Book excerpt: Alexander Chesney, along with his parents and siblings, came from County Antrim, Ireland in 1772 with the Rev. William Martin and his five ship loads of Protestants. The Chesney family settled alongside kinsmen on the Pacolet River in the Up-Country of South Carolina. Chesney established a plantation and also became involved in freighting mountain produce and lumber to the coastal region of Carolina. He remained loyal to the British government in the American Revolution and was chosen by Maj. Patrick Ferguson, one of the two independent British commanders in the South, to be his adjutant in the American Volunteers. He was in the the defeat of Ferguson and his band of Loyalists in the battle of Kings Mountain. Next, at the battle of Cowpen, when Chesney faced his wife's Patriot father and brothers, the other British independent commander, Col. Banastre Tarleton, with regular British soldiers and militiamen met defeat at the hands of Daniel Morgan. Realizing that the British forces were destined to be driven from America, Chesney, while in poor health following his wife's death, returned to Ireland. There, he became an officer in the customs department and a militia officer. He recorded his experiences in two separate journals. In this book the two journals are united and edited. The result is a unique rendition of an eye witness account of the American Revolution in the South and the post war events in Ireland for many who returned to the land of their birth. Maps, illustrations, 247 pages (hard back); $29.95 plus $3.50 media mail, $4.00 priority mail.

Book excerpt: Wayland's sketches of Rockingham County natives and other persons who had become identified with the county or the City of Harrisonburg reflect a wide variety of occupations, achievements and interests inasmuch as they include farmers, businessmen, educators, preachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, jurists, statesmen, soldiers, writers, and so on. Part I, the larger of the two components of the volume, consists of extended biographical sketches, with accompanying portraits, of Wayland's contemporaries. The subjects' careers and civic interests are covered in some detail, as is each individual's date and place of birth--and sometimes death-- and the names and dates associated with the subject's marriages and children. Part II features shorter, un-illustrated essays of a few hundred Rockingham County luminaries of bygone years, any number of whose lines are extended back to the 1700s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This social history of post-Revolutionary South Carolina examines the successful reconciliation of Patriots and Loyalists. The American Revolution was a vicious civil war fought between families and neighbors. Nowhere was this truer than in South Carolina. Yet, after the Revolution, South Carolina’s victorious Patriots offered vanquished Loyalists a prompt and generous legal and social reintegration. From Revolution to Reunion investigates the way in which South Carolinians, Patriot and Loyalist, managed to reconcile their bitter differences and reunite to heal South Carolina and create a stable foundation for the new United States. Rebecca Brannon considers rituals and emotions, as well as historical memory, to produce a complex and nuanced interpretation of the reconciliation process in post-Revolutionary South Carolina, detailing how Loyalists and Patriots worked together to heal their society. She frames the process in a larger historical context by comparing South Carolina’s experience with that of other states. Brannon highlights how Loyalists apologized but also became vital contributors to the new experiment in self-government and liberty. In return, the state government reinstated almost all the Loyalists by 1784. South Carolinians succeeded in creating a generous and lasting reconciliation between former enemies, but in the process they downplayed the dangers of civil war—which may have made it easier for South Carolinians to choose that path a second time.

In the great struggle for independence, those who remained loyal to the British crown were persecuted with loss of employment, eviction from their homes, heavy taxation, confiscation of property and imprisonment. Loyalist Americans from all walks of life were branded as traitors and enemies of the people. By the end of the war, 80,000 had fled their homeland to face a dismal exile from which few would return, outcasts of a new republic based on democratic values of liberty, equality and justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of the American Revolution was one of violent and unpredictable social, economic, and political change, and the dislocations of the period were most severely felt in the South. Sylvia Frey contends that the military struggle there involved a triangle--two sets of white belligerents and approximately 400,000 slaves. She reveals the dialectical relationships between slave resistance and Britain's Southern Strategy and between slave resistance and the white independence movement among Southerners, and shows how how these relationships transformed religion, law, and the economy during the postwar years.
