Book excerpt: Experimental design is important enough to merit a book on its own, without statistics, that instead links methodology to a discussion of how psychologists can advance and reject theories about human behaviour. The objective of this book is to fulfil this role. The first four chapters lay the foundations of design in experimental psychology. The first chapter justifies the prominent role given to methodology within the discipline, whilst chapters two and three describe between-subject and within-subject designs. Chapter four compares and contrasts the traditional experimental approach with that of the quasi-experimental, or correlational approach, concluding that the consequences of not recognizing the value of the latter approach can be far-reaching. The following three chapters discuss practical issues involved in running experiments. The first of these offers a comprehensive guide to the student researcher who wants to construct a good questionnaire, including a discussion of reliability and validity issues. The next chapter considers the basic tools of psychological research, whilst both discussing the theoretical problem of how a sample from a population is chosen and offering useful hints on the practical issue of finding adequate populations from which to select participants. The next chapter considers ethical practice within psychological research, written in large part so that psychology students will be better able to anticipate ethical problems in their studies before they occur. The final two chapters consider reporting and reading psychological papers. Chapter eight details what should and should not be included in a laboratory report. The contributors use their collective experience of marking numerous lab reports to highlight common errors and provide solutions. Finally, chapter nine describes the various elements of a journal article, including tips on how to get the best out of your journal reading.

Book excerpt: This volume, originally published in 1979, sponsored by the Psychonomic Society (the North American association of research psychologists), commemorates the centennial of experimental psychology as a separate discipline – dated from the opening of Wilhelm Wundt’s laboratory at Leipzig in 1879. Each major research area is surveyed by distinguished experts, and the chapters treat historical background and progress, experimental findings and methods, critical theoretical issues, evaluations of the current state of the art, future prospects, and even practical and social relevance of the work. Writing in a lively style suitable for non-specialists, the authors provide a general introduction to the history of experimental psychology. Illustrated by many photographs of leading historical figures, this book blends history with methodology, findings with theory, and discussion of specific topics with integrated assessments of what has truly been accomplished in the first hundred years of experimental psychology.

Book excerpt: This book reassesses the seminal work of Wilhelm Wundt by discussing the history and philosophy of psychology. It traces the pioneering theorist’s intellectual development and the evolution of psychology throughout his career. The author draws on little-known sources to situate psychological concepts in Wundt’s philosophical thought and address common myths and misconceptions relating to Wundt’s ideas. The ideas presented in this book show why Wundt’s work remains relevant in this era of ongoing mind/brain debate and interest continues in the links between psychology and philosophy. Featured topics include: Theoretical and philosophical foundations of Wundt’s early work in scientific psychology. Wundt’s conception of scientific philosophy in relation to his theory of knowledge. The epistemological dimensions of Wundt’s final project in scientific psychology. Wundt and the Philosophical Foundations of Psychology is a valuable resource for researchers, professors, and graduate students in cognitive and related psychology and philosophy disciplines.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Psychology and Pedagogy: For Teachers, Normal Colleges, and Universities The present volume has found a wide sale in Germany, and the translator trusts it will be of help to students and teachers in Britain and America. It makes no claim to be a complete text-book or manual of experimental psychology. The author emphasises this in his preface. It merely deals with those methods of experimental psychology that are particularly adapted to educational purposes. The author himself has carried out many experiments, and these he takes as a foundation for his work. Many are not exact, and many are merely tentative, hut such work is of value to the beginner, for it shows him what he must expect in his own work, and the suggestions of the author as to where further experiments are required are invaluable. Most of these experiments were carried out in the Psychological Institute of the Leipsic Teachers' Association, an institute founded and supported by an association of elementary school teachers. This should prove a stimulus to British associations to follow on the same lines. Only by making education a science can teachers hope to raise the status of their profession. As regards terminology I have followed Judd and Titchener in their translations of terms of the Wundtian psychology.
