonal changes in temperature seem to alter the sex ratio in the rat (king and Stotsenburg, and probably also other agencies, such as the age of the mother (king, '16 a), have a similar effect. As all of the sex ratios were relatively high, however, the devia tions from the norm cannot be ascribed either to environment or to chance, so they must have been due, in part at least, to the manner in which the breeding animals were selected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1918, Vol. 24 Is there a direct transformation of one type of cell or differentiated part of a cell into another, and if so how is this transformation brought about? What is the nature of the physico-chemical changes which constitute structural regulation in the cell? The following facts derived from a careful study of over 3500 individuals of the ciliate protozoan Bursaria sp. are presented with the hope that they may help to throw light on these questions and possibly point out what is the general nature of the process which brings about dedifferentiation. II. The Normal Process Of Differentiation And Dedifferentiation 1. During cell division In any structurally differentiated cell which does not possess any plane of symmetry it is necessarily true that cell division would result in the formation of dissimilar parts unless some process took place through which the daughter cells became alike. The more striking cases of this kind occur among the more differentiated types of protozoa Wallengren ('01). But even in this group it is difficult to find examples where the process of structural regulation at division can he followed with any degree of ease. Bursaria, a heterotrichous ciliate of fairly common occurrence, is of sufficient size and complexity of organization to permit one to follow with relative clearness the change in structure which occurs during cell division, regeneration and certain othes processes. Figures 1 to 6 inclusive, of plate I, show ventral views of Bursaria in different stages of division. The closure of the gullet and peristome results in a complete disappearance of the membranelles lining the dorsal wall of the gullet (figs. 2 and 3, m), and other structures such as the ciliated ridge or septum (fig. 1, s). Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, Vol. 1: The Journal of Experimental Zoology, Baltimore The egg of Dentalium, like that of Cerebratulus, possesses certain features by means of which the axis may be determined in the living egg from the moment of its release from the ovary. The egg is more or less deeply pigmented, perfectly opaque, and of a color that varies in diflerent individuals from light olivaceous to reddish brown or almost brick red. When first set free the egg is somewhat irregular, but quickly becomes more rounded. It is then seen to be very considerably flattened, so as often to be almost biscuit-shaped, one side being always more flattened than the other, and often more or less irregular in contour. Viewed by reflected light the central region of each of the flat tened sides is seen to be occupied by a very distinct, though vaguely bounded, white area, nearly or quite free from pigment (fig. 1) these areas, as shown by the subsequent development, correspond with the two poles of the egg, and the more flattened side, which. This species will be described in a monograph on the Sponges of Beaufort, N. C., soon to be published by Dr. H. V. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1943, Vol. 25 This study has been carried a little further and included other birds with abnormal sex behavior, but normal structure. That is, to complete the more female end Of the series, we have studied several apparently normal hens that tread other hens. Of these, 1422 was sent from West Virginia by Professor Atwood as a pos sible hermaphrodite but has behaved normally 'in Maine. K134 and m4o8 were two such birds reared at the Station plant and finally killed to study their anatomy and histology. TO complete the more male end Of the series we have studied two guinea-chicken hybrids, one raised on the Maine poultry plant and the other sent in for examination from the country. Their gonads appeared to be testes, but their behavior was indifferent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1944, Vol. 26 The rapid development of the new science of genetics has opened up many fertile fields Of investigation and it has also re vived interest in the problem Of inbreeding Which has been dor mant for many years. Charles Darwin '7 8) considered the subject Of inbreeding so important that not only did he collect all available data regarding it, but he himself carried on a series of inbreeding experiments that extended over a period of eleven years. Darwin's experiments on plants were followed by those of Crampe of Huth and of Retzima - Bos '94) on various species of mammals. The conclusions reached by each Of these investigators can well be stated in the words Of Darwin The consequences of close interbreeding carried on for too long a time, are, as is generally believed, loss Of size, con stitutional vigor and fertility, sometimes accompanied by a tendency to malformation. Darwin adds, furthermore: That any evil directly follows from the closest interbreeding has been denied by many persons, but rarely by any practical breeder and never, as far as I know, by one who has largely bred ani mals which propagate their kind quickly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1936, Vol. 20 In a recent paper1 I reported an attempt to obtain a modified clone of Hydra Viridis by the continued selection of variates dif fering in the number of tentacles. In that experiment a clone was bred from a single wild polyp and two groups of its descend ants, each composed of 25 lines, were selected for variations in tentacle number in opposite directions from the mean of the clone. Selection was continued for several generations, then the number of tentacles of all buds produced by the last selected gen eration of the 50 lines was recorded and the averages of the two groups were compared. A slight difference, in the direction of selection, was found in the averages of the earlier buds of the two groups but this difference did not persist in the buds pro duced later by the same parents; regression was complete in a single generation.
